Why Inmates Act Out In Solitary Confinement | Stephen's Story | FRONTLINE

Subscribe on KZread: bit.ly/1BycsJW
Hiding razors, slashing veins, causing chaos. That's what Stephen Kirkley is up to in solitary confinement. Stephen is one of the worst behaved inmates in the solitary unit of the Maine State Prison. He's serving a five year sentence for robbery. He says he causes trouble just to let the guards know he can. Maine State Prison is trying to reduce the number of inmates in solitary. This is how they're working with Stephen.

I've had similar conversations with inmates as a correctional officer. The entire point of a correctional officer's job is to promote positive change in offender behavior. Offenders have to want to change though. You cant force them to change.

this country isn't concerned about what will happen upon release. This country has both the means & cash flow to properly help people who's mistakes land them in correctional facility's everywhere. In this land it's all about$$$$, Not ending recidivism. The correction centers make to much $$$ to help end people's problems, it's much easier to call people names, animals& such, rather than deal with WE AS HUMANS & SOCIETY has FAILED THE HUMAN RACE overall. It's really sad when we live in the so called greatest country yet we poop on our own, while judging other's crucially...

O.G. Ben Der Done Dat some people can't be healed but even they should be treated well but not return to live in society. I agree. It would be a much more difficult question to ask: what is society doing wrong, and how are they creating criminals.

Berly Agreed some people need to be caged. Countless others can be helped however, it's much more profitable to lock people up. And what society doesn't understand is those doctors in there most are rejects in the working world. Either malpractice or inability to perform lead then to correctionals. So the so called help is only their for the pay check, every now & again someone will care here & there. At the end of the day WE AS A SOCIETY can do so much more. BERLY I APPRECIATE your positive feed back

***** that is really sad that they feel like they need to ask a stranger for advice and its also risky because who knows what's on the other side, But this does not create criminals. A couple raising children alone is also probably a new thing, in the past their were villages and communities.

I think there should be a nation wide revamp in rehabilitating the inmates in isolation, but they should stay in isolation if they earned their place there. They have put themselves in a prison inside of a prison because of their constant terrible decisions and dangers to others. You earn your place in solitary.

@joyfulvulture GP = general practitioner. Psychologists get a PsyD or PhD although some states accept a Masters in Psy. It is MUCH simpler to become a psychologist, although still difficult. Psychologists do not have prescriptive authority. They do not follow the medical model of mental health and therefore are not medical doctors. Hope you learned something.

I have 175 inmates and there is a CO with a 40 person volunteer program. ive learned a lot of there names and regularly speak to them and promote pro-social behavior. The prison doctor is a champ for the way he connected with that prisoner and treated him as equal rather than inferior. Sometimes that small gesture of respect is all it takes to get a damaged soul who thinks theyve "heard it all before" to listen in a diff way. Hes prob the kind of doc who wishes he cld do more for these guys bc he doesnt think hes doing enough to make a difference when in reality, his approach has prob saved a few lives over the years. You can tell he is a good man that was stripped of his humanity for a ROBBERY CHARGE. Don’t get me wrong I think solitary is necessary but only for the people that are legit crazy or harm other inmates. Also this physiologist is such a great dude, every prison should have one of him

Find it really crazy, there so quick to diagnose you with mental problems if you don't comply, they need to understand they want attention and this seems the only way to do it, acting crazy! Because acting in this way gets Officers, Officials etc talking to you, if you don't make noise it doesn't seem like you're heard in confinement.

It should be soo bad that they don't ever want to go back... The problem is that they get hot meals, warm showers and clean beds... They should shower in horse piss. Their cells should be refrigerated in winter and heated in summer. Their food should be moldy, and their drinking water should contain a percentage of pool acid. They should get handfuls of ciggerettes every morning and bottles of whiskey every night... I'm sick of seeing inmates get out of the joint and look 20 years younger than anyone their own age... Like a lot of these punk little felons cling on the "I don't have a dad and that's I'm so messed up" lie that totally basically disregards their poor moms and it's total BS and only said for them to run away from responsibility. No one needs a father to know how to be decent responsible human being. If anything the last person to learn those from would be their responsible more than likely addicted fathers. Their mothers tho can easily be used as their examples, striving for their kids, staying by their dysfunctional useless sons, trying hard to keep the family's head above the water even in extremely difficult situations and doing their best for their kids to have better lives than them. They can learn responsibility and being decent and committed from their poor moms. If they didn't have a mom they'd be balling their eyes out crying for real that time.

