Why Is This My Family? | Why Me? EP. 4 | Dr. Omar Suleiman's Ramadan Series on Qadar

Your family can be your greatest blessing or your greatest test. You may pray for a peaceful family, and for Allah to protect them, but sometimes the conflict comes from within. Depending on your upbringing, you can feel strength and confidence from your caretakers, or a strong internal critic from unfair parenting or expectations. But there is wisdom in the circumstance of your family, and the person it shaped you to become. What lessons can you learn (or unlearn) from your parents, your family, and their sacrifice?

As we venture into the space of producing higher quality media, we’ve worked hard to make sure that our compliance with our religious ethics is not sacrificed. While Yaqeen has always produced vocals for our Ramadan series, this series was unique in that it also included the story of a family in the background. Our talented production team worked with our scholars to ensure that all actors were in proper hijab, and that all gender interactions were only by Mahrams in real life. We’re grateful to the team for its wonderful effort, and grateful to the families that agreed to participate.

I don’t talk to my father ! I tried but he doesn’t! Last time he saw me I was 6 years old. I have tried to contact him so I went to social media and I saw the face of my father after years I was 21 y.o and he told me : I don’t need contact not with you not with your mother 😢 I can’t understand how a father can be so heartless… My father made the life of my mother hell he paid the lawyers and judges my mother can not travel to her country because of him (they will detain her immediately) Sometimes I ask god why me ? But I know he’s the best planner ! And please people don’t leave your children alone… they need a father and mother 😢

i reverted to Islam last 2022 & my parents doesn't know yet I'm a Muslim, but i intend to inform them soon this Ramadan, insha'Allah. I've always been afraid and worried how they'd react knowing they're devoted Catholics & really against the idea of having a muslim daughter. This episode made me embrace more the idea that i am born into this family for a reason that only Allah SWT knows about & that fact alone is what I also have to trust. And perhaps, just maybe.. my longingness for my parents to be also guided to Islam will be just one step closer, insha'Allah, the moment I tell them i reverted to Islam. May Allah SWT grant ease to reverts who are also going through the same thing; and May Allah SWT make us among those who witness Laylatul Qadr. Jazakallah khair for this, Dr. Omar Suleiman and to the team behind this Ramadan series ! 🤍

I hesitated to watch this one. My family is not Muslim, my father was abusive and has not spoken to me in years since I openly came out as Muslim. My mother loves me but it’s emotionally abusive. My heart was heavy to hear this, so I waited. Yesterday I was telling my children about one part of my childhood, not a particularly bad part but ugly and I’ve come to a place where I can laugh about it and use it as a lesson for my kids. At the end of the story, I finished with “and this is why I want all of you to stay far away from cigarettes” and my teenager tells me “that’s just proof you’re a better parent than your parents were” and in that one line I think my daughter healed some of my childhood trauma. Your reminder of Ibrahim growing up with a father so wretched that he tried to throw him into the fire, and Moses growing up under firoun, combined with my daughter’s words has me in tears still. All I’ve ever wanted was to be better for my children than my parents were for me, and in return for my children to become better than me.

I don't usually comment but i couldn't resist this time. I need to let out these words. I've been with Yaqeen Institute it's been 3 years and I've watched the previous 2 years of Ramadan series. But this series in this Ramadan is very different than the others. It's like everything I ever needed to know. Everything I've been looking for. It's way too personal subhanAllah. I live in a very toxic family environment. Even the energy here drains me and demotivates me so much. I've been struggling more and more for the past 2 years. But Recently I almost gave up and started lose all my hope. And now as I'm watching this series everything is making sense. Allah directly giving me signs Allahu akbar. I'm so grateful for this series 🤍

I can feel you. This video hits hard. I don't have the best family dynamic and it's a constant struggle to forget what my father made my family go through but trying to come closer to Allah has helped me in easing my heart and made me less resentful towards him. I just hope and pray that one day we forget all the unpleasant memories and forgive everyone who ever hurt us for the sake of Allah.

I appreciate this perspective. As a revert, I definitely have struggled with how to make sense of my dysfunctional and abusive childhood in the light of the fact that I am Muslim now. I do see it as something that strengthened me and that Allah brought me through but at the time it was awful and has cost me nearly 2 decades in therapy to even try to get some sense of it. I pray that whoever reads this has a blessed Ramadan, and may all of your good deeds be rewarded and all of your bad deeds be forgiven, Ameen.

The dua about my family is answered even though then it seem like it was impossible to happen but i kept repeting it regardless, so do not stop praying for your circumstances, inshallah i pray your's will be answered too

if it is of any comfort to you, I didn't come from a happy loving family. We were Pakistani Muslims and we were doing very well financially. My sister started hanging around the wrong crowd and started using drugs in middle school and high school, things went downhill as my mom never recovered from that shock and suffered severe PTSD. My father was responsible for a lot of corrupting of my sister. I was focused on my studies as I was much older. My younger brother's childhood was disrupted. my parents divorced. You will never believe the things we witnessed and the aggressive outbursts from my sister and father. It seems like it was out of a horror movie. @@melaniehassler2405

For the past few years, I have struggled with depression. In my mind, I remembered my father at his worst and almost blanked out any good from him. Alhamdulilah, I'm coming to terms with the childhood trauma and trying to forgive him. I have just realised that although we hold our parents to a high standard of accountability, they are still human and carry their own baggage through parenthood. I hope I can learn from his mistakes and be more mindful with my child.

Make them realize how bad of an effect theyve had. Thatll depend parent to parent. For some your words are enough, for some your rleatives or elders or someone they respect could convince them, and for some maybe a doctor or therapist or imam talking will help. There are a rare few who are completely unwilling then just fulfill your duties and keep your distance.

Allah asks us to be humble and that requires accepting that we are not in control of the outcome, your parents may or may not change during this life. What we do have control over is the words and actions that we project, they are what we will be accountable for. It is a long and hard process to accept that change may not come but to still go on trying your best.

Lost mother sept 2022. Wallahi "voice that follows you for a lifetime" hit like a bag of bricks. After she is gone her advice/sayings rings so loud in my head "Nothing worth getting in this life comes easy, there are no shortcuts" "Relax your tense shoulders, stand/sit up straight!" "Dry your hair/wear a cap when you go out you're gonna get a cold!" "You don't know what you missed out on growing up in America. Take your brother back to Pakistan with you after I'm gone if you have to." "When will you quit this video game? When I'm gone?" "You understimate Pakistani women." "Hurry up and get married before I'm gone Hamza." "You are grossed out when I'm washing the meat but you love eating it when it's cooked!" "Don't become a slave to your desires." "Say the 3 Kul before you go to bed, you'll fall asleep faster" "Why didn't you call me back? I've called you ten times!" So many times after a long conversation, astagfiruallah, I told her the most terrible thing: "Are you done?" Anyways, I can only make dua now. Salam laykum.

You may have no idea Shaikh Omar as to how many of those thousands who have faced parental abuse and are caught in an extremely soul wrenching battle between how to create a safe distance with abusive parents, and still not having the guilt of being a tyrant themselves abandoning their parents specially when they may be ailing or have attained old age are going to have a way of putting into perspective what happened with them and why it all happened and hence chart out the best way forward. Just this one episode and those words u said there can emancipate the pain and suffering of so many. May Allah bless you with peace .
