Early after Himmels death Frieren looks at what seems to be a Ring in her hand. Later Stark gifts Fern an armband that symbolizes love. Even later Frieren loses a ring Himmel had given her and upon finding it again Fern explains the motive on that ring is the same as on her bracelet symbolizing love. Frieren who at first seemed to not care now appears happy to have recovered the ring. We see that it is the same one she held shortly after Himmels death over thirty years ago. Frieren claims that Himmel didn't know it's meaning. In a flashback we see him gift the ring to her, alluding to the fact that he does know but also that he knows Frieren at that point does not feel similarly so he let's it be just a gift. Even later yet, Frieren and Ferns battle against the mimic ends with Ferns staff broken. Frieren deeply upsets Fern by suggesting to throw it away. While Fern is sulking with Stark, Frieren goes to have her staff restored even if she believed it was undoable. She has Richter restore it. When Richter calls the broken staff trash she breaks character and steps out of her usually apathetic demeanor. Correcting him that it isn't trash. She knows the staff was a gift of Heiter for Fern. All together these scenes make up at most an entire episode yet they have been split and divided across several. Together they tell a story of how Frieren slowly develops from someone who lacks understanding of humans. To someone who clearly does understand', even if it takes her a second to realize. It hardly is noticeable how all those story beats fit together and many more like this are hidden inside the episodes and pages of the manga. Examined directly this shows why Frierens Worldbuilding is so exceptional. Things don't just happen. They are built upon and used as foundation for things long in the past or far in the future.

Another aspect I found interesting was the legacy of the hero’s party vs reality. As you said they were essentially normal people in character but due to their deeds they have been turned into gods, devoid of humanity. I feel that’s telling us about our own reality, too often we see people as great messiahs when their character in reality is not too similar to ours.

Frieren is the kind of show that only old decrepit anime watchers like myself enjoy, so I'm honestly surprised that Frieren is massively popular in the never-ending age of shounen dominance. I, an old boomer fart (Gen X), still love the anime medium, because I don't stick to a single genre or demographic. If all you watch is nothing but Shonen Jump series, and think that all anime is the same, then frankly, you're not looking hard enough or you don't care about anime at all. I'm glad a series like Frieren is currently living rent free in everyone's minds. I hope that people start watching anime outside their comfort genre or demographic, whether they watch their backlog or watch a non-mainstream show currently airing. That might rekindle their love for anime. Yap yap yap, tldr: Anime IS NOT just shounen or isekai, challenge yourself dammit.

I don`t think the story although fresh and original is all that amazing, nor are the charakters- don´t get me wrong they are all written 10/10 but special, they are not (exept for Himmel of course who might already be one of the greatest anime charakter of all time) But again i feel the way the anime is directed is what is truely special, every episode is unbeliveably well choreographed and many are masterclasses.

Yeah, I kind of did a double take at that too. I guess I kinda get it, it has some of the same trappings that other shonens have, big cast of characters, fights, long running journey. At this point I kind of feel like the term "Shonen" has kind of become archaic because it doesn't really feel like there's anything explicitely JUST for boys nowadays. JJK is probably the most popular shonen right now and that series has a massive female fanbase.

In most cases, I can't like a series if I can't like the characters, no matter how amazing the action is. Frieren got the perfect balance between character development and the action. I like stories in which the protagonist is already a developed character and is the one guiding others to grow, like Lycoris Recoil for example, which is another anime I hold dear. It's established from the start that Frieren is at the end of a journey in which her and her party killed the Demon King and that she's already overpowered, yet we see her being goofy and enjoying mundane things more. On the other hand, we have Fern and Stark, both of them are young and have a lot to learn and Frieren is there to guide them in a way or another. Even when Fern has to take care of the gremlin that is her master is a way to help her grow. This is the kind of anime which does not have to rely on action scenes in every episode to keep its audience engaged. I'll sacrifice a battle shōnen to every god just to get another episode like the one in which Fern and Stark learned to dance. However, when it comes to the action scenes, they are clean and straight forward. No useless dialogue, not screaming the moves names, not having someone explain what's happening because the anime does an excellent job at showing instead of telling. I was expected another generic fantasy anime, but the first episode convinced me that it's not the case from the first minutes and I knew by the end of it that I'm going to enjoy this journey after it was clear what Frieren's goal is going to be.

