Why isn't NIGERIA as developed as SOUTH AFRICA?

South Africa is clearly more developed than Nigeria based on various important metrics. But why isn't Nigeria as developed? I discuss this in detail in this video.

Its simple Nigerians are not patriotic about Nigeria as South Africans are patriotic about their country. Nigeria has millionaires in Nigeria and in the Nigerian diaspora but none of them seem to be contributing to the development of Nigeria, beside popping bottles. If it were South Africans playing football in numbers in EPL/la liga trust me most of that money would be coming back to SA to build. The reason South Africa seems to be developed its simply because active citizens and patriotism. How many African leaders would have done what Mandela did by stepping down voluntarily as president of the country?? And how many countries in Africa change political power peacefully? If you want to know why Nigeria is less developed check its leadership. I can make you an example of Rwanda thats building a world class tourist country or Namibia thats building the best road network in Africa even better than SA its all about leadership

SA has 17 500 black millionaires and black South Africans have the highest collective wealth in Africa sitting at more than $400B and this is the reason why we have the largest black middle class, middle lower class, black upper class and black millionaires in Africa. The first millionaire and billionaire in Africa is a South African, we have been generating wealth from the time of apartheid. The only blacks wealthier than us are black Americans and Brazil which i am not sure about Brazil. The total wealth of black South Africans is more than the wealth of all countries in west Africa combined or the once in East Africa. The actual total wealth of SA is $661B from private citizens and $145B from state entities such as PIC and BEE. This wealth which is more than $800B is generated from listed assets and commodities in a form of investments that generate wealth mostly from JSE stock exchange which has market capital of more than $1.3 Trillion and the ownership of black SA hold %30 and whites holding %25. It is important to notice that the South African companies stretch far beyond the borders of JSE/SA or Africa as a whole, some of this companies are listed on other global stock exchanges and they own shares as well. Is also important to notice the 70% ownership of SA economy by foreign entities and individuals which illiterate people throw it around. If you remove the 70% of JSE black South Africans remains with more than $400B which is the highest concentration of any collective wealth in Africa followed by Egyptians with total wealth of $350B with a population of 110million then is Nigerians with $228B and a population of 220million. Back to the 70% ownership, 25% of JSE is owned by white South Africans and this figure makes them the wealthiest group in Africa when you consider wealth per capita. The remaining of 45% of JSE is owned by foreigners from all walks of life but majority are western entities followed by Asia The other wealthiest blacks after black South Africans will be blacks in Namibia, the have the richest blacks per Capita in Africa after us. The richest bank in Africa is standard bank which is largely owned by the bank of China and the government of SA is second largest share holders. The assets on standard bank are worth $170B and the second richest bank in Africa is still a South African bank again owned by government through the pension funds with total assets of $80billion. Keep in mind that, although bank of china owns largest shares on standards bank, SA entities still have the most collective shares because PIC and SA insurance companies owns the most collective shares. Naspers is the richest company in Africa owned by SA government and as for Nigerians they just claim to be rich, they can never break it down to what they talking about like i did because there is no wealth there but poverty

We SouthAfricans compare our country with similarly developing countries of the world which have similar level of infrastructural development and income class to us and those countries comparable to South Africa are sadly not in Africa. We compare ourselves with likes of Turkey, Mexico, Malaysia and Brazil Also can rest of continental Africans stop the envy towards a better developed South Africa ,by always trying to give credit for SA’s infrastructural advancement to white SAns…your jealousy is showing😂 SA has had a majority Black government for last 30years which has kept the country developing (even as the government has been bitterly disappointing). SA just has better governance and better institutions that implement checks and balances, than rest of Africa and that’s why it’s better developed than and functions better than rest . Closest African countries to SA’s development are Morocco and Namibia, Nigeria isn’t even close to where SA is…to get there they need to fix their country. You need to hold your Nigeria gov accountable or you’ll forever be skipping borders to get to SA, US, UK etc. Even the load shedding you’re talking about, it’s gone as we fix our power supply…we have one of the largest electricity generating power grids in the Southern Hemisphere (largest grid in Africa), it’s like 9 times that of Nigeria’s whilst SA’s population is almost 5 times smaller than Nigeria, so go figure. Our rural villages have electricity and running communal water…this didn’t exist 30years ago, yes our under performing Black majority government did that…over 90% electricity access in whole country and it will get to 100% in time

