Why I Stopped Using a Dishwasher

Wash your bowl: mnmlist.com/wash-your-bowl/
Nearly every day of my life I had used a dishwasher. Go figure. My parents used one. My grandparents used one. It’s been in every home I have lived in…. and when it wasn’t available (broken or kitchen remodelings), it was a source of great stress. Dishwashers get loaded, started, and emptied. End of story. Or so I thought.

Josh, you're full of horse shit. Swab one of your dishes, you'll see what you get on a petri dish whatever scum is left on your "washed" dish vs a dishwasher that doesn't waste thousands of gallons of water.

We've lived without a dishwasher for several years, and we were fine, but I almost cried with joy when we got one again! There is something so satisfying about cleaning the house at the end of the day, drying my sink, and starting the dishwasher before I go to bed. Also, it's so much easier to wash them when I don't have a small baby.

Strange that people talk about how they like washing dishes. Isn't there something else you would rather do with that time? Would you wash clean dishes? Using the dishwasher is a result of intelligence, and recalculating and getting rid of bad, outdated habits, such as compulsively turning off the lights when you have LEDs, or manually vacuuming instead of using a ROOMBA. Washing dishes by hand wastes both time AND water. It's also less sanitary. You can empty a FULL dishwasher in under 60 seconds flat. It would take you an hour to do that much dishes by hand.

Same here. But I was using my dishwasher anyhow until I decided to move. I packed up most of the dishes except for 2 dinner plates and 2 lunch plates. I'd rinse them after using them and then wash them at night. It's so easy that I'm thinking that I might not even install a dishwasher in my new house. I just started watching Joshua's videos a couple of days ago, and he inspired me to get rid of a bunch of stuff that I was planning to move. In fact, last night I went through a bunch of boxes that were already packed and taped up, and eliminated a whole bunch of things that I don't need... including a bunch of dishes. The thing with living alone and using a dishwasher is that you need a whole LOT of dishes to get through the week so you can run the dishwasher when it was full. I had 12 dinner plates, 12 lunch plates, and 12 bowls. Now I'm only keeping 4 of each and getting rid of the rest. Same thing with glasses, mugs, and flatware. I find that it's a very freeing experience to get rid of excess stuff!

I don’t mind hand washing dishes sometimes. We do have a dishwasher and use it daily. I hand wash certain items. It can be quite calming washing a few dishes. I agree with some points of the video, but I don’t agree that hand washing dishes is faster than emptying the dishwasher. Hand washing a few items each meal may not take long but adding up those minutes throughout the day would take longer than emptying the dishwasher once.

In my experience healthy food uses more dishes, because of prep. To help somewhat, I stock up on chicken when it's cheap, cut it all at once and freeze. That at least decreases the frequency of having to clean/sanitize the cutting board and knife. Vegetables I sometimes but pre-cut and washed, or even frozen (I microwave them to thaw, then saute so they're not mush). Otherwise it would be far to easy to stick with unhealthy stuff for the easier cleanup.

When my wife was alive, we used that time after dinner to talk, to laugh, to giggle, to plan, and to spend time together, because the kids would scatter and not be found. All we asked the kids to do was bring their plates to the counter next to the sink and put all the refrigerator stuff (ketchup, mustard, etc) away. We have 5 kids, so we had a lot to clean every single night. Even though my wife is gone 6 years now, in memory of all the decades of joy as to why we did that; I still hand wash all my dishes, it doesn't matter that I have a dishwasher, I never used it, nor will I. I have hand washed dishes for most of my life so getting rid of the broken dishwasher and not replacing it was no big deal. The thought of tossing a dishwasher into the landfill every few years (because they are made so terribly these days) is disgusting to me. Perspective is everything. I'm 38 years old and I grew up without a dishwasher. When I finally moved out, got married, and had my daughter we were handwashing everything. My wife and I both hate washing dishes and so they would pile up for days, sometimes a whole week getting moldy and stinky, a perfect recipe for vermin or other contaminants. My Saturday mornings would be spent tackling Mount Dishmore; a week's worth of dishes, sometimes taking over 3 hours! It took some convincing from my wife, but we finally caved in and bought a portable dishwasher. I absolutely love it and I can't believe I've gone this long without one. It has dramatically changed our lives: no more Mount Dishmore on Saturdays and we finally have our evenings to ourselves instead of being at the sink. It's so nice having a clean sink every time I walk into the kitchen now! I see your point about project fulfillment but I get enough of that at work and in my hobbies, the last thing I want to do is spend time of my life washing dishes. This is a well-thought-out video, but the clear bias here is that you more than likely grew up with dishwashers and have taken it for granted, making the decision to go back to basics easier. Just my two cents, anyway. +1 Like to your video!

