I learned to ride on mine. It's perfect especially for us who are vertically challenged, lol. Started in the dirt and then went to the road. If you drop it, it's a breeze to pick up. It's slower but I was able to do and go most of the things everyone else did off road. Every day I regret selling that bike!!

I have both the DR200 and a TW200. I'll admit that for pure joy of riding, I'm addicted to my TW200. Something about it's cross country ability that I just find amazing. But, there's a caveat to that. My DR200 is more comfortable, can go faster with the right gearing on pavement, can haul more on the rear rack, has a way better fuel tank, and has much better suspension. I purposely divide my time between the two, and if I'm going out for hours on end, the DR200 is hands down the better bike. The TW200's seat is slightly lower, which makes it even more stable feeling given the super low center of gravity, but the DR200 has more ground clearance. The other thing about my DR200; I dropped to a 13 tooth front sprocket. It killed my top end speed, but all my roads around here are 45mph or less. But talking about low speed crawl ability. It's crazy how low and slow I can go now and what I can climb. Almost impossible to stall it. Oh, and final advantage of the DR200. High front fender. Friggin' mud won't clog up as much.

Me and a buddy were talking the other day about how no kids are riding anymore. I'm 55 and at my high school there were 20-30 motorcycles out front on any given day. It was FREEDOM!!! I could get a license at 14 and I could go anywhere (except the interstate). This bike actually reminds me of the old enduro, street/trail bikes that we had when I was a kid. Thanks for putting this video together. I am getting my son one of these this week!

So glad to see this review on the DR200! I ride a 2006 Yamaha XT225 for all the same reasons. It's inexpensive, lightweight, and isn't tiring at all to ride. Would love to see more rides on the DR200 if you're up for it!

I had a 1988 SP200 30 years ago, then bought a 1995 DR650 and after that a 2000 KTM LC4-E 640 and kept it till last year. I'm almost 60 and it was getting to be a problem trying to kick my leg over the mile high seat on the KTM.. . . . So last year I went to the local Suzuki dealer and they had a brand new, never sold 2017 DR200. I really liked the low seat height of the SP200 back many years ago and the DR200 looked like the same bike only now it had electric start. The bike having sat in the showroom for 2-years they had it marked down to $2995, I thought I'll take it, I'll never see a new bike for that price again.. Anyway I think it's a great bike, comfortable, plenty of power off-road with capable suspension. It's a bullet proof bike.

20 some odd years? That baby just turned 34. Out of the Suzuki lineup, the 200 has the best offroad pegs, true dirtbike wheel size combo and is easy for riders of any height... it's because back when it was designed in 1986, the 200 was not a "compromise" dualsport- it was a premium machine back then. Although it's slow accelerating by today's standard, it still carries its speed well through the bends. It's moved back in the standings since '86, but it still carries 100% that oldschool early 4 cycle dirtbike DNA. Jet it and lose a little weight and it's quite the machine.

Love my DR200, so does my GF. In fact she won't let go of the key. It's a bit different from yours in that it has a kick and electric start, oil radiator, small front carrier that doubles as a headlamp guard and rear carrier rack. Honestly, I had meant even considered this bike due to a very bad experience owning a 91 Suzuki DR650S. It was a lemon that had an oil leak in the oil return to the case. Suzuki does make a decent product. For the 2 I’ve owned, the 91 DR & 76 RM125 broke regularly. More than one costly repair. However, I’ve heard many good things about this bike, and have experienced first hand the quality of the Bergman 650. My good friend Bob Davis owns one. Thanks for the video, & I may look into this bike now!!!

I just don't understand people calling this a 'beginner bike' (not having a go at you BTW, every review or video I see calls it this). Small capacity does not equate to beginner bike, beginner friendly perhaps. I've been riding for 15 years now, everything from 1300cc to 125cc and the DR200 is the only bike I've kept. For commuting, weekend trail riding and reliable low-cost transport it just can't be beat. Oh, and forget all of the carb, exhaust and airbox mods, if you really want to spend cash on it get the oil-cooler and kick-start mods from the Trojan (agricultural version of the DR200). I'm always amazed at how few (if any) people do this, adds even more reliability (greater oil volume) and a back-up system for starting should your battery go bad.

