Name Explain Greek here, came to help a little bit. First of all, nouns in Greek change according to their place in the syntax. The forms of Ellada are like this: Nominative(subject): Ελλάς/ Ελλάδα Ellas/ Ellatha Generative(in English, it's expressed with of... and other pronouns, as well as the possesive " 's" at the end of the word) Ελλάδος​/ Ελλάδας Dative(doesn't exist in modern Greek, but similar function as above): Ελλάδι Accusative(object): Ελλάδα Vocative(I don't know how to explain this, here's an example: Mike, come see this. The word "Mike" would be in vocative. It's when you talk to someone and you refer to him.) Ελλάδα/ Ελλάς. There is no plural, since it's the name of the country. Second of all, that apostrophe only exists in ancient greek and the "Καθαρεύουσα" (Katharevousa) We don't use that anymore. I hope this clarifies a few things.

PetrosB4 "Rum" historically means "Roman" in Turkish, referring to the Byzantine Empire and its remnants. "Yunan" is the correct word in Turkish if someone is referring to the Greeks.

In the Bible the Greeks are referred to as "Javan" -this refers to the Ionian Greeks of Asia Minor(now Turkey) which would have been the first Greeks that Middle eastern people came in contact with. In the same way the first group of Greeks the Italic peoples and Romans came into contact with were the Graeki -Graia a town on the island of Euboea that established colonies in southern Italy.

Greece is called "希腊" in Chinese which is translated from Hellas.

Arceus Legend Traditional and Simplified refer to writing, not speech. Simplified is mainly used in The People's Republic of China, and Traditional is mainly used in Taiwan. Calling the Chinese languages "dialects" is incredibly wrong, but the language is probably Mandarin - the main language. Fun fact: although the Chinese languages are so vastly different, they are all written with the same exact writing system (traditional or simplified), so a Wu speaker would probably have no chance conversing with a Cantonese speaker in person, but could understand them quite well if they wrote to one another. TL;DR: They're languages, not dialects - Traditional and Simplified refer to writing - The answer is probably Mandarin.

The name "希腊 (simplified)/希臘 (traditional)" is a common translation for all Chinese speakers in mainland China, Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. There is no difference between Chinese dialects in terms of this name.

From Ancient Macedonians and Ancient Cretans and Ancient Pontians all Greek called themselves Hellas ( they knew they were the same but wanted to be idependent something like USA but not united )

In ancient greek the word Ελλάς (hellas) is in the nominative case. But in ancient greek then genitive case of "Eλλάς" was "Ελλάδος" (Hellados) which means Greece's or "of Greece". In modern greek we tend to change the nominative to match better the other cases (Genitive, accusative and so on). It happened to many other words too, for example the word for crow used to be Nom : κόραξ Gen : κόρακος etc. and it now is Nom: κόρακας Gen: κόρακος. Many changes happened to the grammar but this is essentially the reason of Έλλάς vs Ελλάδα. The name hellas has become somewhat formal (some sort of high greek) but it is often used in sport chants because it has an epic ancient-like sound to it. And lastly in modern greek the "h" sound is also completely dropped for the word Ellada but not from the word Hellas. Hope I helped :)

Our sister-country Cyprus in every day language usually call us with a scorning name:("kalamarades",meaning "ink bearers", probably because during Ottoman occupation most of the scolars were greeks from Istanbul-Fanarion [Fener in turkish]).

The West call us Greeks (from the Graeci in Italy) the East Yunan ( from the Ionians of minor Asia) and we call ourselves Hellenes. Also both in Greece and Turkey from what I've known the term Romios and Rum is used respectively. Both mean Romans. Remnants of the Roman Empire or Romania, today called the Byzantine Empire. Multiple terms to define different though interlinked ethnic groups, not that extraordinary if one takes into account how far the Hellenic civilization as a whole has stretched geographically and chronically.

in turkey we call greece "Yunanistan" , Yunan coming from root ionia, -stan from persian for country. we also call greek people "yunan" (ionian) or "rum" (roman, from east romans the byzantines). also i am ethnically 100% turkish but my racial background has 22% greeko-italian (rum). most people in turkey have a significant amount of greek-ness in their background (mainly extemely assimilated through turkification by ruling turks several centuries ago) and thats why we look extremely mediterranean rather than central asian (where "turks" originate from).

