When I started learning guitar in the early 80s, my guitar teacher said, “you’re gonna have to learn stairway to heaven, because everyone on the face of the earth is going to ask you to play it.“ And for a good while after that, he was absolutely right. And then, suddenly everyone hated it.

I think it's the same effect as listening to a song you teally like over and over and over and over until you get nauseated by hearing it again. It's one of my favorite songs but people overplaying it is probably the actual reason of the ban.

I actually had a good friend growing up that ran a music store (80's) and the reason they didn't want people playing it was that EVERYONE would play it. He said "Working 60 hours a week and hearing it at least 50 times a day was just too much". He told me a story of one day when they finally had enough, his brother and himself decided to spend $15,000 to build a soundproof booth for people to try out instruments. No more playing out on the floor. Lol

Random story: When I was at a music shop, I joked to my dad who was next to an employee, “Imagine if I just started playing Stairway To Heaven.” *The employee immediately started playing it on the guitar.*

I think it comes from the courtesy of not ruining the song for guitar store owners. Imagine having to hear it every day in day out being played by maybe not the best guitar players. Wouldn't be long before this beautiful song would be ruined. So i think the rule comes from an equal respect of the song and the store owners.

This is not the reason at all. It's cause the first few notes of the song can tell how good or bad the guitar is. Meaning if they play the notes and the guitar is bad the music store won't be able to sell their garbage guitars cause experienced people will pick up how bad the guitar is and not buy it

It still bugs me to this day that I was told “you can’t play that here” when I started playing Sweet Child Of Mine in a guitar store. When you’re a kid learning guitar that’s one of the first things you learn! I bought a guitar there because I knew what I wanted and was set on a specific guitar. I wished I’d walked out of that store and bought it elsewhere. This was in the mid-90s.

My college roommate, in 1973, played "Stairway" incessantly (it was current back then). The rest of our cohort eventually got so sick of it, they forbade him from playing it in their presence. The same was true of another of his favorites, "Puff the Magic Dragon." One night, after we all were quite inebriated, he pulled out his guitar and announced that he was going to sing for us a new song he had just written. The first few bars were clearly "Stairway to Heaven," but after the intro he sang (to that music) the lyrics to "Puff the Magic Dragon." As I recall, after we stopped laughing, we threw him in the swimming pool. "Stairway to Puff," as he dubbed it, remains one of my fondest memories of my early college years.

@@WoodsGhost I'm 76 now and all I can add is that I need to write a song that is like me as I go upstairs, "puffing up the stairway"!!! Fucking weak I admit!!! But I am in lockdown yet again.

I remember in The Rocks (Sydney, Australia), buskers played guitar to many songs. Two buskers played Stairway from start to finish, they dropped their guitars, sweat pouring down their faces, took some puffs from cigarettes and this guy comes along and asked if they could play Stairway to Heaven. The look from the two buskers had me in stitches.

I've been playing for 28 years. I've owned 30+ guitars and played hundreds more in music stores. I've never seen a "No Stairway to Heaven" sign. Not once. That being said, just because it's a good song doesn't mean that everyone who wanders into a music store can play it well. I imagine hearing people play it with middling skill at best could get old really fast.

My reply to the store owners and workers would be, “That’s why they call it work… deal with it.” Bahaha😂 I mean if they don’t like the lousy playing, show em the right way. I do recall learning the lead to STH by a guitar store owner back in 1980. That’s a cool musician.

I asked a Guy working in a major Store around my Place. And he was just like "Ok. Stay 3 hpours here, just follow me around, I give you a complete Tour and you can dig through all we have." I accepted. After one and a half hourr, I understood. One half butchered the Thing and the others play fine - but always, just always the shown Chords in loop. It makes you crazy. Same goes for "Smoke on the Water" and "Knocking on Heavens Door". One Day in a Store and you "love" it as everyone does love to hear "Last Christmas" over and over again.

Love it. Cant’ hear it enough. I particularly love playing the recorder and flute parts. Just as amazing as the guitar.

You never really see signs in Piano Showrooms that say "No Fur Elise."

In waynes world you dont hear any notes from the stairway intro. They did play it in the original take but it is dubbed over in the final edit. They did this because they did not get copyright licence to use the song in the movie as it would have cost too much. so ironically we get stairway denied

It ain't because of Wayne's World. They said "Stairway to Heaven",like "Crossroads Blues" have a cursed riff. So music shop would forbid you to play it. Guitar Center used to have that rule,they since went into Bankruptcy.

