This Zakir Naik is such a stupid man, ask him about having sex slaves, that why is it allowed in Islam, he will give you the reason that in ancient time when "enemies" of Islam fought and there were prisoners of war, so muslim people had right to have sex with those females whom they conquered in war. What a logic. But anyway if he can give this logic to defend his so called religion of peace then atleast he should be sensible to understand that why Maharaja Dashrath and Shri Krishna had more than one wives. Shri Krishna married those women to save their life and dignity, the 16000 girls that Krishna married, was because they were hostages of a demon Naraksura for a long time and were freed by Krishna. My father married a girl less than half the age of my mother, for no fault of my mother. Why - just because he could not control his lust when this young girl started working at his office and because *it is permitted in Islam was my father's response.* My mother is devastated. All men want to enjoy another women other than their wife after 10 yrs of marriage because they got bored with the same thing no matte how beautiful, nice, intelligent, kind you are.

Which of the women we would consider to be the most important and Which one of them is actually our mother? I hope this makes sense.

I'm sorry, but just because there are more women doesn't mean they are worth less, and don't deserve their husband just as much as their husband deserves them. Also, just because other religions do the same doesn't mean it's right. It's almost like 'we are not the only bad guys, they are doing it too!' Not a very good argument in my opinion. Also, not all women want to get married. I'd say that makes up a large percentage, and could cover those 'extra women'. Not being married doesn't make you 'public property', in fact, it makes you your own property instead of being some man's property. You also forgot to mention all the lesbians and gays in America. In the country I live in, men are proportionately a lot more than women due to immigration. I don't see women having 4 husbands or even wanting more than one. It's only unfaithful scums that desire several wives. I would rather never have a romantic relationship and live the rest of my life alone than share my husband with someone else. I would divorce a husband for even wanting a second wife. Oh wait, I can't even file for divorce under this oppressive religion. My bad.

Let us point out what the Qur'anic verses on polygamy actually say: "If you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two or three, or four; but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them) then only one." (Al-Nisa', 4:3) A subsequent verse states: "You are never able to be fair and just between women even if that were your ardent desire." (Al-Nisa', 4:129) It is clear from this verse that: First, the Qur'an does not give men the blanket right to have more than one wife. Polygamy is not a right, but a responsibility to ensure social justice for orphans. What Allah has granted is in fact a restriction on an existing practice of that time when men could marry as many wives as they wanted. Second, because polygamy is not a right, Allah placed conditions on its practice. There is an overriding concern for justice in this short verse, and conditions are set to ensure that justice is done. Condition A: Polygyny is permitted within the context of war and orphans. It is permitted only if the men fear they would not be able to deal justly with the orphans. Condition B: The man who wants to be polygynous must have the capacity to be fair and just to all his wives. The verse is a call for just conduct towards women, not a right for men to fulfill their alleged lustful desires or their egos. And just treatment here means more than a man's financial capacity to support more than one wife: He must be fair in all ways, including in the time, support, and companionship he provides to his wives and children. Condition C: If the man fears he cannot deal justly with all his wives, then Allah advocates that he should marry only one as this will ensure equality. This is explicitly stated in the verse

Interesting. What I haven't heard is whether sex between sister wives is permissible. Because on a night wife #1 is too tired, wife #3 is busy with husband, wife #2 and #4 could be stoked for sex.

Not allowed in Islam. Allah/God designated men to marry more than one, not the other way around. Women are not capable of marrying or being in a relationship with multiple men. She is not capable mentally and emotionally to do it. Each gender has different psychological and emotional make ups. Truth is bitter to swallow, but it is still the truth.

If it's true that the purpose of polygamy is to protect women, wouldn't it make much more sense for women to marry multiple men instead?

no, because in islam the husband is expected to act as a provider for his wife. polygamy is allowed because in the prophet's time, many men died in war and so women were left widowed and their children left with no father. so therefore men were allowed to take on multiple wives in order to help them. keep in mind that in that time, women didn't work and their role in society was basically to get married and have children. polygamy is not useful in today's age because there is not shortage of men.

A woman can stay single for so many reasons and that is her own decision. We don't have any right to judge her. You don't need to be a single or married woman or man to comment on this issue but all you have to have is common sense. A woman may stay single for her career, higher education, or her family responsibilities. What will a person do if someone calls your sister, daughter or your friend public proberty? Will she still be public property if she says okay to be a second, third, or fourth wife?

I am a Muslim and often I hear Dr. Jakir's speech. But I am not satisfied with the answer this time .There were some mistakes in the explanation . Hopefully he can explain it in a proper way in his native language. Because English is not his mother language ,he used some wrong words ,which can easily offend anyone.