The intro is very relatable! That is the realization I came up as well when watching anime now as an adult. Frieren is different, it is slow yet the journey is enjoyable. It makes me remind my younger self playing the best MMORPG Dragon Nest too. I like the character dynamics and not being too exaggerated with jokes. There is no need for me to discuss the animation, the fighting scenes are freaking awesome and fluid. Your character analysis of what makes a good and interesting character is top notch. I agree that in Frieren, characters feel more like human as they are being portrayed dying like a normal human and that is what captivates me as well.

@@Draconic_InceneratorHonestly, because the anime industry needs to slow down or it's gonna implode on itself. Studios are overworking animators trying to get out as much content as possible for as little pay as possible, and it's straight up hurting anime productions. The Sukuna vs. Mahoraga fight from JJK S2 was incomplete because of that shows absurdly tight schedule. The studio that did Zom 100 didn't even have time to finish the full opening sequence until 9 episodes into production because of issues with the shows development. Clear to whom? I work in Media (not anime) for >10 years. To incorporate many features quickly you need many people and production (management) gradually becoming more expensive and more difficult. For example you as a director together with 1 3d artist, 1 animator, 1 sound designer can finish one episode in a year, but it doesn’t mean you will finish the job 10x faster with 10x people. I doubt they can (amd want to) just throw more money into that so it’s better not to rush them…

The best thing about the frieren anime is that it perfected the base material and compensated its flaws. As much as i love the manga for its writing and characters, i always thought it was a bit lacking in terms of details on backgrounds, landscapes, towns... as well as overall battle visuals and staging. They even added some scenes that weren't in the original material (like the fern and stark dance). It felt like discovering frieren again even for someone who has read the manga and that's a sign of a very well made anime.

The most fascinating thing about battles in Frieren is how well the authors separate the fights that matter from the fights that don't. It is even more prominent in manga compared to anime. Sometimes you get 5 different fights against random monsters on one page. One panel each. They don't tell anything new about the characters, so there is no need to spend more on them. And then we have 24 chapters long (ch.81 to ch.104) battle with multiple skirmishes and exploration of motives and goals of all participants. Because that one contains important character development.

  • @Scyon13

The most important part the battles have is that is lacking in most Shonen if not all is the planning, Frieren goes into every conflict with a well thought through plan, I feel like most Shonen protags don't think things through or only have a rough idea of what's happening. I've said for years I wish instead constant power creep I wish there was a Shonen where the characters used strategy to beat their opponents, it's refreshing to see a mc that thinks first before acting.

I've never been able to finish a single anime these past 2 years. I thought, as a 25-year-old dude, I have finally grown out of it. Then an older relative of mine recommended Frieren. He said it is the top-rated anime on MAL at the moment, describing the plot as the story after a party of heroes defeated the demon lord. I was intrigued, thinking how could that be a good story? How did it get such a high rating? So, I tried it out, and it turns out, like what the thumbnail said, it is the perfect anime. It has everything: romance (Himmel's unconditional love), action (really good animation), and most of all, it's life-changing. The overall lesson: appreciating what you are now, what you have now. You learn something from every character. Personally, I love Eisen's quote: 'Being afraid isn't a bad thing. It's my fear that brought me this far,' basically just changed how I view fear entirely. Frieren is my GOAT anime fs. Also, this video is very well put. You deserve more subs, bro.

I think the best part about the series is actually the part where frieren developed the habit of enjoying dungeon exploration. It's somethign that she picked up from himmel and now that hes gone, the very fact she still does this just hits so much harder now that I reflect upon my life. I've lost some one in my life and they used to do all the time was go to a specific park in the neighborhood and just sit in the swings. I can't help but feel the need to do the same every now and again because of that sense of loss.

This show doesn’t strike me as outwardly impressive. It’s not as dramatic as Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and I would argue that the action scenes don’t really prompt the kind of amazing animation we find in FMAB either. I do think FMAB will eventually climb back on top. However, you don’t really realize how good Frieren is until you are a few episodes in. It is just… *nice* to watch. The slice-of-life episodes are just plain soothing. Taking in this show feels like accompanying Gandalf as he travels through Middle Earth, going hither and thither on errands and side quests while working on broader goals. Gandalf, after all, was humble in nature and known to work fairly subtle magic, casting small spells here and there when he needed something accomplished and only bringing out the big guns when things got _serious._ Frieren herself seems to walk through life doing much the same; the only difference is that she has to _learn_ to appreciate those around her, and that becomes the arc of the show. What I respect about the show’s treatment is that it is not afraid to show us the flaws of the companions she traveled with for a decade. She doesn’t romanticize her memory of them or possess the same distant idolization that the people in the show demonstrate towards the mythical figures. When she looks upon the statues they left in their wake going through one town after another, she remembers the actual _people_ she traveled with and the ways in which they did or did not live up to the hype (though so far the show broadly paints them as unquestionably “good” people). Himmel, for example, may have been a proper hero in the end, but he was incredibly vain and had a few other unsavory traits. It’s also a show that is not afraid to say goodbye to characters. When they introduce Sein, he stays on until he accomplishes his initial goal, splitting off to go on his own journey. And what was interesting was that I began to be attached to him as I would a full-time supporting character. All in all, it is a really satisfying show to watch.

