Why is Premium Gas So Expensive?

Next time you fill up your car at a gas station, pay attention to the price for premium gas versus the price for regular gas, and ask yourself "Am I slowly killing my car with cheap, watered down gasoline?" In today's video we're going to look at why different gasoline prices are so different between premium and regular, and who is coming up with these prices?

Please read your Owner’s Manual. This video isn’t 100% accurate: Some non-premium/non-sporty makes/models can require higher octane fuels. This is due to compression ratios being higher is some types of engines. Higher octane can prevent detonation in these engines. Detonation can easily be the death of your engine. I’ve worked in the automotive repair industry for two decades and have seen it for myself. What SHOULD have been said: If your vehicle doesn’t explicitly state that higher octane fuel is required, it isn’t necessary.

Mechanic here. There's a few factors that determine if your vehicle needs premium. 1) compression ratio. They touched on it in the video, but if your over 10:1 compression expect to run higher octane fuel. Unless 2) your vehicle has a knock sensor. Most modern cars do, and can adjust the engine in order to run on lower grade gasoline. It does so by adjusting 3) ignition timing. Depending on the engine, increasing ignition timing can cause spark knock, which the knock sensor can read, then remove ignition timing. And it's not just luxury and performance cars now either. Some small engines are running well over 11:1 compression now. Read your owners manual and happy motoring.

I do need to fill up with premium sir. I live in the EU and since November 2019 (officially only from January 2020) 95 octane standard gas is produced according to the E10 regulation instead of the previous E5. This means bio-ethanol increased from 5% to 10% in petrol. It wears off rubber parts and destroys injection systems. The fuel consumption increases with an average of 1.5-2 liters /100 kilometers, and the performance drops too, as the fuel contains less ignitable petrol. Old carbureted engines are the most endangered, as the ethanol ruins the membranes. I have a 1996 Mercedes w202 C 280. M104 2.8 inline 6 petrol engine with the Bosch HFM-SFI engine management system that also regulates injection. Though it's not on the list of endangered engines such as the predecessing generation of Mercedes motors (M103, M110, M116, M117 etc) that have Bosch K-Jetronic or KE-Jetronic systems, I still go ahead and fill it up with very expensive 100+ octane premium that's still E5 norm. On the longterm E10 will damage any engine. I want to keep mine in its current pristine shape for a long long time.

When they said “don’t ever use premium gasoline ever” that really depends on your car, most cars will tell you the minimum octane fuel on the inside of the fuel door. I drive a BMW and it requires 89 MINIMUM, I live in Arizona which offers this octane but most states don’t which is why I have to buy 91 when I leave the state. I know off the top of my head VW also requires 91. It really does affect the engine as when my sis borrowed my car and refilled with the wrong octane, my car ran VERY rough until I burned through it.

drg19841 is wrong tough. Diesel is dirtier.. thats all. It pollutes more so it gets taxed. Tough diesel here is cheaper than benzine(95 and up).. then again, monthly tax for diesel car is higher per month compared to benzine.

@@drg19841 diesel is cheaper here. our government wants to tax diesel higher but this will drive price of basic goods and public transportation up, and everyone's afraid of that. Americans and Europeans in our country can live like kings thanks to the economical imbalance brought by keeping basic goods and commute as low as possible. However, it's getting harder and harder for us to buy the latest tech as the prices keep increasing with inflation while our salaries remain the same

Tetra ethyl lead was added to fuel to allow the higher power ie higher compression ratio engines to run without fear of detonation. Everyone thinks that all anyone drove back in the day were muscle cars but the truth is most folks drove what we’d now call land yachts, big sedans and station wagons, all of which required massive engine with equal power to move their 5000 + lb girth around and at highway speeds. Once lead was removed from gasoline engine compression ratios dropped and power plummeted leading to the 1970’s era of giant 6 liter plus engines that made 100 horsepower. It wasn’t until the 1990’s when electronic controls had advanced far enough to allow an emissions compliant engine to produce power levels that hadn’t been seen since 1970. And those 90’s cars gave us the groundwork for the massively overpowered vehicles we have today ie the HellCat, SS Camaro, Mustang 5.0 etc...

Well in Aus petrol does have differences especially in low use smaller motors. 91 is shocking as the mix creates a wax like coating through the fuel system clogging up carby jets ect. Especially if it sits for a month or 2. 95 is what I use in the mower and other small motors. The motorbike even though not high performance does have a different feel and I use 98 in it. Saves pulling out the carby every couple months. Nearly all new released cars recommend 95 or up. But fleet car users are given fuel cards for 91 which is still suffient for those vehicles.

There is a catch and that's if your car uses forced induction or specified to need premium gas then you need to use what's recommended otherwise it could cause serious damage to your engine. Now as to premium not increasing hp and torque in regular cars is true unless they are tuned for such fuels.