Original "the issue isn't these people.. its the society they live in. he is a product of his environment and capitalism benefits from this system of self destruction in many ways." Updated "this opinion was held without actually researching very much. 5 years later I've looked into the topic a lot more and read many studies about behavior genetics and how much our environment actually effects us. I've come to the understanding that we have no free will and we are the products of our genetics + environment. our genes are who we are and make decisions based on environmental stimuli. so when you break it down and you put people in genetic groups you'll find that "these people" are genetically more likely to have violent behavior and have questionable morals compared to other genetic groups. our genes determine literally everything about who we are and what we will likely become. our environment will give our genes decisions to make but in the end its our genes/ancestors behaviors that will determine our potential outcome. it is not by chance that asians and whites have such powerful societies while "these people" barely have anything and can't even maintain the infrastructure others have left them. Jason Horton the problem I have with this person and people like him is that it is also the truth that no one cares about his circumstances or reasons so the bottom line is it is up to him/us to make decent choices. And there is a moment before any action (as intelligent sentient beings) when we all have the chance to choose. The nasty part is that young people are ignorant so by the time they figure out they have made bad choices they have already ruined their lives.

La Gom you need to look into the venus project, its like you're saying. a system for the people, there is no money, no economics its a resource based economy that is automated and set up to create a better environment for the planet and the people. the designer was a brilliant scientist/ psychologist that believed the environment shapes human behavior and if you put people out to fend for themselves they will seek opportunity at every cost. basically the structure to capitalism. not trying to dog capitalism it may have worked when there wasnt as many people but know there are to many people and the idea of taking advantage of the environment and people for profits and advantage on others is having terrible draw backs on the planet and our people. there is a far better way and i believe sticking to a system like this will end us or put us in a very poor place. look into the venus project its a awesome proposal to most of the worlds problems.

It is darn sad to find brothers and sisters inside whom needs caring and nurture in what is mssing and that is Love. I have just started in the Prison Ministry with the SDA basically when asked if I can assist 3 brothers and sister whom have found themselves on the otherside. Have visited them, prayed and listerned to their stories, laughed and shared the Answer to all the Problems we all face in Life and that is JESUS CHRIST, even Stephen Kirkley can be helped and I mean completely, for I also was a lost and hopeless case that could have found myself in dangerous situations because being a rebel is what satisfies the darker side in us even when we know the result. You know sometimes, the simplest solutions is just listerning and caring for these 'harderned' ones without even judging them and I genuine Love and Care not for show can break down the 'hardest' of all people down to the easiest people one can face. I cannot do this on my own but In the Great and Loving GOD that I Serve, JESUS CHRIST. I hope my brothers and sisters near to Stephen are readind and watching these footages can get up and take the 'challenge'. Fear nothing and doubt nothing for the LORD need us to touch souls that no-one cares and I mean 'Truely Cares' GOD Bless.

There has to be solitary confinement for the worst of the worst. It is not legally or morally permissible to put the baddest bunch of the apples in with the rest who are just trying to do their time in relative peace. The prison is responsible for the safety of their staff and inmates. Solitary confinement should not be used as a routine punishment or compliance tool though, there has to be a better way to manage MOST of the problem inmates.

Matthew L yeah you could tell them to go stand in a corner. These are people who can't be reasoned with. They've decided not to follow the rules. What do you do with someone who won't listen? Sometimes there just aren't any good solutions so you employ the most effective solution.

What's so amazing how about this dr. Banner, people are put into solitary confinement and are literally losing their mind because of it, he's just doing his job so he can get paid and go home. He can care less about these people in jail he's amazing to you and you only

@@stephainesmith9311 Yes he is doing his job, but that doesn't mean he only cares about the money. Some prisoners need to be kept separated from other inmates, maybe not for long periods of time but they do in certain circumstances. For all that it's worth, Dr. Bannish connected very well with the inmates and showed real compassion, his subjects even expressed that multiple times. Try and look at the bright side

Stephanie smith, jesus are you on every post about this Dr. get a life, I responded to one earlier but since then have seen like five more of your comments all saying the same thing. you are just the kind of person that someone would get tired of helping, no wonder you have personal vendetta about Dr. Bannish.