I went to the Music Store here and I asked "Why is Stairway to Heaven banned to play in Music or guitar stores" he said and I quote "Thats the first Im hearing of this, and we have been open for 50 years"

I have heard it played backwards years ago along with a couple of other songs...one by Madonna and they all gave worship to Satan. Creepy. The funny thing is that I used to play Stairway to Heaven in our band all the time. No burning deities or demons showed up so I guess it was okay. LOL. It seems like all the cool music has that crap packed in there somewhere.

So the actual joke comes from, an actual guitar store during the 80's, where people kept playing it over and over again the owner of the shop hung the sign and banned people from playing it because he was sick of it being butchered and also hearing it so many times all day long due to its popularity. That is where the joke from Wayne's World comes from. Now its just because of the movie.

The joke in Wayne's World is because they weren't allowed by the band to use the song in the film, so they were basically calling them out. The band never allowed their music to be used in films and there was a big thing around using Immigrant Song in School of Rock where Jack Black had to basically beg the band to let them use it

@@LordofNalicNod People don't realize it came basically from several situations, but they wanted to use the song and couldn't because of copyright came afterwards when they were already going to make a joke out of it, and even then they could still be sued for the first few notes and having a sign reference it......like I stated actual joke. People used to do this all the time, A music store near me banned Soul Coughing - St. Louise Is Listening because they are tired of hearing it over and over again from bassists.

I really like your music theory and how yougo about teaching it to others, so much that I subscribed to your Guitar Super System. I hope to get a lot out of youre courses.

The reason i always considered more “reasonable” is: If you have a display guitar (which you later intend to sell as new) and people are constantly playing the same notes on it, its going to cause wear patterns on the guitar. Frets and strings do wear with use, but if you play the same thing over and over, its goinn to show faster.

After listening to you, I've made my own theory about this: the song is so good that people resonate with it deeply. Therefore, any out-of-tune wannabe guitar player that butchers it while trying to impress the audience produces a great discomfort. Plus, since it's a great song it gets nauseating listening to it constantly and it diminishes its impact. Plus again, most players that would _insist_ to play it will either play it with their own spin or not be true at all to the original. Anyway, since it touches more deeply with the audience, people would prefer not to be 'touched' sort-of-speak. I guess it's like tickling. You like it but you'd rather that not anyone do it to you when _they_ please.

From what I can gather doing some research online, the main reason is because back in the 70s and 80s, it was one of, if not the, first songs that most beginner guitarists learned. Due to this, the song was played frequently in guitar stores (most of the time very poorly), which annoyed serious musicians who were regulars at the stores, who would in turn go to different stores, so the stores were losing business.

@@f8a1xhorizonz It's less about "losing business" and more about annoying the hell out of every other person in the store who has to hear the same shit played over and over again all day every day. In a music store close to where i live not only "stairway" was banned but all tunes from Metallica as well, as 99% of guitar players learn to play and shred with these songs. Imagine not only listening to the same 10 riffs (NOT SONGS) again and again but these riffs are also often played in the shittiest and least rhythmic versions you can imagine - this can absolutely destroy all the joy you once felt for that melody.

I just played this, on my cheapest Squier electric guitar, played clean through to a Peavey Classic 30, like in video. The neighbours called the police due to copyright infringement regulations, and maybe noise laws, but they got arrested.

I just came across this video and must admit that some of the comments and theories presented here are hysterical! Here's the real deal: I ran a pretty famous music store in Toronto throughout the late '70's, '80's and '90's called Steve's Music Store. It was a happening place where all ranks of musicians hung out and played. We encouraged anyone who wanted to try/play their choice guitar or amp to do so. On any given Saturday, a dozen or more "guitarists" would all be wanking ensemble, always out of tune. The noise level was sometimes intolerable, but it was fun and contributed to a unique vibe. There were several guitar - centric songs in vogue at the time, Strairway, Smoke on the water, Smells like teen spirit, etc. among them. One day, as a joke by/from the store staff, they created a hand written list called "the Top 10 songs you're not allowed to play", and posted it beside the cash register. #1 of course was Stairway to Heaven. It became a cultural joke; whenever someone was "caught" playing one of those songs, the staff were actually authorized to walk over to them and cut their cable!! On one of Mike Myers' regular visits to the store, the sign caught his eye. He asked how it came to be, and so we explained it. I/we didnt think much of it at the time, but the rest, as they say, is History!!

