Además, en Brasil están MUCHO MÁS mezclados con otras razas, por eso en Argentina viven 2,5 millones de ciudadanos italianos (argentinos con ciudadania italiana) y en Brasil apenas 500 mil. Argentina tiene 45 millones y Brasil 220 millones, la proporción es ENORMEMENTE MAYOR en Argentina. También añadiría algo que la gran mayoría de argentinos desconoce y es que gran parte de la geografía italiana fueron parte del reino de España por 300 años… Ahí es nada. El intercambio cultural durante todo ese tiempo fue importante. De ahí a que por ejemplo la embajada más antigua del mundo sea la de España en Roma. Sin mencionar los otros tantos siglos que pasamos bajo dominio romano. La batalla de Lepanto la encabezaron el imperio español, las repúblicas y ducados italianos y otras órdenes militares contra el imperio otomano y es considerada una de las más grandes batallas navales de la historia. Entre aquellos valientes se encontraba Don Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra donde acabó malherido. Podría seguir con muchos más acontecimientos… Con esto quiero decir que el intercambio viene ya de mucho antes.

I think this is one of the reasons why the Spanish that was already spoken there was taken as the vehicular language and there are Italian variants in the spoken words.

No, it makes no sense. For example in Brazil, the Germans also arrived from different places and could not understand each other, and few different languages developed. Italians in Brazil instead lost their language with only one generation and the reason is very simple, Portuguese is so similar to Italian and easy to learn. For the Germans it was not. So the German is the second most spoken language in Brazil despite Brazil receiving much more Italian immigrants. And for Argentina I think is the same reason.

Different dialects?? No mate, Italian is Italian.. maybe different accents??.. Even so.. probably Italians picked up Spanish very quickly because both languages are very similar.. My grandfathers dad was Italian and spoke little spanish.. Now my grandpa is Argentian, he spoke a bit of Italian and full Spanish..

As an Italian American, I love seeing stuff like this. You don't often find places outside of Italy with large populations of people of Italian heritage. Whenever I listen to someone speak Argentinian Spanish, it sounds like they are speaking Italian, but the words are Spanish. I find it has one of the most sing-songy cadences of the Spanish dialect. I think it's awesome. People are arguing Spain vs Italy and it's like why can't you embrace all three cultures (Italian, Spanish, Argentinian). Sounds awesome to me ✌🏻

As an argentinian, i was raised in the 80s in buenos aires. My mom and her sisters were from Manduria and Taranto, and spoke manduriano and italiano regularly at home. Italians kept coming to argentina even up to 1950s (my family came in 1952) after the second world war. The neighbourhoods of Villa Madero (la matanza) and Mataderos (bs as city) were still packed with italian and other dialect speaking italians back in the 80s. I used to go to diferent stores in Villa Madero and talk manduriano with the owners.

Living here I've discovered more words that we adapted from Italians, like "facha" in argentinian spanish, that comes from the italian word "faccia" = face. the thing is that we argentinians don't mean exactly face (rostro, cara), we use the word to say that someone is really good looking: "qué facha!"

Usually the south Italian people went to USA while the north/Center Italian had decide to start a new life in South America. Im from Argentina, Spanish descendant... and the best tradition they left us is the sundays lunch with the family, and a big a table!

From 1860 to 1880, Argentina was the main destination of people leaving Italy and the overwhelming majority were from northern Italy, NOT southern Italy. Generally speaking, more northern Italians went to the Latin American; whereas more southern Italians went to USA. To learn more, I recommend books such as Donna Gabaccia's "Italy's Many Diasporas" or Samuel Bailey's study of Italian immigrants in New York and Buenos Aires.

Creo que hay algún error en lo que decís. En 1861 se produce la unificacion de Italia con la derrota del Reino de las Dos Sicilias, que abarcaba todo el sur de Italia desde Nápoles hacia abajo, más Sicilia. Este hecho, sumió a el sur italiano en la miseria más profunda, además de muy cruentas represiones de sus habitantes por parte de los ejercitos del norte que respondían al nuevo rey de Italia. De esta manera desde ese año la inmigración de los italianos del Sur fue en sostenido ascenso. La mayoría de los los italianos que vinieron a la Argentina eran calabreses, sicilianos, puglieses, napolitanos y marchegianos. De hecho a los italianos en Argentina se les dice Tanos, como aféresis de Napolitano. No digo que no haya migración desde otras regiones de italia, pero claramente en Argentina la mayoría son italianos del sur.