Characters have these almost unseen quirks. Young Himmel flicks his hair a certain way when having fun with his friends. Frieren of course has plenty of these, including occasionally kicking her feet while reading and sleeping with a book over her face. And who can forget Heiter's hangover face, eyes half closed, mouth half open. It's attention to these little details that make the anime so memorable.

It talkes about topics that most anime and story telling dont even want to touch because it is difficult to do and succeed. My favourite example of the writing: Episode 2: Fern mentiones the spell that makes sweet grapes sour as one of the weird spells Frieren collects. We also see that Fern doesn't like sour grapes. Episode 3: We learn that Eisen's favourite food is sour grapes. Episode 4: We see Frieren use a spell on some grapes when they're with Eisen, and Eisen ate all his grapes while Fern is just looking at hers. In 3 episodes we learn so much about Frierens motivation for collecting weird spells, but none of the 3 short scenes are treated as important to the story. They just exist, and I love it. It's so simple.

I never enjoyed manga as a medium, but Sousou no Frieren is beyond worth it. Idk how to describe Frieren, is it melancholic? It never made me ugly cry like Violet Evergarden did, not even the first episode. But the emotion that I feel from Frieren is equally, if not even more heavy? Frieren realising the reality of her long time friend old man Voll, Frieren patting Heiter's head at the end of his life, Graf Granat being genuinely thankful for Frieren - none of these emotionally heavy scenes were done in a dramatic manner, but somehow the emotion they evoke was very significant, but in a subtle way? Idk how to explain it but I've never felt this specific kind of sadness (if you can even call it sad?) before.

When I first discovered Frieren by a community post in late december I thought it was boring. I watched the first episode and my first reaction will be like "ehhh, is this really good as they?". I kept my self motivated to watch the second episode by asking myself questions about the events from the first episode. "How will this story goes if the demon king is already slained?". Man I'm so glad I gave this anime a second chance. That question of mine was easily answered with Fern's introduction with the story. After that I just fall in love with it, well it can't be helped Frieren anime is just gorgeous. My excitement went off the roof more when I found out that Evan Call is providing the soundtracks for Frieren. "I think I knew this guy, oh yeah he also provided sounds for Violet Evergarden!" I said. I'm so so glad I actually gave this one a shot, or else I could've missed this masterpiece already.

Like Frieren, we know all of that but still choose to not spend time with the ones we love and care about. I think that everyone can understand the fact that people as well as themselves will die one day in the future, they just can't really grasp the meaning of that because it feels so far away, or in Frieren's case, she thought Himmel's death does not matter all that much since he's pretty much just an acquaintance.

This show was a masterpiece. I've never seen any piece of media come close to the LOTR vibe as this one, yet somehow unique on its own as well. It was so well done and the visuals and audio were beautiful as well.

I rarely watch anime nowadays, but Frieren intrigued me and tried to watch it. Let me tell you it really reminds me of Dragon Quest which i really loved and the show connects to me on an emotional level.

I think what helps sell this anime is the High Fantasy aspect of it. We're sorely lacking in any media in that particular Genre. I honestly think it's something so many people did not realize they were missing.

Frieren is Slice of Life Fantasy in the best of ways, and I had no idea I needed that so much.

i think a massive reason i enjoyed frieren so so much is because of my separation from anime for a few years, all that time built up and made frieren so stimulated

the obsession comes from the reflection of our lifes. life is over in a blink,we go from young to old. even doe our appearances ages we are still young inside. it come to the point we feel like we are staring trough a window of life trough our mortal shell. hopefully there's more to this existence, if not well its been fun.

The reason I love Frieren, is the same reason I love Star Trek. It is a story of hope.

They don't shout. Even in the middle of the most extreme battle, they don't scream. Even when hurt, or betrayed, or in danger, they don't shout. They only rise their voices when they are far from the other person. Can you understand how refreshing and amazing and beautnful is to have an anime where not a single character shouts constantly?
