And John provides the perfect placeholder for us to step in and see ourselves with Jesus and to assume our identity as The Disciple Whom He Loves. I have that line printed and stuck to my mirror.

Jesus loved St John so much He, having no siblings to serve the place of, placed His mother Mary in St John's care and made her the mother of the Church in doing so. There is no doubt this was the greatest act of Jesus' love toward anyone during His ministry, not to be confused with His mission.

I like your answer. I think John just used that expression in writing about himself. I, myself, do not think he verbally walked around saying I am the disciple that Jesus loved.

“It was not enough for our God to promise us divinity in himself, unless he also took on our infirmity, as though to say, 'Do you want to know how much I love you, how certain you ought to be that I am going to give you my divine reality? I took to myself your mortal reality.'” ~St. Augustine

I believe it’s because John was there during the passion of Christ. By being there Jesus was able to entrust his mother to John not only as a son but also as a representative of the church. All the other apostles were too scared to witness … in essence the others didn’t believe in or love Christ enough to be there … they betrayed Jesus.

I believe he was there because he was beloved. In the same way, the women were also aware of His personal reciprocal love and were loyal.

maybe he was being anonymous to stay alive. The letters he was writing had so many things that were important for his time and the future and to remain anonymous was the only way to keep John safe until his old age to get all that God wanted to reveal to him out

I get all this. What im trying to figure out is how do we know John is the beloved one? Where does we make that connection in order to author the Gospel of John to him?

I take that as meaning John may have been the only one who articulated that Jesus loved him, as did Jesus love all the Apostles and Disciples and everyone. He knew Jesus loved him and he wasn't afraid to say it. It also helps us to understand that we too can say, with humility but assurance, we are the one that Jesus loves. I think sometimes people interpret John as being 'the one Jesus loved' because John was to take care of Our Blessed Mother? But not necessarily so.

The Johannine writings are among my favorite in Scripture. Perhaps we have some clarity in 1 John 4:19 "We love because he first loved us." (Some authorities say "We love him because he first loved us.") John goes on to write about showing our love for God by loving our brothers and sisters...in other words, knowing that God loves us empowers us to love both God and others. When John says that he is the disciple whom Jesus loved, he is remembering the awesome responsibility that is conferred on him when he learned that Jesus loves him.

Most Bible scholars believe that all 4 gospels were written anonymously. I have yet to hear one that said John wrote John.

Christ had more than 12 disciples. He had the main 12 selected for the ministry spreading the gospel but he had Nicodemus, Joseph of Arimithea, Matthias etc. I do not believe the disciple that Jesus loved is John but he imo referring to his dear friend Lazarus who was also a disciple of his. The confusion is at the cross when he says behold your mother, which would obviously be James but he was not at the cross because the disciples were in hiding and not at the cross. It was Lazarus who Christ called behold your mother because he took her to his home and took her in as his mother. Lazarus was the disciple who leaned on Christ's bosom at the last supper. It was not just the 12 at the last supper, there were others there too including his dear friend Lazarus. Furthermore Christ would not have shown such blatant favouritism of 1 of the 12 disciples over another but indeed he would refer to his dear friend Lazarus in this manner.

Are there biblical references you can supply to support that it was Lazarus? I’m just not seeing that. Thanks!