Mullahs disregard the 'if you fear' in the verse. YATAMA means orphans as well as unmarried, divorced or widowed women. 4:3 If you fear that you (the society) will not be able to do justice with the orphans, (as may happen in times of war and political turbulence, the government shall announce a state of Emergency), then, in order to accommodate widows and orphans, men of sound finances and character shall be encouraged to marry among these widows with mutual choice; two, three, and four. But, if you fear that you will not be able to deal justly, then, you must not take additional wives, and may continue with what you already have. This will be more suitable to prevent you from doing injustice and face financial hardship. [Second marriage during peace time is a frank violation of the Qur’an - note ‘If you fear’ in the beginning. 4:127-129]

Why does Islam permit polygamy? 1. Definition of Polygamy Polygamy means a system of marriage wherein one person has more than one spouse. Polygamy can be of two types; one is polygyny wherein a man marries more than one woman, and the other is polyandry, wherein a woman marries more than one man. Islam permits limited polygyny while prohibiting polyandry completely. 2. Legal Position of Polygyny in Islam Muslims derive the permissibility of polygyny in Islam from the Qur’anic verse: “If you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, two, or three, or four; but if you fear that you shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then (marry) only one…” [Al-Qur’an 4:3] From this verse, it is evident that polygyny is neither mandatory, nor encouraged, but merely permitted. The Qur’an also warns about the difficulty of dealing justly between multiple wives: Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire: But turn not away (from a woman) altogether, so as to leave her (as it were) hanging (in the air). If ye come to a friendly understanding, and practise self-restraint, Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful. [Al-Qur’an 4:129] Nevertheless, it made fair and equitable dealing with wives an obligation. If one is not sure of being able to deal justly with wives, the Qur’an says: “then (marry) only one” (Qur’an 4:3). The Qur’anic injunction, thus, made polygyny restrictive, when compared with the prevalent practice in the world. Dr. Jamal Badawi, a Canadian Islamic scholar says: “The requirement of justice rules out the fantasy that man can “own as many as he pleases.” It also rules out the concept of a “secondary wife”, for all wives have exactly the same status and are entitled to identical rights and claims over their husband. It also implies, according to the Islamic Law, that should the husband fail to provide enough support for any of his wives, she can go to court and ask for a divorce.” 3. Is Polygyny Exclusive to Islam? The question that arises is: “Did the institution of polygyny originate in Islam”? A brief look at major world religions and cultures clearly indicates that this is not the case. 1. Polygyny is permitted in Judaism. According to Talmudic law, Abraham had three wives, and Solomon had hundreds of wives. The practice of polygyny continued until Rabbi Gershom ben Yehudah (960 C.E to 1030 C.E) issued an edict against it. The Jewish Sephardic communities living in Muslim countries continued the practice until as late as 1950, when an Act of the Chief Rabbinate of Israel extended the ban on marrying more than one wife. 2. There is no passage in the New Testament that expressly prohibits polygamy except in the case of bishops and deacons. This was the understanding of the early Church Fathers and for several centuries in the Christian era.Westermarck, the noted authority on the history of human marriages states:“On various occasions Luther speaks of polygamy with considerable toleration. It had not been forbidden by God: even Abraham, who was a “perfect Christian”, had two wives. It is true that God had allowed such marriages to certain men of the Old Testament only in particular circumstances, and if a Christian wanted to follow their example he had to show that the circumstances were similar in his case; but polygamy was undoubtedly preferable to divorce.In 1650, soon after the Peace of Westphalia, when the population had been greatly reduced by the Thirty Years’ War, the Frankish Kreistag at Nuremberg passed resolution that thenceforth every man should be allowed to marry two women. Certain sects of Christians have even advocated polygamy with much fervor. In 1531 the Anabaptists openly preached at Munster that he who wants to be a true Christian must have several wives. And the Mormons, as the entire world knows, regard polygamy as a divine institution.” 3. Many Hindu religious personalities, according to their scriptures, had multiple wives. King Dashrat, the father of Rama, had more than one wife. Krishna had several wives. 4. Polygyny is a Solution Let us consider a few honest questions: What is the situation in countries that have banned polygamy? Do they really enjoy sincere and faithful “monogamy” as the norm? Are infidelity and secret extramarital sexual relationships more moral than the legitimate, legally protected husband-wife relationships, even under polygamy if there is a pressing need for it? Which of the two situations is better? There are societies where women outnumber men. Besides these, wars take a heavier toll on men as compared to women. For unmarried women who cannot find husbands and widows who aspire to a respectable family life, polygyny is often an acceptable alternative. 5. Conclusion The association of polygamy with Islam is a serious misunderstanding. Polygamy was practiced, often without limitations, in almost all cultures. In Islam, polygyny is not a substitute for monogamy, but merely a permission to practice limited polygyny, which is consistent with Islam’s realistic view of human nature, as well as social needs. I’m not a Islamic Scholar 👨🏻‍🏫, but I know the TANAKH has NO law against Polygyny. In the New Testament, there may seem to be laws against it but it is mistranslated from Greek and the New Testament isn’t a ground for new laws.

