Title: Why is Sekiro so tough?
Description:
I'm BacklogBaldie and Welcome to my channel!
In this video I look into what separates Sekiro Shadows Die Twice, from its' Soulsborne cousins. Even veteran Dark Souls players and masters of Bloodborne struggled to get a handle on Sekiro, and the debate about mandatory easy modes in gaming really got heated over this one.
Here we will look at what makes Sekiro so different, and how you can learn to adapt to it. Once again, From Software have crafted something truly special, and mastering Sekiro is one of the most rewarding gaming experiences I have ever had.

    You can actually allow your posture to break in more than 50% of the games playthrough. It depends highly on your opponent. For example, the corrupted monk in Ashina Depth won't punish you after your posture breaks. Even if he was in mid combo, he would stop attacking. That fight was pretty much a practice session for the real corrupt monk. Which will punish you for breaking your posture by continuing the combo. Another example would be the Armored warrior. He swings so slow that you will recover from your posture being broken before he can land his next attack.

For me it was the guardian ape when I really hit my first huge roadblock. I run out of emblems for firecrackers which makes the first phase soo easier in the first 15 tries and just kept going without them until I beat him. I felt so good and it help me understand the combat so much better in this game. Because I was used to Ninja Gaiden and Devil May Cry series, the speed, dodging andnpartying felt more natural than the slow roll and blocking from Dark Souls. I had a harder time adjusting to the Dark Souls pace and parrying was a lot harder in Dark Souls.

    Here's the thing. Theres no leveling system or farming to the point where you could one shot the bosses like any other souls game. Sekiro is a game where you are already given the tools to succeed. Its all about studying your opponents fighting patterns and knowing when to strike, dodge, parry or counter. In this way, your skills in weilding the blade becomes better and sharper, that it almost feels like a dance when fighting these difficult bosses.

    Anyone that says Sekiro is easy probably doesn’t realize they played the game on easy mode. Playing without Kuros charm is the real game, you can’t spam the parry, you have to time every single parry or you will go down in a hit or 2, it’s not easy, but it’s also feels so fucking good when you master it.

  • @MNew2023
    @MNew20234 ай бұрын

    After many playthroughs I deflected as intended in this game, but I did beat the game at the beginning fully Souls style, by blocking, dodging and chipping away at bosses' health bars without any deflecting. It is tedious, but was still fun to me, because the combat then acquired a meditation like quality with a much slower pace. Owl Father was very tricky, though, as he obliterates your posture when you block him, so it was difficult to manage that.

    The problem is a lot of players used The level System In the dark souls franchise. To get stronger but you don't have the right to get stronger until you find all 3 pieces of the mask Then you can start using your levels to increase your fighting power. But you're fighting power is useless without the skill To use it.

  • @kingsgambit7098
    @kingsgambit70984 ай бұрын

    Years later and ppl still get it wrong. I will put it like this. "There is always the perfect tool for the job." The combat system is meant to be strategic, which 90% of gamers know nothing about. Yes, you can exploit blocking and parrying in sekiro just as much as dodging in darksouls, but that is not the heart of the games combat. I will give one example out of many.... In the fountainhead palace, you will come across the palace nobles. The blue carp will play a tune that stuns you. If you get deathblowed by them in this state, you start over at the last save even if you had multiple revives. It can be very frustrating to get through. However, if you use the item bite down in that stunned state, you will kill yourself. Avoiding the loss of your revives and allowing you to continue that playthrough.

    My moment was Genichiro. I was doing ok up until then, not great and dying a bit. I thought I was grasping the game but I wasn't. I died probably 55-60 times on Genichiro and actually quit. Eventually I started over and when I got to him the next time I was better and learned what to do. You have to play the game the way the game wants you to play. That's the brilliance of the combat. It's simple enough, but complex in its simple design enough to make it extremely difficult. Once I learned how to play I knew what I did wrong every time I died. This is one reason why it's the best FS game for me. There are some interesting design choices, and the camera isn't great at times, but it's the most fair game they have done to date. Some of the grab attacks are a bit odd, but usually easy enough to avoid. And Sword Saint Isshin is probably the best designed boss they have ever done. That fight tests everything you learned to that point and was well worth the 30 or 40 tries it took me to do it. When I finally beat him I had like 7 or 89 gourds left. I just stomped him so bad. Fantastic game.

    It’s not tough, it’s different. If you played several Soulsborne and soulslike games, you’re used to different mechanics, than the ones you need here. I see it all the time, that people heavily rely on dodging and after a little time off, I also fall into that trap. Do as the game tells you and you’ll get through.

