I am a Punjabi and I must say you have chosen a very interesting topic. The Punjabi music can be seen as soft power of Punjabi culture in Indian context. Daler Mehandi, Sukhbir were indeed the first ones to strike chord with non-Punjabi speaking audience. Punjabi speaking people’s favourite song is absolutely different from Non-Punjabis that’s a fact too. My all time favourite is Bulla ki Jaana main kaun of Rabbi Shergill

The major factor that made Punjabi music popular is that the industry provide individual artists that create their own albums. This thing pushes artistic creativity and also increases visibility. The same thing also works in western music where the song is know by the artist who created it, not by the movie it was part of or by the actor who acted in the video.

@@raja-jl9os yupp this was the golden era where we have variety of music from sufi to ghazal from qawali to south indian classics. This was the time when singers do experiment with music and created the gems out of it. For eg there is a song of kishore kumar ('aake seedhi lagi dil pr') where he also sang the female version of it and what a damn creation it was ❤️. We don't see these kinds of songs now.

Oh achcha isiliye aapne poocha tha Punjabi song suggestions! I have two playlists on my Spotify - Bengali soul and Punjabi vibe - they both represent two ends of spectrum - Bengali songs are extremely mellifluous, serene and melancholic while Punjabi ones are very spontaneous, electric and extroverted.

Popular Bengali Music sounds sort of like jpop(Japanese pop cuz both people stay low-key n don't flex) cuz of the abundance of emotion and using pianos and guitars a lot. Bengali composers of today like Jeet Ganguly, Pritam and Arko are known for making sad songs. While Punjabi music has a lot of new school RnB and hiphop influence(cuz both black n punjabi people flex). The punjabi music producers are known for club numbers, happy songs or wedding songs. Use of drum machines and electronic influences are common. The common likable bengali guy is someone with encyclopedic knowledge about football, 60s rock n roll and random quiz stuff, usually introverted with a pessimistic outlook and reads books. While the one in Punjabi is extroverted, goes for parties, is funny, probably loves cricket and is simpleminded and happy. Of course exceptions are there, but the diversity is what makes us the coolest country out there

I don’t know about india but I can explain the popularity of Punjabi music in North America. There are a lot of self pride in their music. Through music, they celebrate their brotherhood, statehood and culture. For example, GV’s Brick song. The whole song comprised of values and norms punjabis take pride in. On the other hand, most hindi music listeners suffer from inferiority complex. They don’t have any pride in Hindi. That’s why Punjabi music took over the Bollywood scene. When you suffer from inferiority, you tend to follow the outsiders who don’t have the problem with self confidence. 2nd, culturally they are very fearless. In the US, Indian and Pakistani punjabis learn driving in their early teenage. People from other parts of the india, Pakistan and Bangladeshi in the US mostly rely on public transportations. Punjabis have a lot of inner energy which they often can’t express though college degrees and good jobs. That’s why they highly rely on music to express their inner energy. 3rd, the Bhangra beats are highly addictive and very unique in South Asia. In India, musicians like Honey Singh, Badshah control the music scene. But the kids brought up outside india don’t relate to their music. So they often rely on Manni Sandu, Mickey Singh, Imran khan, Kamal raja and Fateh. They represent a different kind of attitude which is unique in North America, UK and Europe. They are way ahead of other non-Punjabi artists outside India. Underground Punjabi music videos budget in the Uk and US is so high that other don’t even dare to compete Finally, the Punjabi musicians have perfected the art of making fun of themselves. When you know how to laugh at yourself and not care what others think, you become unbeatable. In most of the music videos, you’ll find artists like Diljit, Badshah, Jstar wearing weird dresses and singing funny lyrics. In the age of social media, this quality is very attractive. Other cultures such as Bengali and South Indians haven’t really learned the art of making fun of themselves

Oye tu PhD kar Punjabi music scene te. It’s obviously your passion. I’m serious. I’ve been thinking along the same line as well and it’s good to have my thoughts confirmed. One more point I’ll add is the University level Bhangra competition scene in US, Canada etc. You can actually notice the differences between US and Canadian scene. Canada is much closer to folk.

If it has Hindi it's considered as old school and if it has glimpse of any other religion language then it's considered as like a folk song. I can see how much bollywood is contributing towards the unity of India. They only care about money.

One thing I like about punjabi music is respect to lyricists ( I know some lyricists still sturggle but it's better than other industries) lyricist like jaani, happy raikoti got so much fame that people not only inspired to be music producers or singer but lyricists too.... The way mentioning the name of lyricists (and their village name too some times they include friends name too) give them some Recognization....... Second the value and time they give to write and select lyrics.... Mainly after karan aujla vs sidhu moosewala controversy, I think lyricists too deserve love as an artist and punjabi industry is kinda better than others

1:27 what you mentioned as stage tradition is found all over India, in Maharashtra it's called Tamasha, UP- Nautanki, West Bengal-Jatra, Karnataka- Yakshagana. Also every region has their distinct music instruments. India has various regional forms of folk culture and theatres which even Indians don't knw because Bollywood never shows them and it's never taught in schools. This is a clear bias and ignorance of other cultures and their art forms.

Indian people like to dance & celebrate in our beautiful festivals, birthdays and marriages. I think other regional music doesn't fulfil that. So it's ok to be united by any kind of music rather than learning different cultures from different regions of India. I think govt could intervene in Bollywood, Tollywood etc to promote the Northeast region, Bihar, Ladakh etc. Better for everyone to be included in the growth of India as a society.

There are many internal factors which we can control to make audience listen to our music and attract more, like catchy music, maan meri jaan by king was catchy and good everyone listened to it also badshah's songs are good people listen to it but which are catchy, others are just there with less plays. Production point of yours is true but what audience needs and wants and what you want maintain a balance between them and it's done.

Punjabi producers, actors and other technicians are dominating Bollywood for the past three decades and imposing their culture and music on rest of India. The lyrics and music in the films of golden era were not influenced by punjabis and that's why they are immortal.

No one imposing Punjabi on you. The inclination towards Punjabi songs is natural. Don't listen to it as simple as that. Punjabi is also a part of Indian culture. So don't separate us by adding impose word.

I only like a few of the Punjabi songs, the more popular ones of 2016-17 era but nowadays every Punjabi is releasing an mv that noone asked for, like there are so many singers now that they seems like ordinary viewers to me. And that mucic is also the same with same storyline in their mvs like unrealistic beautiful girls who apparently ask their bfs money for everything, basically gold diggers and some unknown guy in some expensive as hell car. Seriously nowadays Punjabi songs are just a joke, old Punjabi songs were gold.

I think the biggest factor that makes Punjabi music industry the biggest in India is the lack of a big film industry. Film industries in Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, Kannada etc have become so big that they have monopolized music. Punjabi film industry, being very niche, hasn't been able to do it, thus allowing the Punjabi music industry to be independent. This enables and promotes indie artists/labels and music experimental culture. Punjabi music evolves into newer, popular genres way faster than the rest of Indian languages, that only follow its lead. Add to that the preference of art over business in the Punjabi culture and you have an endless pool of young talent cropping up!

Punjabi music and Sikhism that spirit is intertwined. Also, Birmingham Punjabi immigrants via Gudwara and keeping their roots in the UK. Using electronic keyboard, mixing technology and the explosion from the UK 🇬🇧 is what modern bhangra is . The Dhol plays louder in these communities who are purest of both Sikhism and Punjabi music then Punjab itself, the spirt the Indian government tried to crash after troubles of 80's it only made Punjabi pride bigger in the west and with social media it has hit a chord with Punjabi Youth in Punjab India. Hence the unity and victory off the farmers Protest.