In an nutshell: Greek nouns have different forms depending of how the noun is used, and to arrive at the one you want you use the process called declension: In demotic (AKA modern Greek) deriving from the nominative form Ελλάς (Greece) there is also the genitive form Ελλάδος (That which belong to Greece or that is of Greek origin), The accusative form Ελλάδα (which also means Greece, but this time we know it's also the object of the sentence), and finally the dative Ελλάδα (which happens to be the same as the accusative form, but in this instance is meant to be used for the purposes of calling or referring to Greece). What's weird about Greek is that these forms can then spur different other words depending on the meaning of each form, for example Ελλαδικό (Helladic, from the dative form) and Ελληνικό (Hellenic, from the nominative form). In this instance, Hellenic (Greek things) or Hellene (Greek person) is referring to the general idea meaning roughly the equivalent of the word "Germanic", which although includes Germans, isn't exclusively referring to a German citizen. To refer to a citizen of Greece and only that, the correct word is Helladite, and for Greek things, Helladic. However most Helladites would still prefer to use the term Hellene or Hellenic to identify themselves with, which is unlike Germans who don't go around calling themselves Germanics. So then, why is the Republic called Hellenic and not Helladic then? Habit really. The King of Greece was called King of the Hellenes, not just of the Helladites, implying that Greeks outside the realm and jurisdiction of Greece (for example, Greek Cypriots, who are Hellenes but not Helladites) should be loyal to him as well. When the monarchy was abolished, the Hellenic Kingdom became the Hellenic Republic, without much thought put into it the name, so it kinda stuck, and it isunhelpfully incorrect.

Thodor1s "dative Ελλάδα " is wrong; it 's "Ελλάδι". there are other mistakes, too: for instance ελλαδικο refers to the greek territory (thus deriving from hellas/hellados) while hellenic comes from "hellene"(word root of "hellene"(the hellenic people - ελλην, έλληνος), not "Hellas".

Ah, that was short but informative. I've lived in Greece for many years and I believe your pronunciation of "Ellada" is wrong. The "d" sound, known as "delta" in Greek, doesn't have the "th" sound as in English but the same tongue-between-the-teeth sound as "d" in Spanish.

Yes you're definitely correct. The d in "ellada" is voiced, and not unvoiced. It's pronounced the same as in the English word "that" and not as in the English word "think" (unvoiced th).

Rory Mason. here in greece we have a strange habbit , to relate ecerything with greece.Because many important things about coulture and science begun here in ancient greece and many greek words are spoken in english language, we say that everything is greek.So some people here say that some parts of scotland were habbited by greeks.Although these clams havent been historicaly proven, but they are really interesting .Because some citys in near the cost of scotland have names similar to greek words.Also the name scotland derives from the greek word scotos.Scotos in greek means darkness.As they say when greeks arived there, they saw a land with not much sunshine but cloudy , contrary to the sunny weather of greece so they name it land with a lot of darkness(scotland).the information you given about the ancient gaelic god is very interesting, afterall ancients greek were famous about their art and their coulture.here is a link with some info anton-dion.blogspot.gr/2014/04/scotland-land-of-ancient-greeks.html

Hellens are Greeks as u saw on the video, just Latin people called us Greeks but we call themselfs Hellens... so its the same thing with a diffeerent word, and if you go east on turkey or even china you will hear Greeks/Hellens be called Yunans or something like Yunan comming from the first people they met there in Anatolia the Iones. So Greeks/Hellens and Yunans are the same word to refer Hellenic people. Hope i helped you.

I know it's an old comment and I hope you're doing well. What does "Yavan" means? Jews and Greeks had a long history. Most of the times a bit sour though. lol Modern historians now say Philistines were probably Greeks and weren't the barbarians people the bible portraits them to be, but they were instead pretty sophisticated and had their cities prosperous until they were either gone extinct or assimilated. I believe that was up until the Babylonian conquest.

Thank you! Good explanation. I am Brazilian I am studying Greece's History and then I'll be starting to learn your language. In Portuguese, my native language, we call your country Grécia. It comes from Latin as well as Greece in English.

That was a very good video. As a Greek, I would like also to inform about the root of the word Yunan, which mean Greek in most of the eastern language (in turkish for example). The word Yunan derived from the greek tribe Ionians, who lived in Asia Minor for more than 3,000 years. So, these greek people, Ionians, were the first Greeks who came across with other races in the Middle East, and especialy with the Persians. Thats why, the Persians called Alexander the Great as the King yo͞oˈnän. So, all the eastern people call us Yunan, until today.