This country has majority Black middle class and yes they majority live in townships but you must have it all confused what a township is…its mostly developed urban residential areas with all amenities and formal housing…many of those houses and areas compare very well to former white suburbia (which btw is now also having large upper middle class Black families living in). Many of the municipal services and amenities you find in Black SA townships aren’t even available in fancy areas in some parts of this continent eg no SA township has open gutters and drainage like most of west Africa (looking you Ghana and Nigeria,)in some of even so-called good rich areas…that’s just poor infrastructure and planning on part of local governments in those countries. Black SAns are amongst the most well off people on this continent, whether your little envious heart likes it or not, fact is that SA has largest Black middle class on continent…let that sink in and SA doesn’t even have too 5 largest populations in Africa. So yes SA is above the rest, catch up! Edit: the fact that SA government can provide for its most indigent with social grants; is show of proper governance…that is what a working system does; leave no one behind as much as possible. I know it’s a foreign concept for you…what’s next you’ll admonish is for having free basic education and sponsoring the ooorest of students to study free at variety with NSFAS?! Lol what else you think you could try to shame us with, when you wish you could have the same? SA’s economy is definitely not doing great and has been sluggish for a while. that’s why we’ve voted differently this year and we are working on a government of national unity so we can lessen the ANC’s hold on government …but still our country functions way better than most of yours and that’s why you lot keep jumping borders to be here illegally

Great video with useful information! As a Nigerian who has lived in South Africa my fellow Nigerians always argue with me when I tell them that South Africa is way more developed than Nigeria. Nigeria's first problem is bad leadership and lack of patriotism. Nobody cares and they sabotage the country massively for personal gains. The only time nigerians are truly patriotic is when the super eagles are playing and even at that people aren't as enthusiastic as they used to be. South Africa also has a better human rights record (post apartheid) and accountability which is one of the key factors that hamper or aid development in any country. In Nigeria the president, governors etc can do as they please and there are no consequences due to the lack of accountability. In South Africa the president cannot do whatever he likes! Mbeki and Zuma did not finish their terms but in Nigeria that would never happen no matter what they did! A South African friend of mine who lives in Nigeria ( one of the few) once told me that Buhari wouldn't have lasted for more than 3 days in office in South Africa! We need to stop lying to ourselves that we are the giant of Africa. I get upset every time I hear Nigerians say that because it only encourages complacency!

Climate, if you think nigeria is hotter, Australia is much hotter than Nigeria, yet very developed, If you think, Nigeria location disadvantage Nigeria, what about Mauritius, that is in isolation, if you nigeria has more population, well the population should be an advantage to Nigeria. Government doesn’t print money and Share among its citizens, it relies on hard working citizens making money and paying taxes. That mean population is a major advantage to a country’s economic prosperity, something nigeria is blessed with. Natural resources; nigeria has far more natural resources than any country in Africa. Crude oil, natural gas reserves, water aquifer, (according UN, Nigeria has the largest amount of water bellow the ground but it’s citizens lack access to clean pipe borne water safe for drinking, ) almost all types of solid minerals, intellectuals, large water body for hydro dams, vast amount of energy reserves yet stable electricity is a challenge. Nigeria has all the advantages over South Africa from this short write up. So what is your point exactly. Oh the white men were in were South Africa but they were also in nigeria, they built Nigeria early infrastructure. Do you think it is what the white built in the airports, seaport, roads, electricity generating plant built by the whites in the 80s that make South Africa among the good places to visit or it is the stadiums and infrastructure built by whites in the 80s they used to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup? If 100 people have a wealth of $2 billion, then you have 10 people having a wealth of $1 billion, which group is richer? well if you didn't do economics you are going to say the group that has $2 billion. So in order to make a fair comparison that takes into account the population of this 2 countries we must look at GDP per capita. Nigeria's GDP per capita is far lower than that of South Africa. South Africa has free higher education, whereby the only thing you need is to pass your matric then the government will pay for the course you want to study, that is not the case in Nigeria, if you do not have money you are doomed, unless you are very smart and manage to get some funding to further your studies.