Que en USA fueron casi todos del sur en particular de Sicilia es cierto, pero en Argentina dudo que la cantidad que vino del norte sea mayor que la del sur, acá la mayoría vino de Nápoles ( sur) y después Génova ( norte). Si hablas con Italoargentinos que conozcan su historia familiar vas a ver qué en general tienen tanto del sur como del norte. En mi caso son de Génova , Lombardía y Calabria. Otra cosa a corregir es que si bien en Argentina hubo más migración italiana que española post 1860 sigue pesando más la matriz mestiza de español -indigena. Sí, el 65% tenemos algún ancestro italiano pero el 80 por ciento tenemos algún ancestro indígena y casi todos algún ancestro español. Después en la clase media es normal que veas que los argentinos lucen blancos mediterráneos porque prima la mixtura inmigrante español-italiano y está diluida la sangre indígena ( pero está y lo ves en analisis de ADN mitocondrial ). En la clase más pobre prima claramente la ascendencia indígena, y en los últimos 50 años la matriz genética indígena creció cada vez más. No somos ni por asomo italianos

It is not my opinion. I am speaking about the immigration period from 1860-1900. The majority of immigrants who went to Argentina during that period were from the North-Center. Whereas, in the USA, immigration from Italy accelerated in 1890, and it was more than 80% from the South---and that never changed. Immigrants from the south defined migration to the USA. If you were from Northern Italy and you migrated to the Americas, you were more likely to Latin America. Of course, the sending provinces shifted over time. The earliest immigrants to Argentina were mostly from Piemonte and Lombardia. Once you get into the 1900s, people from Sicilia and Calabria are become more numerous. So, in the end, yes, the Italo-Argentinian population is roughly half north/center and half south. The USA by contrast is more than 85% south descended. Again, we don't need to rely on opinion. The data is there.

Yes, I worked throughout Latin America several years ago. There was also a huge migration wave of Italians, Spaniards, Germans, and some French to South America after WWII. I found the most Italians in Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil and Chile to a lesser degree. Lots of Germans also in Argentina.

No. This migration waves were prior to both world wars. And it wasn't to "south America", it was to Argentina and in a small proportion to Uruguay and the south of Brazil.

And, many Argentina footballers often hold dual citizenship; that means they can choose to play either for Argentina or Italy. Plus, I also observe that the Argentinian culture also emphasizes the family values like the Italian one does. They are very respectful toward their elders. To me, Argentina is like Italy of the South America.

There are many Argentinians who have Italian heritage due to the huge migration to the Americas, specifically South Brazil; Argentina and the US. I’ve heard an Argentinian saying from my friend who goes: “We’re just Italians who speak Spanish.” There are also quite a lot of Germans, ironically, in the same places plus Chile.

@@danieleyre8913 Depends where you are in the U.S. In the Northeast / Great Lakes, especially around the big cites such as NYC, Philadelphia, Boston, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Chicago etc. is is not over blown. There are millions, if not 10's of millions of people in those areas that have Italian ancestry.

But my salient point is: 1) Fewer Italians emigrated to the USA than to the Southern cone of South America. 2) Italian immigrants in the USA did not make a major impact on the nation’s mainstream culture & values & architecture like they did in Uruguay and Argentina & Southern Brazil. 3) These tens of millions of Americans with Italian ancestry today whom you speak of are not actually very Italian anymore. They’re Americans first and foremost. They were overwhelmingly only from the Southern regions of Italy anyway (mostly Campania or Sicily. And Sicilians are a breed apart from Italians anyway). The Italian immigration had a regional effect in Brazil, similar to the U.S.. Italian immigration had a cultural effect in southern Brazil, but not Brazil as a whole. The same applies to the U.S. Italian immigration and culture had a large effect in the urban areas in the Northeastern U.S., but not in other areas. You obviously have little knowledge of the urban areas in the Northeastern US, or you would realize how strong Italian ancestry and family culture is there. As far as Italians in the U.S. integrating into U.S. society, that is true. But, that is true of every single immigrant group after a few generations. Recent Hispanic immigrants will just become everyday "Americans" after a few generations. There is already a loss of Spanish use and Hispanic identity even after one generation in the U.S. The same holds true in South America. The people of Italian ancestry in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay see themselves as citizens of their current countries first and Italian ancestry as second. I was born in Italy, now live in the U.S. and have family that lives in Brazil and Argentina. I know how this works from first hand experience. I don't think you do.

In my own suburban district, there are 2 Italian sports complex, an Italian association club and 5 Italian+argentina flagged community buildings that are renter out for parties, meetings and Italian culture activities. Hell, in my own street there were 4 direct Italian descendant couples who taught me to speak Italian when I was little, unfortunately they either passed away or went back to Italy to live their last days with their relatives who moved to Italy for a better life ... Ironically their great grandparents moved from Italy to argentina for a better life. QEPD don Turi, doña Carla, don Fausto, don Teófilo y doña Rita.

