Why identity matters in education | Mawule Sevon | TEDxBowieStateUniversity

Dr. Mawule Sevon vividly recounts her journey as a first-generation American born and eldest daughter to Togolese immigrants, navigating the complexities of identity, ethnicity, and education. Drawing from her experiences as an educator and researcher, Dr. Sevon emphasizes the profound importance of visibility for both students and educators in fostering inclusive, affirming learning environments. Through touching anecdotes and insightful reflections, she highlights the transformative power of embracing one's heritage, advocating for diverse perspectives, and creating spaces where every individual feels seen and valued. Dr. Sevon's impassioned call to action resonates with the TEDxBowieStateUniversity theme of "Legacy Ignited," inspiring audience members to ignite positive change by embracing their unique identities, amplifying diverse voices, and championing educational equity and justice. Her message serves as a catalyst for empowering individuals to ignite a legacy of transformation and inclusivity in schools. Dr. Mawule Sevon is a practicing school psychologist, behavior analyst, and researcher focused on seeking educational justice for Black students. She is also an alumna of Bowie State University’s school psychology graduate program. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Thank you, Dr. Mawule Sevon. I'm a half-Thai person who grew up in Thailand before moving to the US in middle school. I'm a native English speaker and a natural-born American, but I'm also more than that. (To this day, I don't understand the backwardness of the American food system.) I appreciate that there are others out there who have similar experiences.

Hello! Thank you for sharing how my story resonated with you. Several people who live in two worlds have told me that, although their stories differ, they see the connection between my life and theirs. I appreciate your comment.
