I went to college finished my computer science degree, then went to work for a bank, worked 10+ a day plus weekends… Was earning a lot of money, and then at 33 a got Leukemia. And that was it! In one day everything was gone. I am 45, cannot work anymore, and all my dreams and ambitions vanished so fast. So now I just enjoy my kids and go about my life one day at the time. I struggle to stay alive, Carpe Diem Guys!! Seize the day,

Same story. My son was taken from me. I tried 3 years to get into contact, no chance. Lost both of my parents right before, it’s like she waited them to pass away before she took her turn. Now i’m in nowhere land desperately trying to convince myself, that is the reason I don’t come along in life anymore…

Seems like there is something deeper here i cant quite put my finger on My last absences that got me fired, i found a baby bird that was dying and took it in for a day, decided its little time it had left and the chance for recovery was worth more than financial security or any societally mandated commitments that i actually loathe... Now im back to a few dollars hustling for my meals, dunno just got fired tonight but now i got more of a taste of what i was deprived of via my time and control over my life I woulda used the bit o cash i earned to scale up but i irresponsibly splurged so clearly i wasnt ready I can double down on everything else tho that does not involve money especially since its warm outside

The way he describes his obsession with work and self-denial in his youth reminds me of the music video "Let's Go" by Stuck in the Sound, where from childhood the man is fixated on a singular goal and once he finally reaches it, everything he denied himself in the process suddenly becomes impossible for him to go back and do.

I lived and worked in Haiti Cuba and Dominican Republic, now I live and work in China, you have no idea how hard people work just to put a meal on the table, your lucky because you worked hard in a rich country, most people don’t have that commodity and privilege, also some people work hard because they love their job, and are passionate about what they are doing, however I agree with you family should always be the priority, a simple conversation with a parent or grandparents is worth more money than the world can ever make, and spending time with a son or daughter is the same the rest is all vanity

the hard cold fact is, many people don't have a choice, the most important factor is, you still have good source of income, which in techlead's case, his investment. If he doesn't have that, i think he'd probably make motivational work video than this

​​@@hiphophead8053 that's some speculation. depends on if you have something planned after the money is secured and bagged. if not, money for survival only solves maybe some first principle problems but not all that remains with finding relationships, sustainable happiness and motivation if you're already not driven financially.

Completely agreed, you just expressed exact my thoughts i am having in my brain. Went through similar course in life. Studied real hard, sacrificed everything for degree, good school, good job etc. Quit my job out of due to unexpected circumstance (out of my control). Currently enjoying my days with my dog, spending time with my senior parents, exercising. Surely i do not get to wear fancy clothes or hat linked to my job no more, but those things are totally overrated. I agree on the phone thing too. And the motivational viral videos going on now. Always enjoy your content, very thought provoking and entertaining at the same!

Agree 💯 currently the im in not so good health with several diagnosis that I live with daily. For mental I’m stressed to no end. I survive day by day, minute by minute. Am I going to work tomorrow? Yep I sure am. I have a family to support so I will get up when my alarm clock goes of at an ungodly early hour, get dressed and go to work. Do I wish I could stop working to focus on my health and mental wellness? Yes with all my heart! I’m saving my money to retire early (at 59 hopefully). So the good news is I won’t be working in my 60’s or 70’s which I believe puts me ahead of the majority (that are not living off the government of course). I just hope I’m alive long enough to enjoy my freedom.

@@jenshark4 If you can... even a 20min walk everyday (outdoors) will help with mental and physical health. If you can/want to do more, try body weight exercises (GOOGLE) I personally cut out all sugars and carbs, and haven't eaten fast food or drank pop for over 15 years. This got rid of 99% of any issues I had. (that goes all the humans out there) YOU GOT THIS!! All the best to you and your family!

My father had same philosophy, and so do I. I did the corp thing in early 20's.. after that, I went solo, freelance. I've never worked retail either. You can pay yourself more than an employer. It's a mindset.

There's a fine line between finding a balance between effort and reward in life, i'd agree that most people fail to make an appropriate long-term assessment of this. Personally i've tried to make decisions that are somewhat optimized, but one comes to realize that if it involves to stray away from a cultural norm it's difficult and really a hassle to maintain in a social setting.