South Africa is richer and more development than Nigeria because the people who set up South Africa understand that government starts from the bottom and not the top while Nigerians think it starts from the top and the bottom should be ignored because it will take care of itself. Consequently the system carries people along much more effectively in South Africa while in Nigeria entire communities(millions of people) are simply ignored.

that's not true. That's not how allocation of GDP works.A country can have a large GDP but that GDP is just based on how much money the country generates, for example look at India they have a really massive GDP but the HDI is very low.Yes india has a large population and that might be one of the reasons as to why the money feeds less people than they'd want to but corruption can influence GDP per capita.South africa has things such as SASSA grants which many people in south africa live off because of unemployment and that grant is taken from tax payers which are also counted in GDP.According to studies less than 30% of Nigerians pay tax meaning if more nigerians paid tax the GDP would be significantly higher than what it is,and since tax is counted in GDP then less people will benefit from GDP per capita. In south africa there's also a similar problem with tax payers but the people who do pay tax at times account for 80-90% of tax which in south africa's GDP it can be 20-25% of it entirely which is a lot of money.

South Africa developed to that extent because of long time colonization, the Europeans came to stay on the land, so they invest part of the resources right on the land. That is not the case with Nigeria, the British came for trade in Nigeria and not to stay, so Nigerians are taking away as slave with our resources to develop another countries including Brazil, it sugar cane plantations. If it's still the colonials in charge of governments in South Africa by now, do you think the power shortage happening now would have been so? Nigerians artefacts stolen away are bringing in money to the Europeans in their museums. So don't compare the two, they experienced different challenges.

The British did not come to stay in SA thats why even today theres few of them in SA compared to the Dutch who happened to be the ones who were fighting with the British to own SA . SA was not built by the British they took minerals and left . It was built by the Dutch and black people. @@afrikanheritage99 Haven't South Africa repossessed their ancestry land today, was the development made by the invaders not visible in the land for all eyes to see? That is not the case with the colonized Nigeria, our able forefathers was taking away by force with our resources to develop their economy and their countries for centuries, by the time we got back our country from them the land was empty, no investment to develop the land like in South Africa. We started from the scratch. Suppose the same was done in South Africa do you think Pretoria Durban Johannesburg Cape town Bloemfontein etc will be what they are now in just 30 years of incompetence without the investment of the invaders in years they stayed in the land? The outcome of the invaders benefited the peoples of South Africa today, while the colonization of Nigeria brought us disaster and lost of resources and our forefathers as slavery to different parts of the world. So the Nigeria case with South Africa are two parallel lines that has nothing in common.

South Africa has been developing since the 16th century by the Dutch Boers, when they arrived Cape town, they were building the counry for themselves and excluded the blacks, that's why they are different from the other colonized African countries. What ended in 1990 was Apartheid cos South Africa was always qn independent country. Very important we understand this point unlike Nigeria that gained independence in 1960 after some years of colonialism where the British took the resources out of the country to Europe, and only developed certain areas of the country for themselves alone, then the illegal brutal military regimes took over in 1966 and began to mismanage Nigeria till 1999 when we returned to democracy.

Do your research. Well above 50 percent of black South Africans are living in poverty. South Africa has the highest unemployment rate in the whole wide world, and it is mostly because of the overwhelmingly unemployed black SA population. You can Google and see for yourselves. The wealth and good life in SA is for the wytes. But SA blak population are the poorest in Africa.

Ayi something is wrong with you and your research base, SA has just only 4 mil white people which 2 mil are poor. How come that SA is still among devoloping countries in the world? This include Turkey, Venezuela, Brazil etc, not just in Africa and many African countries are still not yet made it to the list... D'you think 2 mill whites would have enough to support 54 mill blacks, yet white people do not share?

If don't believe we are the only country being members of BRICS. To join BRICS you must have almost equal economy, development and resources with almost same idea. Being part of BRICS SA white men were not happy as the appeal most to Europeans, as this has different perceptions from theirs in terms of economy

You're talking crap, only 10% of the country had access to water, sanitation, better healthcare and access to opportunities before 1994(we had apartheid), now we are sitting on more than 80%, the 2nd largest black middle class in world with access to education, water, sanitation, we built housing for our people, gave them access to better healthcare, we have built roads, schools, hospitals, we have built the Gautrain, stadiums and developed many other areas, what has your country done since 1960 after gaining independence.