We are in Australia, I never had a dishwasher growing up, I didn't have one in our last house and now have one in our new house. We still don't use it. I am with you Joshua, I get great satisfaction from completing a job, my husband and I talk whilst we are doing the dishes, and I also feel by the time you load it, turn it on and it sort of dries the items can be a couple of hours and I feel like I then have to go and finish the job I started, all over again, when I could have finished it from start to finish in 10 mins earlier in the evening.

After every meal, my brother and I washed the dishes. It was a chore that we would have loved to pass on, but having to work together, it was also a way that we bonded as brothers.

i am not sure how i came across your video but you are a brave soul for posting this video. thank you for preaching your minimalist philosophy to others. we had an old dishwasher that came with the house and for the longest time used it only as a dishrack - never turned it on. I recently got rid of it and replaced the cavity with 3 rollout drawers and got countertop dishrack. I have always hand washed my dishes (married w/ 2 boys) and i too find a little therapy washing them with my hands. I like the routine of getting off my chair after a meal and stand at the sink for 15m to wash the dishes before i head off for a 30m walk with my wife; it really does not take that long to wash the dishes (I have timed myself) for those who think running the dishwasher saves time. I don't think one saves that much time. Yes one may save some water with the dishwasher but one needs to consider the total energy of running the machine (electric + water); I am not convinced the payback is really there owning a dishwasher. WTS, we now are remodeling our entire kitchen with a beautiful quartz countertop and a floating shelf backsplash. We thought of our unsightly countertop dishrack on the new kitchen countertop and actually reconsidering a dishwasher purchase for the sole purpose of using it as a dishrack....Until we saw your mini dishrack in the sink. BAM! what a clever solution. thank you, thank you for the thought. We plan to NOT purchase a new dishwasher now

I really appreciate your point. I remember when I was in my 30's I visited friends with my aged mum. While sitting on their lounge we could look into the kitchen and watched the man of the house loading up their dishwasher. My mum looked over to me and quietly remarked, "In that time you have washed the dished." On the other hand I know the hectic households of my children with their families and I am glad for them to have dishwashers.

I don’t have a dishwasher and I notice how shiny my drinking glasses are compared to my friend’s. Her dishwasher scratches the hell out of hers.

I've always washed by hand and it's always been a time to talk to my son whilst he dries the dishes. Quality time with family and teaches them to clean up straights after too!

I have always hated dishwashers. Even as a child. Seemed to make a lot of the cups dirtier than they were in the first place.

The issue with hand washing is people don't replace the sponge often enough and it gets bacteria on it. Having said that, I've never used a dishwasher. Just please replace your sponge at least once a week. Also, I never let dishes pile up. I find people with dishwashers let the dishes pile up in it, then once they clen the dishes, they have to pull it all out.

My dishwasher is used as a drying rack after I hand wash the dishes. Heck half the time they dont even make back into the cabinet. I just grab whatever I need out of there. Frees up alot of space😀

Totally agree. I’ve never used a dishwasher in my life although my home has one. I wouldn’t even know how to turn it on. I know some people don’t like it but I enjoy doing dishes I love cleaning up and getting everything nice and organized for the next meal. Great video once again.💗

Joshua, I’m addicted to your videos. You speak so well. It does not feel like preaching or making me feel ashamed for having accumulating stuff over the years. We are constantly decluttering and donating stuff but somehow we still have a very well organized home with hundreds of items we don’t need. It feels like a burden and your ideas help me envision myself with a new way of life. It is a mindset change.

I have not always had a dishwasher. My parents never had one growing up and we only got one when we renovated our kitchen just over 10 years ago. I am so thankful for our dishwasher! We are a homeschooling family so 4 of us are home all day almost every, single day. It just saves us so much time every day. We just keep loading our dishwasher after every, single meal until it is full enough to run. We do not leave our dishes sitting around on the counter. There are still dishes we need to hand wash because not all the pots and pans fit in our dishwasher. I don't mind that simple little task. I actually enjoy it but I am thankful not to do all the dishes.