Hey I bought my first guitar at Steve's in Montreal! I've never come close to be good at guitar but in a similar vibe to the Saturday guitarists you are describing, I remember one night I was going to a show of a local band with a friend of mine and a few hours before the show, we went to a music store nearby (not Steve's that time) and grabed guitars and played some of the band's songs. I don't know how I got the courage to do this as I am an eternal shy introvert and I was quite bad at guitar but it's a damn good memory! Thanks for reminding me 😀!

Nice. I just watched your video, trying to play Stairway in that expo. And I wondered, why can't that be played. I was about to investigate, then saw this video. Nice one mate!!

It goes alon further back than Wayne's world those signs hung in guitar stores at least as early as the late 70s that I can remember , it hung in a famous store called millwheel guitars in Toronto, where Mike Myers is from

Imagine having to listen to to the same three songs every single day for the rest of your life. Imagine the amount of Stairway to Heaven, Smoke on the Water and Teen Spirit played in guitar stores. I'd ban them if i owned one, just not to have these songs ruined for me.

philipp seemann ...I know it’s their store. I just think that it’s the wrong business to get into if you don’t want to hear people playing the music that they are learning. It’s kind of like starting a swimming school, and then banning the dog-paddle for new swimmers, or an art teacher that bans any drawings that don’t resemble Picasso’s work. “I don’t care that your kid is at the bottom of the pool, I’m tired of that damned dog-paddle.”

No No.. what's even cooler is what used to happen to me My mate used to own a guitar store i would pick up a guitar and stay playing stairway..... Very quietly and he would be like No Man, it's ok, hehe and i'd turn it up and play it for like 1 hour after that it was , still got the blues for you After that.. Sad But True you get the idea although, even my mate said to me.... BUT...... AS LONG AS YOU CAN PLAY IT PROPERLY.

I was at a Guitar Center store last weekend, with my friend Dave. He ducked into the expensive guitar soundproof room to try out a Taylor. I walked in after a couple minutes and he was playing the intro to Stairway to Heaven. I said "Dude! No Stairway!" and we got the hell out of there...

The solo/outro really is the only part of the song I can listen to anymore (actually it's been that way for 30 years LOL). Btw, I have a lesson for the solo here, if interested :)

I don't know how to play the guitar but was in a music store and looking to invest in a guitar and learn to play. Someone showed me how to play a few tunes of Zeppelin, and i started playing that "forbidden riff" without knowing about it. He grabbed the guitar from me and told me to leave the store! I asked if there's a fire, or an earthquake, what's going on?! A month later i went back and he remembered me, and called the cops on me. 😒 A few months went by and i went back again; this time some ZZ TOP looking dudes were shopping for some guitars and they started playing that forbidden riff. The same almost happened to them but they were usual customers that personally knew the owner of the store, and spent alot of money there. I don't understand what the big deal is about that particular tune.

They were written during a period where psychedelics took off. Angels demons and aliens are common entities described in trips. Do some mush. You'll believe interesting things. They just put this in music as they likely were just rememberimg their roots during a trip ( 1/3 of the worlds major religion being christian) they would likely trip balls hear some melody in their head and refrence a entity. At Least thats a theory. I guess?

I have only ever been in one store which had a sign up. It said "No Stairway and No Smoke On The Water". So naturally I played both. The owner looked at me and said "It's ok at least you're not butchering them." Plus my son and I were the only two in the store at the time (it was small) 😁

On the one hand: I would totally get sick of hearing it if I worked in a music store, especially beginners who don’t play it all that well. On the other hand: Stairway is really great for trying out a guitar as it gives you a feel for the whole guitar, it’s fairly* easy so it’s great for new guitarists (plus, there’s something special about hearing a newbie playing Stairway, imo. Like a baby bird flying for the first time haha.)

it really depends. you have to realize that most guys just butcher the song and to destroy something so nice also resonates with me on a deep human level and it leads often to strong feelings of hate. :-) On the other side, however, if theres a guy like this dude here who jams it masterfully, I would probably applause (and ask him for lessons....)

I would imagine you hear it a lot at guitar shops. It's like Don't Stop Believing. It's overplayed. Its more a manner of ettiquite to not play Stairway than rule of law.

Instead of storming area 51, we should split in a group of 20 per guitar shop and play stairway at the same time

When it simplifies for a bit before it starts to swell going into THE solo is my favorite part. I don't know what it is about it. Maybe it just gives the listener the perfect amount of time to be emotionally invested in the intensity it is followed by after that little "duh nuh duh, duh nuh duh, duh nuh duh duh duh" reset.