    Sekiro was hard for me in some parts but overall I didn't find it to be crushingly difficult. The ability to jump, do stealth, and the fact that they removed the stamina bar made it WAY easier than a Souls game to me. I almost never used parry (just to beat the giraffe centipede thing the first time) and instead just ran around and avoided enemies and bosses attacks and chipped away at them when they were open. I was rather shocked when I saw videos of people easily destroying bosses using the parry mechanic.

    I rather thought Sekiro wasn't that bad. It especially helped that parry timings aren't "arbitrary 2 frame window in the enemy's swing" but "sword almost hit face, press button" which made parrying a lot easier. The only "souls" (or rather, Tenchu) game that I replayed enough times to get all the endings (and where getting all the achievements was not actually a soul-sucking grind for the most part).

    Another reason is that in sekiro you cant really grind if you get stuck. Sure you can grind for skill points and they will make fights slightly easier but they will never make a night and day difference, certainly never to trivialize boss fights as you could in soulsborne and specially in elden ring.

    That first General miniboss is perfect because of how wrecked he gets from simple spam. All his perilous attacks can be interrupted, many of his regular attacks can be interrupted, his posture-healing move can be interrupted, and basically any time you press a non-R1 button is a mistake. Of course there's a few moves in there that will hyperarmor through and get ya, usually denoted by two-handing, but the message is clear: don't wait. Don't look for openings. Just be a solid boxer, throwing out that jab.

But with little time to play and sometimes weeks between I'll have to wait with a retry when I'll reliably get some more time on my hands. Other games can be hard enough to remember mechanics and controls, but Sekiro is just ruthless

    It's not tough. It's simply tough to learn, but you get better and better until the game is easy because it becomes muscle memory. That's the beauty of it. You get out what you are willing to put in. I never bothered with parrying in the previous games so I was woefully unprepared for this. But I learnt, and mastered it - the same way anyone can.

    I'm not a souls veteran, only played bloodborn before it (and then ER). And I agree this game is actually a hellnof a game to learn. But once you understand how it works, it almost becomes easy. I remember beeing afraid to fight the owl cause everyone told me it was crazy hard and it was probably (for the younger form) the boss i killed almost perfectly after only few tries. Just the time to know all of his moves, and I was already skilled enough to punish him. And it's not the only boss I felt already knew how to do even in the first try. In the end i like the way the game almost gives you all you need to beat it at the very beginning unlike Elden ring where most of the time, people find a way to cheese the boss or try to beat it 50 lvl higher than what it takes and then say "this boss is so easyyyyy" but in the end it can be done without any skill.

    It’s either super easy to beat lady butterfly or super hard. I struggled super hard with her on one playthrough, even though I already beaten her before. Then I saw a playthrough on KZread with someone who beat her easily for the first time. The difference was just the amount of health upgrades collected. Not only do they increase your max health but also increased your defense. So while I had to heal every time I took damage, with enough upgrades it’s just a battle of attrition that is easy to win when every heal means you can take three times the hits than before. It’s the equivalent of having 500 or 1200 hp when fighting Margit in Elden Ring.

I've got some neurological issues, way to minor to have any dramatic name, but enough that Rhythm gameplay is not something I'm ever pulling off. The closest I've ever come to rage quitting was when I tried doing the base tutorial on Parrying and realized there wasn't an option to die or quit out and had to just fail again and again and again. Frustrating. I can see where some people would really enjoy it, for me the win was realizing when to stop wasting my time and replay Dark Souls.

    I think people think Sekiro is hard in the sense that you HAVE to become good at parrying to really beat the game. The game forces you to learn parry and doesn't really offer alternative ways to play the game and overcome bosses like Elden Ring. Sure there are some cheese methods out there, but there's no range options, there's no spells or incantations, and no summons or items to help progress the game if you are stuck. It's a fun game, but definitely more enjoyable for those that has the time to put into the game to learn the mechanics.

    it's hard because the bosses attacks are not scripted. Bosses sometimes do half a combo, or just the first hit of the combo. You never know what to expect. Also the bosses combos don't flow in the same way. Bosses will bait your attack into countering. Sometimes they let you do 3 hits, sometimes they counter you after the first. It's so random. Combine that with the speed and that the bosses abilities are not well telegraphed, and you got a 1 week being stuck at Genichiro. Also ffucking red symbol apears for 3 different things and fills up my screen, i don't know what's comming actually cause the red simbol distracts my attention from the boss.