I am still struggling to decide whether to get the DR200 or the new Honda CRF125F big wheel. I probably will not need it to be street legal but it would be a nice plus. Do you think the DR200 is light enough to tackle some rough single track in the mountains of Colorado? I know the Honda CRF125 could do it just fine because it's incredibly lightweight. But it's not street legal! You have obviously ridden a DR200 for a while, in all sorts of terrain and on the road, so what do you think? I really like that new Honda, but man, it's hard to decide.

  • @GladiusJon

That is a tough decision. The CRF is going to be much better suited for gnarly. But the dr200 can do it. You would need better tires immediately, as the stockers are a joke for anything offroad. Both bikes are going to be as reliable as the sun. I dont know.. I would have a hard time choosing also. . Here is what I would ask my self. Am I 100% going to be riding on the road, if yes. Then sacrifice some offroad performance an get the DR200.

Sounds good for a beginner, how do u think for it would work for a last dirt bike for a 63 yr old rode all my life ,just want something lite and dependable for real casual dirt riding and small rides in the country roads, just to experience 2 wheel freedom .

There is no doubt it would fit the bill. I just wonder sense you have so much experience. If it would leave you wanting more. For the money, you can’t really beat it. But if suspension is important and money isn’t an issue, I might recommend looking at a wr250r.

It's so good offroad cause the seat height is so low, I know everyone is into that 39 inch seat height, 60 horsepower shit but seriously, I can fly through trails on my xr200 way faster compared to my 450 ktm, people need to realize that a short seat height is better than a taller height. I love my 450 for fast trails and fire roads but I'll take the 200 anyday for tighter stuff, that's why my next bike is likely going to be a beta, lower seat height, usable power

That's pretty much what I was thinking too. When you're riding a trail that is so tight you can seldom crack loose with all 15 horsepower and never for very long, what point is having another 45 horsepower, especially if the bike is less nimble. It's just way more fun to ride a slow bike fast than to ride a fast bike slow.

I always enjoy "giant killer" type ride videos. Obviously, the DR200 is going to give away a lot on the "tech" side... but as you are rediscovering, does not give up a THING on the fun side. First quarter of 2019, I began to think that I would like a bike that offered less (less weight, less seat height, less tech) than my go-to ride: '12 WR250R. I just didn't enjoy wrestling 300 top heavy pounds with a 36+" seat height (and I'm 6' 1"), complete with computer chip controlled EFI (which also means a fuel pump). On more technical riding, the WR works fine IF you want to ride aggressively. (However, it's GREAT for dual sporting forest roads/etc.) You really need to ride the WR like you're mad at it in order for it to perform out in the woods as designed. It my opinion, it's not that great of a bike for plonking and exploring for the aforementioned top heavy weight, tall seat height, as well as the need to ride it aggressively. So, I wanted something that was simpler (in tech), lower, and lighter, (and completely street legal) for plonking and exploring. I seriously looked at the DR200's. In the end, though, I went with an XT225 (less weight at 238 lbs, more oomph and an additional gear and for short highway jaunts.) I have been very pleased with my choice. It is SO easy to ride over technical stuff on the XT225, compared to the top heavy and TALL WR. As a side benefit, the XT225 caused the wife to want to ride again after several years hiatus. (She's put over 3,000 miles on the XT since Oct '19!) I say all that to say that I completely understand what you're saying about the high FF (Fun Factor) of a simpler bike! I agree with the other commenters: More videos on the DR200! I would seriously rethink taking it on an "extreme" type enduro, though. It's been done, but it can be very abusive to the bike. ( kzread.info/dash/bejne/a6ycz6lmeNSZpZM.html ) If I was in your place, I would seriously consider using your DR200 to produce a series of "How To" videos to help riders new to dual sport start ascending the growth curve. Best of luck whatever you decide!

I just watched that video in the link. If anything it shows what can be done on a DR200. I think the rider's lack of fitness was the main limiting point