Shours Shor Maby from Ionian Greeks. In the Bible also Yavan (יוון) was one of Japhet's sons maby the same as Ionas in the Greek mythology. Ionas was the ancestor of Iones one of the four main Greek tribes (Achaeans, Dorians, Aiolians, Iones)

here in greece we call the country Ellada when we speak in our language (informal/semi-formal). when we speak in our language but formally we say Hellas. and when we speak in english (even here) we say greece.

Χρήστος Τσίκλης which is wrong actually, and derives from the affection of the other countries, meaning we use to call ourselves what they use to call us, when we speak their language. It's wrong tho, even in Hellenic or English, the correct way of the Hellens to call ourselves is "Hellens" not "Greeks".

Not really. If you speak English, you use the English name of a given country. If you're speaking Swedish, you'll use the Swedish name of your country, if you're speaking Greek, you'll use the Greek name for it... Wouldn't it be weird if I said: Είμαι απο το Magyarország or, Τώρα μένω σην Polska? :D Also, if you speak of Greece and Greeks as Hellas and Hellenes in English, it makes you sound like a pretentious twat.

You are correct on about Yunanistan and Iones. Rum comes from Romios which is the "New Roman" so the Byzantine. Today you use it for the Islamized Greeks from Pontos, where their language is called Pontiaka or Rumca. Don't believe people saying the music from Karadeniz is Turkish, it's Pontian/Greek music and it dates back to the 8th century, where there was no Ottoman empire in that region. And if you hear the Greek style Kemence you will see that it has a more sweet sound compared to the Turkish one.

You should mention that Greece also has a third name, which comes from the word "Ionia". Malay/indonesian name for greece is "Yunani" (literally means "ionian" or "people of ionia" while other derivation of the name also occurs in indian languages

It's called Niemcy, because it means "mute people" or "voiceless people". It was called that, because they were the only nation neighboring Poland with a non-slavic language. With Finnish "saksa", I guess it's called from Saxony.

And Ireland is called ''Pays des Galles'' in French :D. I t reflects the waning influence of the Celts in Western Europe as time goes on. When the Greeks named the territory of now modern France ''Gallia'' in BC times, it was Gaulish. By the time the French named Ireland (Airlann) ''Pays des Galles'' they were themselves already Frankish. By the way, Ptolemy called Ireland Mikra Brettania (Little Britain) in contrast to Megale Brettania (Great Britain).

In Polish you can actually use both the Greece\Greek form (Grecja\Grecy) and the 'Ellada form (Hellada/Hellenowie), but the latter is often used in context of ancient greek history and etc.

Unan= Ionia. Ionia was the Asia minor part of Greece. The same way the latins named Hellas "Graecia-Greece" because the first Hellenic people they met were the Graecoi, your indian ancestorts called us Unan because the first people they met were from Ionia.

In the Koini Dialect (common, "modern Greek") it's called Ελλάδα (Hellada) but it's still the same word as Ελλάς (Hellas) which is more archaic, and now used in more formal situations. But in the case of the Greek football team, it becomes Ελλάδος (Hellados) but i it's still from Ελλάς (Hellas) It's just that it is conjugated, so it becomes football team OF Hellados. I'm Greek :)

Your comment is misleading. The rough sound aspiration (δασεία) doesn't exist in modern Greek, so "Ελλάδα" is "Ellada" and not "Hellada".

Even more weird in Arab countries Greeks are called Yunnan which in english means Ionias again just like the latins first met Greacians and called all Greek speakers Greek the same happenend with arabs but from the other side (Asia Minor) the first Grrek speakers that they met where the Ionias and they call all the Greek speakers Ionians (Yunnan)....Also for some Asian countries Greek is translated to wise in the local languages....Greek is one of the oldest languages on the planet, and Greeks have presence in SE Meditarean for thousends of years and constant interaction with other speakers thats way the many different names....

Hellas is an archaic form of ancient greek up until the katharevousa form of greek. The root stem is Ellad- and in demotike it became Ellada. Nominative is Hellas, genetive is Hellados in ancient or katharevousa. Over time in the greek language the H, called rough aspirate, vanished so it begun to be pronounced Ellas (kind of like historia in italian became istoria) and also the nouns belonging to the third declination of the greek language, became closer to the root, therefore in nominative in the demotike is Ellada and genetive Elladas.