Not a millionaire here. But house and car are paid for and I have plenty in the bank. I work a minimum wage job and saved every penny from it. Didn't have a choice because of child support/divorce. Once you hit a point with money, it just becomes a number. Work because it gives you something to do, not because you have to.

I gave up my job and McMansion in town for a small paid for cottage in the country. Now my rent is my property taxes and electricity. If you change your priorities you may find that you don't need near as much as you think you do.

Thing is. Youve got a point Now I am far from the level of millionaire. But I feel there is a reason why I keep getting burnt out at Jobs to the point that im allowed gouvernment benefits... I am not happy that I have to live the way I am right now but its video's like this. That get me thinking to a practical way of spending my time

As someone in similar situation as you I 100% agree with everything you said (and very well delivered), but of cause difficult to transpose to a person that only just gets by with their current finally situation.

I agree with your perspectives to an extent. It's absolutely essential to work towards obtaining new skills until you reach financial freedom but of coarse you wouldn't go back to a 9-5 you've earned that right. If I could hit the gym all day, get prestige rest, spend time with family, get lost in hobbies travel when I want and not worry about work performance believe me that's all I would do.

You hit bang on the mark....the biggest test was during lockdown was all these people that "work for a living" being forced to stay at home ..yeh sure some could in fact have the type of job where they could do it at home but what perplexed me was the amount of same people moaning about getting paid to stay at home UK Furloughed system during lockdown. So this brought my thinking that for some their work is a pleasure to them to others it's an escapism from their own family life and finally we come to those that unfortunately having nothing in their life other go to work make money and sleep. We can by and large make sacrifices in order to do less work or make less money ..it is possible....yes it is scary not going to lie you will be tempted to go back to your previous way of making money by work....but your mind will tell you your a weakling individual succumbing to monetary ties

@Spectrum Ace Yes for most people but for anyone who has had a successful carrier, after a while, it's just a sport. Being successful at a career, not a job but being a professional takes the kind of dedication that most people just don't have. So once you have achieved it, one begins to question why one is working so much - the money is good and even the lifestyle since you are making over 130K a year; now some professionals can easily make 500K a year or more so you can get burnt out so people take sabbaticals - take time off to recharge or even question your own goals and life. One's health and social skills can go down the drain working at that pace so that is what he is talking about.

@Spectrum Ace I am a female, not a “bruh” and I do not live in a cardboard box. Actually, I own a home in Seattle. I just make reasonable choices w the money I have earned. Be humble and lead with gratitude. I also try not to have a crappy, Negative attitude and I think this helps with success. Everyone defines success differently.

@read me So many victims in this thread. I have a job, I earn money. It's a very minimal income in a very expensive area. I made/make reasonable choices with the money I've earned. **Don't buy in a high/overpriced market and buy WAY below your means, so when the taxes increase 1-2 x per year, you're still able to afford your mortgage payment. My point in posting my comment was to share that the goal is to not get caught up in the rat race and never allow the money to own you.

Some great philosophical insights here.

I did the retiring thing at 35 for 7 years. Tried a bunch of different things but by year 6 I got really bored. I’m back working a menial job but this time around I don’t hate myself for it. I think my mind gave up hope that there’s something out there for me that’s way better than a job. My ego is undecided at times. However, I don’t like the idea of spending the next 10-20 years working a job even though I don’t hate the job. I just don’t like that story.

The people I've seen happiest post-FI have been those who just operate their own businesses. There is a danger though of being the boss / owner, in that it's isolating. I did the retiring thing at 42. Spent 2 years struggling with what TL is discussing here and in other vids. I think I'd rather be just employed doing something with my craft. The benefit of employment is you have competitive colleagues, who keep you honest about your performance. You get a feedback loop of if you're doing well in the world and info that lets you grow. That's kinda nice, IMHO.

