Why Is Gas So Expensive?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Sure, gasoline is less expensive today than it was a couple of years ago, but this video asks a different question.
Why is gasoline so much more expensive on one side of town than the other one? Paying 50 cents or more extra per gallon is a waste of hard earned cash. It takes money out of your pocket.
What do you do about it? Do you know where the least expensive service stations are in your town? Do you use an app?
Do you think gasoline is a monopoly? Would you buy another fuel for your car, truck, or SUV if it was available locally?
MPGomatic produces car review videos with a unique focus on gas mileage, in-cabin technology, and driveability. Yep, we're the folks that shoot those 0-60 MPH tests.

Some gas stations use low prices to try and draw you into the convenience store. It's like going to a grocery store that has milk cheaper than anywhere else in town. They hope you'll buy something else that's marked up to make up for the loss.

I think convenience is one of the biggest factors. A gas station located in a busy intersection but is still fairly easy to drive into will likely see more business than one where you have to do a U-turn or drive 5 miles to get to. Just like you could make your own hamburgers at home, and likely for much less, but people will still go to McDonalds/Wendys/Burger King because they don't have the time or patience to cook and prep the burger.

I loved your video on the Sparco R100 seats. curious how they are holding up, and what you think of them years down the road. Great Channel BTW!!

Thanks, Joel! The Sparco’s seat foam and fabric cover have not held up well. Last time I checked, there were no replacement covers or foam offered, but it’s been a while. They are what they are: inexpensive seats that look cool. I’d like to rebuild them with custom covers, at some point.

I look for certain areas where it is maybe 10 cents less and fill up there. Thank God I don't need no stinkin' premium in my car, the price difference is quite a bit, specially in a big truck or SUV

In the town where I used to live, the ARCO station always had the lowest prices and the Chevron station across the street charged about 20 cents a gallon more. I always filled up at the ARCO station, but the Chevron station often looked just as busy. I never understood it. Maybe it has to do with credit card acceptance and points programs?

I care - I fill up at Costco very often. They are without doubt the cheapest in our area. And we go there every week. I don't advocate driving out of the way to fill gas cheaper by 5 cents.

It's based on rack pricing, how much and what price they bought their gas, how much they have left in their tanks and how much gas is predicted to rise or fall and other variables too.

Around here, the better neighborhoods have the highest gas prices and also the ones near the highways. You see that a lot in the interstates, the stations right near the exit are way higher and many times, they "ran" out of regular, you are forced to buy premium.

MPGomatic I agree. Even I was surprised how much better it is than the F56 Hardtop I came from . Everything is stronger, better and faster. It's only superficially similar. The price tag is totally justified, in my opinion, and in versatility (space and comfort), it's in a completely different world.

Hmmm, have I ever stopped to wonder why gas is so expensive? No, not really. On a serious note though, I have noticed a big price difference between a couple of places. A "highway" services I sometimes stop by and use their charger while I grab something to eat, has their petrol, or gas, at £1.32.9 per litre. The supermarket that I use, less than a mile off this "highway", has theirs at £1.12.9 per litre. That's a vast, yawning chasm of a difference.

I try to understand why they price so high? Do they not want to be bothered with pumping gas unless they can make a huge profit on every gallon?

MPGomatic minimum pricing is generally regulated by the company. Even if a franchisee wanted to sell it cheaper as far as I know they cannot as part of their agreements. Basic market rigging and artificial inflation. They all do it.

MPGomatic they are subsidised by the parent company in most cases. This pricing type is typical for liberalized fuel markets. In countries with such markets the state intervention is limited to establishing terms and conditions that promote market transparency and free competition. Fuel retailers set their selling prices freely without major restrictions however fixing definitely takes place in order to keep the organisation profitable as a whole. It's not uncommon for a distributor to run at a subsidised loss in very remote areas just to have a face in the market. It's hard to explain and I don't understand all of it myself but there is a lot of info on this online. Hope if nothing else I could point you in the right direction.