It would also interest you to know that until 100 years ago many greeks called themselves Rhomioi, ie Romans, because of Romania-Ρωμανια, the byzantine-eastern roman empire. Not to be confused with the modern country. During christian times, calling yourself greek meant you were a pagan clinging to the old gods, therefore christians called themselves romans since they were subjects of the eastern roman empire. This is why greek orthodox people in the middle east are called Rum Ortodoks, Roman orthodox :D very confusing I know and the greek minority in turkey are called Rum/Rumlar, while the Greeks from Greece are Yunan/Yunanlar (from the Ionian greeks who colonised Asia Minor first)

Clearly written comment indeed. From what I remember word Ἕλλην was used to describe pagans in the early bible. This is quite understandable if you look at the region the religion emerges from, because back then greeks were the predominant pagans in the area. The reason for people to begin to describe themselves romioi might stem from that. But also considering the time, roman heritage and therefore being roman was quite a thing. All the nation tried to tied themselves to the romans :D. Like Holy Roman Empire's case or even Mehmed II has titled himself caesar of rome after the conquest(or fall) of Constantinople. At the times Eastern Roman Empire was the sole Roman Empire for nearly a millenia so people maybe just voluntarily chose to call themselves romans. In modern Turkish, Yunan is primarily used when describing Greek people in Greece but seldomly people use rum too (primarily older people), Greek minorities are called Rum thats also correct and we use Rum to describe Greek Cypriots too.

Ehm I'm not Greek but I'm pretty sure 'Ellada' is simply the modern Greek variant of ancient Greek 'Hellas'. The initial h is still written but not pronounced anymore in modern Greek. The reason for this Hellenic football association is probably because they translated it from Greek into English and used Hellenic rather than Greek since it's closer to the original (same for the "Hellenic Republic"). The name of the Greek language in Greek itself is also ellinika. Also, the 'd' in 'ellada' is pronounced like the soft th in 'this' rather than 'think'.

trafo60 Yes that's true it is ʼΕλλάς in Koine Greek and it's was pronunced as modern Greek, the apostrophe means that there was a lost symphon in front of this ward. The lost symphon was (Η,η) (eta). In Koine Greek Η,η was pronunced as a long e but in classical Greek pronunciation H,η was pronunced as the English H, the sound of long e was the same letter with the sound of the short e the letter epsilon (Ε,ε). So in classical Greek it is Hελλας (Hellas) and in modern Greek Ελλάς (Εllas). PS In modern Greek H,η (eta) is pronunced as ita (i sound)

mkoo, you are correct, the middle east was exposed to the Ionians while Europe was exposed to the Greeks, so in most of the middle east the country is called Yuan or something in that style.

I am from Hellas and although we prefer Hellas over Greece we usually go along with Greece to avoid confusion

we mostly say Ellada/Ελλάδα and it's pronounced E-la-tha in the way that you said it without a h sound in the beginning, even when we say Hellas in Greek we say Ελλάς pronounced E-las, in fact we never have the h sound, but your confusion about which to use when comes down to how the Greek language works, every different way you can refer to something has a different but similar word so for example Greeks are E-li-nes/Έλληνες/Hellenes and they are from E-la-tha/Ελλάδα/Hellada and they speak E-li-ni-ka/Ελληνικά/Hellenic so your confusion stems from the Greek language and how it works, Ethniki Ellados means Greek National team and Hellenic Football Federation which in Greek would be called Ελληνική Ποδοσφαιρική Ομοσπονδία/E-li-ni-ki Po-tho-sfe-ri-ki O-mo-spon-thia so as you can see even the words in English like Hellenic in Greek don't have an h sound and stem from Ellada too, basically if you're talking about the country you can use either one, but most of us most of the time say Ellada

So nice of you to approach the name of Greece, just to let you know that in Greek language we have declinations on the nouns, therefore "Ethnici Ellados" has the word:Hellas in genitive which gives a meaning of belonging, so it literally means the Ethnici=National Ellados= of Greece/Hellas. Hellas and ellada is actually the same. Hellas is a more archaic word while Ellada, the modern word used to describe greece, comes from the conjunction of the word Hellas. The word Hellas is still used today and it's the official name of Greece abroad, but Greeks use the word Ellada. Finally as you mentioned, the apostrophe in Έ is a hidden H. So (H)ellas is written Έλλάς (Εllas) in Greek. Greek grammar is very complicated so the difference is not an easy explanation, but I hope I could help