Interesting video. I had always wondered why spoken Argentinian Spanish often has an Italian like intonation to it. Obviously, I assumed there was some Italian cultural heritage, but I neglected to look into it.

We are the Italians of South America, as an Argentinian we could consider us a mix between Italian, Spaniards and South American Indigineous, is so common find an Argentinian with Spanish, Italian or both origin surnames. Jorge Luis Borges one time said "Los argentinos son italianos que hablan español" Translate: 'The argentinians are Italians who speaks Spanish'. Many Italians had migrated to Argentina sometime 18th century. In fact former Argentina president Galtieri was an Italian descent. Even the present Pope is also an Italian descent. No wonder that Argentina is so Italian rather than Spanish although the official language is Spanish. Argentinians have been able to absorb Italian culture. You can see it in their food and way of Italians. Italians are also inventors of machineries and forms of technology. Italian immigrants were instrumental in developing the railway and power system of Argentina.

From Córdova, Argentina, born and raised here: I have Italian blood on both sides of my family: Surnames known on my father's side: Vanella and Iudica, from Sicily.

my city , La Plata, has recived many italians during the fundation in 1882. The workers many of them were from different parts of Italy. in that time (and after WWII ), the italian constructors were the most qualified. Here the worked to build the most important buildings and houses of course. If you walk for La Plata you easily will see the tipical architecture in their houses. "La casa chorizo" (long houses with kitchen and the badroom in the back and their important rooms all heading to the central patio. Even though you can find the styles of the 1920´s and 1930´s "Art nouveau et art decó". the italian comunity let to posterity italians schools (bibongi school and Dante Allighieri school) and an important hospital .(hospital Italiano ), and neighbourhood clubs, like "Circulo siciliano", "Circulo Lombardo". Also here we used to have franc masonery lodges from Italians. regards!! from La Plata.

Argentine Spanish has a thick Genovese accent have a strong accent about Genova. Boca was a quarter of Genovesi, about 500 thousend.

You have to take that into account. Brazilians have more Portuguese blood mixed with Africans roots. Get your facts straight, do your homework

I know Argentina very well for a long time. Argentina WAS very Italian, now is plenty of people from Bolivia, Peru, Chile and so on. Now is similar to the others latin-american countries. The amount of Europeans and direct descendent that 4-5 decades ago were majority now are minority.

Another italian foods very common here: Focaccia (a kind of bread), Titamisú (a dessert), Calzone ( dough similar to pizza stuffed with mozzarella, basil...) Caneloni/cannelloni, Gnoccis/ gnocchi (pasta), Pommarola (sauce), Panettone (in christmas) and a lot more. Even our tradition of eating a lot of bread with food, lot of pasta, accent, vocabulary, talk using hands to gesture, the fact that if you go to a school and ask 30 kids their last names 1/4 at least have Italian descent! Really nice video and as almost everyone said there was good research behind it, contratulations! Just one thing: we don't drink the Fernet alone as an apperitive (it's almost undrinkable, really bitter), we mix it with Coca-Cola (30% Fernet and 70% Coke in the glass) and some ice and then it is really really tasty!

@@lukecole5056 no, as her surnames shows: Franco, which is a very common Spanish last name; and Carolichi which is Croatian and comes from Karolić, this is because her ancestors were from Dalmatia which were under Italian rule, so this suname was Italianized to "Carolicci" and then Spanishized to "Carolichi"

Uruguay is also a mix between Italians and spanish

Lo único que quedó de los Españoles es el idioma…que incluso lo transformamos y hoy en día se diferencia mucho. Siendo mitad italiano de parte de la familia de mi madre me identifico más con Italia que con España Habiendo estado en ambos países nunca me sentí mas en casa que cuando fui a quedarme en casa de familia de una gente del sur, en Matera. Es increíble lo fácil que se hace aprender la lengua. En solo 3 meses me comunicaba 100% en italiano con todos, hasta cuando iba a hacer tramites burocráticos. Italia ❤ Argentina Unidos por sangre

Aquí en Brasil es lo mismo, mucha inmigración italiana, forma de hablar, comida, cultura y acento, sobretudo en San Pablo.

Its Italian because its Awesome and has awesome roots; it no chance that the great Roberto Baggio went on hunting trips there; as a prominent Italian mentioned d in a football video " Buenos Aires Is Napoli".. Messi has Italian roots, as did Maradona form his maternal side. The shared amazing Laltin culture is lovely and a point was brought up that All great composers of the Tango have Italian roots; Im no expert but would not be surprised.

Not all tango composer or interpreters, nir the majority, but some among the most prominent were of Italian descent: Pugliese, Troilo, Piazzolla, Di Sarli, D'Arienzo, D'Agostini, Homero Manzi, etc
