Why is La Sagrada Familia Not Finished?

Ғылым және технология

La Sagrada Familia is an architectural marvel located in the heart of Barcelona, Spain. This basilica, designed by the legendary architect Antoni Gaudi, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the city's most recognizable landmarks. La Sagrada Familia construction began in 1882 and is still ongoing today. The basilica is known for its intricate and ornate details and is a fusion of Gothic and Art Nouveau styles.
La Sagrada Familia's most striking feature is its 18 towering spires, each representing one of Jesus' disciples. The spires are ornately carved and sculptured, and they rise high above the city, allowing visitors to see the basilica from almost anywhere in Barcelona. The basilica's interior is equally stunning, with colorful stained glass windows and intricate mosaics covering the walls and ceiling.
The use of natural light is one of the most fascinating aspects of La Sagrada Familia. The basilica was designed by Gaudi to be bathed in natural light, and the stained glass windows and skylights inside create a beautiful and serene atmosphere.
Finally, La Sagrada Familia is a truly remarkable architectural masterpiece that is a must-see for anyone visiting Barcelona.

When I was young, the construction was estimated to take 300 years, which is consistent with the great cathedrals of the past. It is amazing how much computer guided stone cutting has sped the process up and it will be finished in my lifetime. A finish in 2026 after starting in 1882 is actually a very fast construction rate, considering how intricate the artist expression of the building is.

There is also a huge political problem which might delay the construction: The two squares in front and one at the back were supposed to be parks, like the ones on the side, forming a green cross with the basilica in the center. The facade actually needs to take half of the block it has in front in order to build the stairs. The problem lies in that construction of residential buildings was allowed on those squares, with some legal clauses stating buildings should be demolished when the construction needed the space. Now the day is getting closer, and there are families living there, not only that, the landlords make a shitton of money renting the flats to tourists. So there's a heavy lobbying and press campaign to halt construction indefinetly. Greed maketh man.

I first saw La Sagrada in 1967 while in Spain for my honeymoon. I saw it again in March 0f 2022. Neither words nor video can adequately describe its astonishing appearance. It should be on everyones; (religious or not), bucket list. It should not however be described as a 'cathedral'. There is already a cathedral in Barcelona, a dark, grim, monstrosity and the contrast couldn't be greater. The Sagrada is light, colourful, and airy!

Well Gaudi had most plans made, but in 1936 the anarchists broke into the crypt and burned most of them. Construction stood still for a couple of years, then it picked up again in an effort to finish it for the Barcelona olympics, and from then on it took momentum. By the way. Reinforced concrete is a common construction technique or material of you want to call it so.

Why is Spain, a supposed secular country, spending so much time and money building this church? Is it worth the investment? What future profits may it bring?

Love from Iran and Iranians! 🥊🥊🥊🥊 However, it would be more accurate to say that Mr. Mark Burry is a New Zealand architect rather than stating he "graduated New Zealand". Mark Cameron Burry AO (born 24 February 1957) is a New Zealand architect. He serves as the Foundation Director of Swinburne University of Technology’s Smart Cities Research Institute. Nothing says "We believe Jesus is coming right back" like taking a couple hundred years to build a church.