Ελλάδα is the Greek (ελληνικό)name for Greece/Hellas. The Greeks (Έλληνες) prefer to be called Έλληνες and their (also mine) country as Ελλάδα. Hellas and Hellenic are just the name Ελλάς (which is the shorter and more formal version for the Ελλάδα) but in Latin letters. The Greeks needed to translate the name Ελλάς so people from other countries could understand it thus the Hellas name was created. Important fact: we "Greeks" we hate the name "Greece" and "Greek" because we believe that it describes a nation and a nationality that is not ours. But we just go with it because it is difficult to explain this really to everyone. So if you can call us either Έλληνες and our country Ελλάδα or Hellas and Hellenes. 😊

It is a literal translation. Ire is an archaic word which means wrath or fury. Éire comes from the goddess Ériú, who was literally the goddess of ire. Éir is cognate with ire, and also with the Spanish word ira, for comparison. Éire means “land of ire”. It's also worth noting that the terms Banbha and Fódhla were also used, as they were the sisters of Ériú in Old Gaelic mythology.

I'm Greek and I am a big fan, I'm also Australian. Ελλάδα is not written with the apostrophe because Greek has been simplified. We only use Τόνους which is the symbol above the "O".

Ελλάς = Ελ + λάς where ελ means light (helen of troy means lightfull) and λάς (las) means land. So it means the land of light or sun. Same way as Iceland, Scotland, Ireland etc.

Actually Greece's root is probably in Greek, later passing into Latin.

It is the tribe from Epirus that colonized Italian peninsula. They were called Greacians. Actually, Romans preserved many things that they Greeks used to call, even pronounciations which in Greek eventually developed and changed. The letter heta was pronounced as eh (long eh - longer eh that the letter e), and in the end of the word as ah. But in Greek it eventually started to be pronounced as "ee". So the word Κρητη in Greek is pronounced Kreetee in Greek because the pronunciation changed. But Romans had kept the cound and so Crete was pronounced Kreh-ta by them and then Crete by the french etc. and even in english it has -e instead of -ee because of the -eh sound of ancient Greek. But the most original was Kreh-ta.

Up till 1981 there was a formal modern Greek language and a colloquial modern Greek Ellas was the formal (the H was introduced because of an accent in Greek) and Ellada the colloquial name. Today they are used interchangeably.

We say Hellas to foreigners because by saying Ελλάδα , they wont understand much.

The exact origins of "Africa" are unknown, but the most common one I've seen is in reference to a tribe in northern Africa (either Berber or Punic) that lived around modern Libya and/or Tunisia called the Afer. *EDIT*: The Roman Empire eventually named one of their provinces in northern Africa "Africa" and just as with Asia the meaning of the term was extended to mean the continent as a whole. Asia seems to have been a name for the Anatolian Peninsula for sometime before the term began being expanded to mean anything east of Europe, with the peninsula eventually being renamed Asia Minor. "Asia" also has inexact origins with some saying it was in reference to the eastern banks of the Aegean Sea, or others saying it came from Semitic roots for rising as in "rasing sun".

In Greece today we do not use the apostrophe before the E in Ellada because the apostrophe which causes the h sound before belongs to a dialect of mostly written Greek called katharevousa which was discontinued in the 70’s.

Ellada (Ελλάδα) is a word that was created as many modern Greek words. In Greek verbs and objects have different suffixes when used in different ways like French, for example, have. In ancient Greek when someone wanted to refer to Greece said "Η Ελλάς (E Ellas)", when he wanted to say to Greece he said "εις την Ελλάδαν (ees teen Elladan, meaning --> to Greece)" and when he wanted to say of Greece he said "της Ελλάδος (tees Ellados)". It is the same today but with some words, including Hellas, when referred to, being reffered as in the second case (Ελλάδα, Ellada).