Thanks for that video, its like you talk out of my mind. Its nice to feel that someone think the same. I mean there are different kind of personallities which need different type of structure in their life. At least thats what i realized. For myself a job will not fullfill my life. Even if i know everybody need those people to have everything working. But i know people which really seem to need that daily structure. They dont feel comfortable to have more free time or take more responsebility about their life. Its like they need a military coach to achieve something. They feel unsecure without a routine. Often i feel like my days should have 80 hours to work with things i am interested in. Like building a game with unreal engine, develop some new fishing lures and try them out, play video games without the feeling of trowing time. For myself i would like to support local farmers, get fresh food, do exercises to keep myself healthy so i can help my family and friends. Using the time also for my interests instead of being frustrated waiting for the weekend.

This is the TechLead we need.

Simply let's put it this way, various people in different stages of their lives must have varied expectations based on their culture, race, place of birth, upbringing, environment, and family financial ability, among other factors. There is no such thing as a one-size-fits-all answer. Financial independence frequently comes at a cost or at the expense of others, a wide concept that "influencers" can use vaguely or loosely illustrate. Hence whether a life is good or terrible, we must still eventually make our own judgments. So good luck to you, TL! I'm pleased that you found yours and are graciously sharing it with us!

Excellent thoughts

There are two components to this debate. First, people need to do something to make anything happen. Sometimes you need to do hard stuff that isn't easy in order to get anything done. Discipline, self motivation, effort. This can by related to work, projects, events etc. Another reality is that we as individuals are the only ones responsible for our income. Therefore, starting a business on your own makes a lot of sense! At times, the bs people are feed in some companies is embarrassing and kindergarten stuff. Even in these big corporations. This is not to say that you can't make your life great at whatever job you have picked. Being fully responsible for your own businesses and improvement, you need greater discipline and self motivation. I guess that's the perspective. Think for yourself.

These are the luxuries of having won the lottery and been born in the west. I think people born for ex. Bangladesh, Gambia etc are basically trying to survive in third world conditions..

indeed at every level of life you'll see how unfair it is from the starting line. even with western nations some people start out at a severe disadvantage. its like a fractal. at all scales you'll find better off and worse off through no fault of anyones own choices or actions. don't let anyone tell you it's about hard work. it takes being born in the right place right time right family right social status right good looks right brains etc. lots of variables no one has any choice about but are gifted or not out of the gate. not to say it's hopeless but life's odds are generally stacked for or against you based on the starting point and it takes perseverance AND luck to overcome that. not impossible but also not likely. but then some people will pick the exceptions and claim its a rule to justify the unfairness.

What are your monthly expenses?

I agree with the lead on the topic that nowadays people don't need a lot of money to be happy. Most often, they need a phone, a small apartment and some food. Yes, there are people who are interested in more expensive things, from computer games and VR helmets to traveling around the world. But it's worth thinking about and you can understand that biologically we no longer have to fight for every penny, technological progress has gone so far that most of the work left to humanity is service and entertainment.

People seem to confuse having a job with having a career or even better an entrepreneur. People who have jobs are people who don't have much education or skills so they are forced to get a job. Having a career or being a visionary...well that is living your dream. High achievers are usually the only people who can help others or inspire the masses - poor people cannot help almost anyone or inspire anyone. So this business of "hey why don't you get a real job" - that's for people who lack having a vision - people with no dreams - so have a vision - have dreams

I think most of us just want to be comfortable, be in good health, mentally engaged, and maybe live slightly above our means. The last one though is a slippery slope.

Nope, I'm with you. There's so many much more important things in life, to be wasting so much time on something for such little return. If it were worth out time, like it might have been 70 years ago, then I'd be all for it... But you can work 16 hours a day now, and still barely make enough to scrape by with an empty refrigerator... Everything we truly need, God will provide, so I'll do the work that's meaningful and serve him.

On the other hand, I faced the problem that I understand all these things too early (began to understand at school). And at the moment (from 20 to 30) when I logically need to work hard, I think about other things: what do I want from life (especially if I currently have the very minimum for happiness, with a PC and a VR helmet XD ). And what I understood is that I have no incentive to work, because even in the next year I will have all this. I had already worked hard on myself from school and university until now, and at that time I had goals and dreams, but after achieving self-sufficiency, I lost all interest in life. Now in search of new goals and challenges, maybe I'm supposedly a workaholic that I can't live without them.