@@rnbham39 Okay let me show that it was Lazarus that Christ loved including leaning on him at the last supper. In book of John when Christ tells the disciples that one of them would betray him he didn't tell them who it was but he did tell the one whom leaning on his bosom whom he loved and him only. We know this because the other two accounts in Mark and Matthew they asked him one by one and he just says that it is one that dips his sop into the dish. It was only the one leaning on his bosom he whispered to. John 13:21 When Jesus had thus said, he was troubled in spirit, and testified, and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, that one of you shall betray me. 22Then the disciples looked one on another, doubting of whom he spake. 23Now there was leaning on Jesus' bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved. 24Simon Peter therefore beckoned to him, that he should ask who it should be of whom he spake. 25He then lying on Jesus' breast saith unto him, Lord, who is it? 26Jesus answered, He it is, to whom I shall give a sop, when I have dipped it. And when he had dipped the sop, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon. Mark 14:18 And as they sat and did eat, Jesus said, Verily I say unto you, One of you which eateth with me shall betray me. 19 And they began to be sorrowful, and to say unto him one by one, Is it I? and another said, Is it I? 20 And he answered and said unto them, It is one of the twelve, that dippeth with me in the dish. I Believe that Lazarus was from a Levitical priests bloodline and son of a Pharisee. In the Greek it says Lazarus was from Bethany beloved by Christ and also it says it comes from a Hebrew origin which is Eleazar . In the Hebrew it says Eleazar is a high priest son of Aaron. Usually the name Eleazar is used for names of priests. Also in the Greek of Lazarus it say "one that God helps" and in the Hebrew Eleazar it says "God has helped" John 11:1 Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. 3 Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. 5 Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. 11 These things said he: and after that he saith unto them, Our FRIEND Lazarus sleepeth; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. If it was me that Christ brought back from being dead four days, I would definitely be his best friend for life and follow him as his disciple. The next verses in John 11 shows that there were Jews at the house of Lazarus mourning with Mary and Martha his death. Then Martha secretly told Mary to go to the tomb to see Christ, probably because there were also Pharisees there as well. John 11:35 Jesus wept. 36 Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him! 38 Jesus therefore again groaning in himself cometh to the grave. It was a cave, and a stone lay upon it. Why would Jesus weep and groan if he didn't love Lazarus so deeply. He did not weep raising anyone else from death. Here is more of the mystery disciple. Peter had to follow this disciple to see where the tomb was because he was not there at the crucifixion. As a matter of fact none of the apostle's were at the trial or crucifixion. It was prophesied in the old testament that the apostles would be scattered. The reason the unnamed disciple got there first was he was the one there at the cross with Mary his mother and the other Mary. Lazarus would have been allowed to be there and also Christ said to Lazarus behold your mother figuratively so he would take care of her in his stead. Prophecy Zechariah 13:7 Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, and against the man that is my fellow, saith the LORD of hosts: smite the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.. Fulfilment Mark 14:43-50 49 I was daily with you in the temple teaching, and ye took me not: but the scriptures must be fulfilled. 50 And they all forsook him, and fled. John 16:31J esus answered them, Do ye now believe? 32 Behold, the hour cometh, yea, is now come, that ye shall be scattered, every man to his own, and shall leave me alone: and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with me. Therefore the disciple at the cross could not have been one of the apostle's because they went into hiding. John 19:26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son! 27 Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home. At Christ's trial Peter and the mystery disciple followed but they would not let in Peter only the mystery disciple who I believe is Lazarus. Why did the girl at the gate know Lazarus? Because of his family coming from a priestly line. John 18:15 And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple: that disciple was known unto the high priest, and went in with Jesus into the palace of the high priest. 16 But Peter stood at the door without. Then went out that other disciple, which was known unto the high priest, and spake unto her that kept the door, and brought in Peter. After Christ's death the same mystery disciple who was there at the cross would know where the tomb was which is who Peter is running following him to the sepulchre. John 20:3 Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre. 4So they ran both together: and the other disciple did outrun Peter, and came first to the sepulchre. 5And he stooping down, and looking in, saw the linen clothes lying; yet went he not in. 6Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, 7And the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. 8Then went in also that other disciple, which came first to the sepulchre, and he saw, and believed. 9For as yet they knew not the scripture, that he must rise again from the dead. The reason that the other disciple didn't go into the sepulchre right away was because he was from a high priest family and this would have been considered unclean to go into the sepulchre, which is why the other disciple waited when Peter said it was empty. The time when Christ showed himself at the sea of Tiberias they name the apostle's who were there and they mention two other disciple's but not their names. Why would John not mention their names. It's because they are not pertinent to the story. One of the two other disciple's was Lazarus in my opinion. John 21:1 After these things Jesus shewed himself again to the disciples at the sea of Tiberias; and on this wise shewed he himself. 2 There were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two OTHER of his disciples. 7 Therefore that disciple whom Jesus loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. Now when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his fisher's coat unto him, (for he was naked,) and did cast himself into the sea. 20 Then Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned on his breast at supper, and said, Lord, which is he that betrayeth thee? 21 Peter seeing him saith to Jesus, Lord, and what shall this man do? 22 Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me. 23 Then went this saying abroad among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, He shall not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? I am of the belief that when Peter said to the disciple that Jesus loved and leaned on his breast at the last supper, what shall this man do? Is probably because Peter was jealous of how much Christ loved Lazarus. So he tells Peter not to be concerned about this disciple just follow me. He then says that if he tarry till I come is referring to Lazarus's being raised from the dead. That is the saying went abroad that that disciple shall not die, because he was dead and yet lived. Hence the next verse where Christ gives clarity.