The names Γραικοί (Greeks) and Έλληνες (Hellenes), are somewhat two sides of the same coin. In ancient Greece, due to our polytheistic religion mythology and etymology of names could vary between people. The name Hellenes comes from king Helene, who is considered to be the father of all Hellenes (and who was a real person) and it means illuminated or "people of the sun". However, according tho other mythological sources, Greeks come first form Δευκαλίωνας (Deucalion) son of Prometheus and father of Hellene, who threw rocks behind him which turned to people. According to Apollodorus and the old chronicle of Paros, the name Greeks came first (after Deucalion) and it then became Hellenes (after his son)(«πρώτον μεν Γραικοί νυν δε Έλληνες», "At first they were Greeks and Then Hellenes"). The most precise assumption that we can make is that because of the different mythological versions between the Greek Tribes, our neighbors at the time either called us Greeks or Hellens, so both names are correct. The main reason that we call ourselves differently today is because of our whole history with the Ottoman Turks (who used the name Greeks and used to spread it through the seas.) Another reason is that Greeks were some of the first people to accept Christianity and at the time, the term Hellene was a synonym for pagan (believing in the Olympian Gods) and so it was left behind. And as if i hadn't said way too much already, Greeks during Roman empire era and later (after the turn to Christianity) where called Ρωμηοί (Romae) which comes from Romans but this is a whole other story. The way that Hellas and Ellada is used is like how people use The United States and America. The formal name is The United States of America, but most of non Spanish speaking countries call it America.

DZR3WIND. Uhm No. Americans don't refer to this country as "the States" as much as others might. Or at least not while we are here. It's usually just America (keep in mind the majority of Americans have never left). Perhaps when out of the country for those that go, you may hear us say, " back in the states or US". But not normally.

In modern Greek we don't pronounce the H as in English. So Hellas is also an English form of Ellas. Other than that everything else seems pretty accurate to me.

The character of Hellen, as my Classics prof claimed at any rate, was probably invented after the fact to fill in the geneological gaps in Greek myth. Hellen is named after Hellas and/or the Hellenes, not the other way around.

Hellas is the nominative case of older fashion, coming from ancient greek, Ellada is the modern word (the apostrophe that makes that "H" sound together with the sound itself at the beginning of words like that has been abandoned in modern pronunciation) and it's used in everyday conversation. Ethniki Ellados uses the genitive case of the older fashion "Hellas", in modern Greek the genitive case is "Elladas" but when we refer to national teams we usually use the older way. The cases in ancient and modern Greek for this noun go like this: Nom: Hellas Ellada Gen: Hellados Elladas Dat: Helladi - Acc: Helladan Ellada Voc: Hellas Ellada

That's ancient greek

That apostrophe before the Ε is called δασεία and was used in the polytonic system which was put out of use in 1981 in favor of the monotonic system. Pronunciation didn't change at all in 1981 but the symbols of the polytonic system used to mean something in ancient times. For example that apostrophe at the start of a word indicated an H sound so that's why all the words with this apostrophe are written with an H in English. example: hypothermia, Hellas, helion, Hermes. So Ελλάς (eng: Hellas, pronounced: Ell-AS) and Ελλάδα (eng: Hellas, pronounced Ell-A-tha) are the same thing actually but the first is an archaic type that can be used today as well. There are many words with a modern and an archaic type like Βασιλεύς (archaic) and Βασιλιάς (modern) that means king. Anyway, there are four types of names for Greece. Hellas-derived: used in Greek, Chinese, Norwegian Bokmål and Nynorsk. Graecia-derived: used in most languages. Ionia-derived: used in many eastern and middle eastern languages (Arabic, Armenian, Hebrew, Persian, Turkish) common example is Yunanistan. and then there is the Georgian language that doesn't use any of the categories above and has its own name Saberdzneti which was found in early modern Georgian historical sources and referred to the Greek area.

As Arabic speakers, we would call it Younan, In Hebrew, is it's called Yavan. Which is derived from Ionia.

Marie Ranney - dogs are the oldest domesticated animals and most people throughout history have had far more contact with dogs than with wolves. So virtually all languages evolved words for them. - when the chicken reached the ancestors of modern English speakers, none of them had a clue that it came from a jungle fowl. - the etymology of guinea pig is not clearly but it may be due to their shape and the squeaking sounds they make. Overall, when people encounter a new animal, they don't thoroughly analyze it and then give it a name that is taxonomically accurate. They come up with something that's clear and convenient and other people adopt it.

The difference between Ellas and Ellada comes from the declensions that greek has (same as latin). In ancient greek the nominative is Ellas and in genitive it switches to Ellados but in modern greek it became nominative Ellada genitiv Elladas. Other words have had that change happen, keeping their genitive consonant in all forms for modern greek, for example flame was flox - flogos and now is floga - flogas. Official documents tend to have archaic forms which is why you see the term Ellas instead of the modern Ellada when it comes to government documents and organisations. The term Hellenic Republic (exact translation being Hellenic Democracy) also exists in some forms as Elliniki Dimokratia.