What i found helped me is sometimes letting my curiosity guide me. By learning new things you create new connections between what you already know and what you're learning, which has a good chance of inspiring you.

My contract ends in September and I have zero plans to renew it. I'm planning to go back to university to live a more fulfilled life, complete a master in entrepreneurship and fucking live the dream. Don't let anybody dictate your life, How you gonna listen to that manager of yours and let them dictate your life when that idiots got zero clues about what they're gonna do with their lives without their job.

In 1991 I gave up my jobs in the music business movie business, and a union carpenter to be a Mr. mom for the next 20 years. I raised my kids, homeschooled them, and loved them entirely. It was wonderful. Then we all split up and I was homeless for six years. Have a plan if you to decide to stay home and raise your kids. I thought my kids were my plan.

Wow to a fellow Mr. Mom. I to have chosen the similar path way as you did to have a greater connection to my son's life and for him to remember me in his later years on what sacrifice I have done for him. One thing is I do tell him often enough of what I am doing for him and it's a sacrifice but I do have a side business where I accept work after mama comes home. And I'm teaching him many ways as to for him to be a DIY guy so he knows how to care for himself and his own house hold when that time comes. And I do as best as I can with finances and not spend to much everyday and eat simple but healthy. It's sad to see what ended up happening to you for 6 years sir. It's not the best outcome after doing all that time sacrifice for your kids. Many blessings to you sir and I sure do hope for the betterment to you in your near future. Many blessings and greater intentions for your self help. 🙏😞🫂☮️

Funny I was in Hawaii and San Diego and came to the same conclusion. I stayed at hostels there so nothing fancy and sitting on the beach not thinking about money made me realize I didn't need the big house and fancy cars-which cuts out a TON of money needed. All I needed is a city I like, good food, people to hang out with, video games when not on vacation like you, and I'm good.

how do you get all that (a place in a nice city, bills, food, other everyday needs) without money. inheritance? rich spouse? most people work their entire lives just to have those things.

I can’t believe there’s people like this I know a lot of people struggling just to make ends meet or people making the money to do what they love..😢 I’ve struggled all my life and I understand purpose and I now understand that your purpose is probabaly the most important thing to pursue …work is love made visible

Currently , my life is totally being spent in front of the laptop. either for studies, searching for what new things to learn, like a sheep, roaming all over the internet without touching grass I developed this complex thought. That, learning is a good thing, and spending time to binge series is a bad thing Idk how these thoughts were being cultivated 💀

Many people follow their passion which is often their work or career and it gives them purpose and much joy. Work for the sake of earning money only is hard work.

I really resonant with this video. I’m getting older and really starting to think about the time and health vs money equation differently.

It would be a valuable lesson if you could go through the mindset and steps of creating a business and being your own boss.

As much as I'd love to be a millionaire Tech Lead like the Tech Lead, the Tech Lead has worked hard to build a life, just to have the best part of it taken away from him. And his millionaire status could not save him from that. Thanks, Tech Lead for showing us what's real.

Haven't escaped yet, but investments have recently become equal to wage. When they're double my income and I have 12 months of savings, I can see work-optional being possible. I've been to Hawaii too. Diamond Head is a decent hike with a view. Honolulu has a tent city of homeless as well. The "paradise" sold there is a money furnace. Great fruit though. How about a travel vlog? As a millionaire, you could show what the world has beyond the cube farm.

Hey Techlead, I agree with you on almost everything you said. On the other hand, it seems like you have worked as much and as hard as a typical person in North America does over their lifetime, you just condensed it into the first third of your life 😅 You’re going to feel the burnout for quite a while, which is ok as it gives you time to think and reason about the important things you can accomplish with your newfound freedom and time.

Stop telling people to quit their jobs, you did not quit your job until you became a millionaire. That was so easy for you. Poople have something called obligations dude.

Sometimes I have frank discussions with executives in the company I work at (Fortune 500 level). Top 1 advice they give me: Make sure to prioritize your personal/family life over work. They all say they wished they had spent more time with their kids and family instead of their career. Now it is too late (for them). They tell me their son is playing video games all day.

Whether desk setup, tech reviews coding or crypto Techhlead always has something interesting and thoughtful to say and is highly deserving of his KZread awards.
