Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Printers are normally terrible things to scrap out - hardly any value and lots of plastic! But what about a vintage 1991 HP LaserJet?

The LaserJet III and IIIp were some of the greatest printers of all time. I was an HP service Tech for 10 years and I routinely serviced these with page counts in the millions. There was a LaserJet III that one of my clients had that had over 6 MILLION pages total page count. I personally installed 24 maintenance kits over about 6-8 years (that particular printer which was set to a 250,000 page service interval.) which equates to over 6million pages ... It was still running strong when I left the business. The LJ 8100 was also great.... Multi Million page counts were common.

Wow, I bet modern printers would struggle to get thousands let alone millions! 😲🙄

Well Chris I very much appreciate this. I have fond memories of a printer like this servicing a computer lab at Uni. It worked tirelessly with the lab tech changing out the toner cartridge every day or so. I looked at a test page it had printed showing it had printed out hundreds of thousands of pages, This was as you'll recall shortly after the dot matrix printer era and the text was shockingly dark and clear and precise in comparison.

Black and white laser printers are some of the best value in printing. I bought one used for $40 or so 15 years ago and and have printed many thousands of pages, only changing toner 2 or 3 times for maybe $20 each time.

They certainly made them well Nas! Printers have really come a long way in a relatively short time. I had a dot matrix printer in my small engine shop back in the early 90s - used to love the sound they made! 😁

Great scrap out Chris. Yes I've rescued many printers over the years, and those older ones are better. 👍

It is so interesting to see the inside of stuff. You always say it is best to try to sell as a whole or as parts but something so heavy can't really go on ebay and you tried the shop so it is great that you can still monitize it as a demolition vid. Looks like this one was half and half - lots of plastic and steel. I love your approach to all things even if they are dusty or no longer useful.

Bit of a shame that, those old HPs were real workhorses and if I didn't live on the other side of the world I would have been interested myself, hook it up to a Raspberry Pi as a print server and you have something that is probably good for tens of thousands of pages. The new stuff doesn't hold a candle to the reliability of these!

True Jason, the older stuff was generally so much more reliable! I gave it at least six months, but it was time for it to go!

Hard to believe a printer could have almost 10$ of scrap inside. But if you pick one if those beasts up the weight might convince you.

  • @TheUltimateRecycler

They are substantially heavier than modern printers for sure Kayle! But if you take off $4 for the switches, it's only $6 worth of scrap - and that's AU$ too, so not that lucrative!

I'm seeing silver DVD players at the left of screen at the beginning, appears to be a JVC on top? Just a note, most JVC players are region free with DVD's I've found. Makes it easy to play all region discs if that' your thing. Might help sell it in the shop quicker.
