"Turned Out": Sexual Assault Behind Bars (Full Crime Documentary)

SUBSCRIBE: bit.ly/2CwckC3
-
Narrated by actor Danny Trejo, "Turned Out" looks beyond the shock and inhumanity of prison rape to the intricate social hierarchy that keeps it alive.
Filmmaker and investigative journalist Jonathan Schwartz went deep inside Alabama's infamous Limestone penitentiary to uncover the long-term causes and consequences of prison rape. With a startling lack of inhibition, five inmates reveal the workings of an elaborate inner society. In Limestone, sex is the gold standard, men sell their bodies for bags of coffee or chips, and makeshift families are cobbled together out of fear and cautious love.
Roughly a fifth of men serving in US prisons have been raped and looks into the prisons which allow this type of violent, sexual behavior. The documentary continues to detail how prison relationships work. It appears to be all about power and a terrifying, continuous game of who is on the top and bottom of any totem pole. The horrific stories of these men detailing their sexual assault will set you on edge. They absolutely are criminals, but they are decidedly human. There's so much emotion in all of us, the audience cannot help but be hooked within moments.
This is a fascinating, if inherently disturbing subject and video. We find the prison subculture-gangs, isolation, the bizarre barter system based around junk food-and all the myriad dynamics at play to literally be a world unto itself.
"Turned Out": Sexual Assault Behind Bars was the first documentary to capture prison life with the clarity of Full High Definition videography. Given the recent and severe prohibitions on filming inside many state prisons, it might be one of the last. Kudos to the production team on that one.

I worked in a prison in North Florida. I'm an LPN. A 20 year old male inmate was brought to us in medical for a PREA (prison rape elimination act). He said it had been going on for weeks, maybe longer. He was afraid to tell anyone until it was so bad he couldn't hide it anymore. The pain was so intense that he couldn't defecate and was afraid to eat. The herpes infection had spread all over his face, in his mouth, his rectum, anus and genitals. He was crying. The boy was only 120lbs. He had lost bowel control from the repeated raping. The officers knew it had been occurring and didn't care. This kid's entire life was destroyed all because he'd been involved in drugs and went to prison. He hadn't hurt anyone. Just himself. He'd lacked family support. And now he needed reconstructive surgery on his rectum and anus and would have HSV2 for the rest of his life. The possibility of Hepatitis was extremely high, as well as HIV. But he was transferred to another facility before we did labs. I had to go to the restroom after I gave him the cocktail and completed my part of the PREA with him, so I could cry. It was one of the most devastating and inhumane moments of my life. No one deserves that. It made me so angry and I felt helpless. I couldn't fix it and I couldn't change it. I was useless to him.

Warden David Wise is responsible for every crime that occurred in his prison. When the head dude says, “I wouldn’t want to work in a prison where the inmates didn’t have some vices” he basically is allowing for crime. What a horror to be in the prison with leaders like that. I had a friend that I grew up , we dated in high school but we broke up. We also remained in each other’s lives because we were friends. He went to prison at 20 or 21. I told myself that I would not be like friends that stop talking to you , I truly cared about him as my friend. I visited on occasion, not often because he was at different facilities and they were far away . I put money on his books every so often . I wrote him and gave positive affirmations to keep him from being bored or lacking outside interaction. I prayed for him to be safe and come out and be successful. I kept in touch with his mom . I never allowed myself or anyone else speak negatively due to him being in prison. And how was I treated after 7 years? Like 💩 . He came out and did a complete 180. Told me I should have visited more. People nowadays been messing him over with his business, so now he says he doesn’t have any friends. He spent very little time with me . The list goes on and on , and the crazy part is it wasn’t for ulterior motives, like I wasn’t expecting anything from him other than be there when he was down . Yet , he treated me like trash .

The way LaMark described how he brutalized all those young men was DISGUSTING and APPALLING!!! He described his deplorable acts in such a matter of fact way. He felt no remorse for ANY of what he’d done! I wonder if they hook up with their “prison wives” from time to time when they get back out into the real world. That’s quite the extreme, to go from loving on (and in) a man, to then suddenly get out and become “straight” and not desire something they’ve indulged in for years. Any woman dating or married to a current or ex-convict has my heartfelt thoughts and prayers, cause IT COULDN’T BE ME! Prison is Sodom and Gomorrah. ANYTHING goes. It’s a constant cycle of abuse. The victims eventually become abusers themselves. It’s tragic.

They used his butt and mouth. They bust most of his teeth out when his tooth scratched an inmates d***. He was in prison because he was poor and black. He had 2 ounces of weed on him when arrested. Public defender was useless. Judge said he was making an example of why not to sell drugs. He sold weed and weed only because he didn’t want anyone to get addicted. His last letter gave all of the terrible details and asked to be forgiven for killing himself. He had a good heart.🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽😢😢 R.I.P.

The dude was new to jail and thought you had to rape to have status in there. We beat the living shit out of him and he checked into protective custody and we did everything to make the victim feel better afterwards. For example we gave him canteen items, gave up our phone times so he could call his loved ones and made sure his family had a ride from the city to the next few visits.

She said it was her first time on the wing, so she didn’t know the inmates. She said she went to the youth’s cell, asked him if he was okay, and he told her he had just gotten ganged raped. Unfortunately studies prove that it does make a huge difference to have Fathers in the home. Men don't fear a womens authority. If a young boy is growing up with his mum and mischievous, with no male figure to squash that bad behaviour. Then that boy is more likely to continue on being mischievous. The right and healthy Alpha male leadership, energy in the household makes a huge difference to the lives of children. This is why the political agenda was to overthrow the nuclear family structure within the black community.

I completed an internship in a prison during my college years. I’ll never forget this dude who was abt to be release. Did time cause he got involved with a 15 yr old girl (according to him she lied abt her age). Anyway he was gonna be out on parole so his wife gave her kids to her mother so that he be granted parole (since he’s a s e x offender, kids couldn’t live under the same roof). He was in the “box” cause he S.A another inmate. So an officer asked him “does your wife, that woman who gave her kids away knows you in the “box” cause you ra pe d another inmate”? Dude was like “it wasn’t even like that… we were, you know. And then he didn’t wanted to give nothing” … never felt so dig usted in my life.

Not all dudes in prison get down like this. This is a documentary aimed at prison love. There is plenty of dudes locked up that don't fuck with boys 😂