Hi, that is why its mention in Quran, you can only marry 2 wife 3 wife 4 wife if you can give the same level of love, peace, and expences. which is practically not posible for all men. Thick Cat the ratio of men to women. That ratio is fairly equal by nature if you don’t mess with it- there is a trend for slightly more boys at birth than girls. But women tend to live longer. My comment was stating the above answer was addressing issues of perceived “fairness” rather than the addressing the original question about the lack of women if all men married more than one.

Don't talk rubbish without having knowledge of Mahabharat first go and learn in what consequences it happened and what message it delivers. This Zakir Naik is such a stupid man, ask him about having sex slaves, that why is it allowed in Islam, he will give you the reason that in ancient time when "enemies" of Islam fought and there were prisoners of war, so muslim people had right to have sex with those females whom they conquered in war. If a woman could have multiple partners, she would stay pregnant during almost all her life, imagine if she has 3 husband, the all want 3 child, it makes 9 child (this is just an exemple). I know it can be LESS and it can be MORE. Also, a woman cannot stand being pregnat so much times, there will be so much risk to die at delivery....... And men are more tempted by violence than woman, it would be a perpetual war in a family where multiple men share ONE woman. Guys just think before commenting sh*t. Here’s the thing: monogamy produces much more healthy, stable families. It’s not my opinion. We have an abundance of empirical research on this. In cultures that permit men to take multiple wives, the intra-sexual competition that occurs causes greater levels of crime, violence, poverty than in societies that practice monogamous marriage.

Polygyny was allowed because early Muslim armies suffered great fatalities, so there were few men left. Marriage meant the remaining men provided for orphans, served as a father figure, and fulfilled the women's need for intimacy & protected them. All in a formal arrangement that provided them compensation in case of divorce. The verse in the Quran states these marriages can only occur if "you worry you may be unjust to orphans". Outside this condition, multiple marriages are discouraged :)

Zakir Naik says that a woman cannot marry more than one man because it will become difficult to identify who is the father of the child. Since when has giving birth to a child become a criteria for marriage??? People get married because they are in love with each other and not because they want to have a child. Birth of a child is a sign of their love for each other.

Just to note for people who are still confused, everything he said is true IN THEORY, in reality 99.9999% of men will and probably SHOULD marry one wife because you need to be able to provide exactly the same for all wives, that is the "justice" that is mentioned at the end of the verse.

I am an ex-muslim and I am not sexist or a feminist but this a serious question... do you honestly believe a man (yes any man) can be equal to all their wives?? Men cannot even multitask!!! Women are far better at multitasking, providing emotional support and attention so they would do a far better job with having 4 husbands than the other way round! And before you come at me... I don't want more than one man so don't come here and talk shit. Islam is only designed for men since muslim men can marry more than one wife without even their wife's permission or consent....

Har Baat me inka answer hota hai medically and scientifically accepted. Ye bhi bata dein ki kis medical lab me accept hua. Women issues par chillane lagte Hain.

Yeah you are right & a man cannot accept another man with his wife then how can he do the same & except his wife to support him in 2nd wife That is soo wrong

Than that man shouldnt marry for the second wife but if he wants to do so he will have to divorce the first wife. the relationship between wife and the husband stronger than anything in islam. Prophet Muhammad’s, pbup, favorite person was Aisha RA

@imarimas my arrow never miss ok but still it is wrong to me love is really Amazing when it is between 2 people a wife is seriously psycho if she accepts her husband to be with another woman but she needs to be only with him and be loyal to him that is really wrong

@@twicesaidiamaonce5003 The Quran only said it is fine to do so under certain conditions. It is okay to not want it and it is okay to do it too. Also this verse came in the time after a lot of men died in war. So imagine how many women were having problems because as you know, back then, most women depended on their men when it came to money and also helping with raising kids. It was the only fitting solution. If the men nowadays don't have these intentions, they have no right to want a second wife. It wasn't like today, where it is not really necessary to marry multiple times.

Women who knows their religion properly will understand that it's for greater goods. Moreover, for Muslims, we look this world as a place for test. It's not perfect that's why we believe in afterlife. Here in West we see sexual relationship before after marriage, and cheating so highly prevelant. People now even with consent of their partners shared and swap partners. Islam talks about more practical solution for it. Is it the perfect solution? Maybe not. What's your alternative solution?

Guess what, epics/religious books were scripted long time back. People have changed and so did their psychology, and apparantly old books don't comply modern world. Moreover it's a book.

The Holy Quran is a book for whole humanity, why it is the final and complete book? Because whatever is in the book is far more advance than the existing science. So if you agree or least assume, it is more advance, would you try to know more about The Book to be sure what is being talked about in it? Incase if you disagree, let's talk about Bible, same people with same perception like yours, came up with same methodology that the book is old and with current problems in society let's amend. What happened with time? N number of versions, hardly anyone believe in Christianity. Hope you got some idea now..
