Oh thank you for sharing this great information. In October I ran my fifth Marine Corps Marathon. I had made a goal to run the marathon at least five times (you know to be a real runner) and I made it. However, this last one (Oct 2023) was absolutely horrible and I was in tears just a couple miles in and wanted to quit. I didn’t quit, but I spent all of those miles focusing on how I would never do it again. It was one of the worst experiences for me and I have not run one step since. That’s three months of no running and even worse I’ve gained 20 pounds sitting on my couch. So as you can imagine my self esteem has plummeted. I’m embarrassed to see people. I haven’t told anyone that I’ve gone to crap and given up, until now telling you. Now I watched your video and I’m actually thinking of turning this around and starting over. Maybe I still have something left and I don’t have to be fast or miserable with such a huge goal in front of me. Well, I’ll let you know if I get off my couch in the near future. I hope I can do it. Thanks Coach.

I am sorry to hear about how you felt after October. Therefore, I wanted to point out that being a runner is much more than running a marathon. First of all, is running for the sake of it, for the joy it brings you just to go out and run. Moreover, there are other distances to try, I think people focus too much on running marathons and think it is the only distance that matters, but it isn’t. Half marathons are very enjoyable, it is shorter, so you can up the pace; or 10k races, where you have to up the pace way more, but keep some gas in the tank to finish the race in proper form; and 5k races, where you can go almost all in from the beginning, because it is short and allows you to speed up way more than the other distances. Last but not least, just go out and run without a goal, just for fun, and get those endorphins out of your system 🎉

@Maurorenard82 thank you very much for the great points. They are spot on and I need to change my thinking. There was a time that I loved running more than anything. It felt good and I could work through life’s challenges with every step. Reading your message brings me back to those days, those moments. I appreciate it very much.

Thank you so much for being vulnerable and sharing your story. I am so sorry to hear that you had a hard experience at MCM this year - I know it was an extra warm day, too. To be just a couple of miles in and wanting to quit just shows how much heart you had to see it all the way through. Know you are brave and know that you belong. It's also OK you took a break from the sport - it sounds like you needed it. But I'm glad to hear you're getting glimmers again of getting back out to do something you previously enjoyed. Being a runner gets to be whatever you want it to be!! But number one it should bring you joy. You don't have to do any certain thing or look a certain way to be a "real" runner. You are amazing just the way you are. Hopefully you can get out for a walk this week and maybe, just maybe, you'll feel like getting two feet in the air at the same time. Sending all the hugs!

I think it’s so important to be ok doing things even if we are not the best or even good at it. I was just talking to this small teenage girl yesterday and she was saying how much she loved fighting (karate/kickboxing) because she is not made for it but she still wants to surprise people with what she is capable of. But consistency truly has paid off for her!

Thank you for making this video. It literally brings me to tears, because it's like I'm listening to a big sister who has gone through all of the exact same things I'm going through now. I just ran my worst half marathon.. and this is after I ran my worst marathon (my 2nd marathon). I feel so defeated, but almost like a wake up call defeated. A slap in the face. I've become too cocky running thinking that because I've ran 7 other halfs, I don't need to train as much or as hard or eat well or sleep well or anything. I'm literally acting like a crazy person. I need to fix myself, fix my base miles and reset. I want to feel joy and love for running again. These past 3 months have felt like a chore. And I've hated almost every run I've done. But I honestly have felt so alone in the way that I feel in regards to training. So this video and your others are really helping me reevaluate my running priorities. I'm going to work on being better before I look at signing up for another race. I can do it!

Wow. This was great to see. I really appreciate hearing your story and can relate. I was a very good cross country/ road running athlete in high school. There was some college interest but I decided like an idiot that the party lifestyle was more fun during my Junior year. I jumped into that lifestyle until my mid 20’s. When I got to my 30’s and was married and having a family, I started really having strong regrets over this decision I had made while I was so young. When I turned 40 I found myself in the worst shape of my life. Along with my wife we lost a lot of weight and began running to get our cardio in. I rediscovered my love of running and quickly started getting better. For fun I decided to try a race. 3 years and 19 races later here I am with 2 weeks until my 3rd half marathon. I feel guilty about missing my “peak” time and what I could have accomplished. That fuels me now and I feel blessed that I can at least use my time now to accomplish as much as I physically can with good training. We plan to run our 1st marathon next March. Sorry this was so long, but this video really helped. It’s awesome that we can relate with others by hearing their story. If someone reads this comment just know, it’s never too late to accomplish thing you didn’t think you could. I love videos, like this. Thanks, Coach Jane!

All great advice Jane. Every now and then I think about building up for a marathon and I can certainly cover some respectable distance, my heart just doesn't seem to be in it. It is definitely a commitment and I've "half done" the training before for a full and it never works out well. They also get a LOT harder as you get older. I never want to say never again on it, and it is a question I wrestle with every year -- do I want to run one this year? I am definitely more educated about them but I also enjoy doing what I am doing now. Lots of thoughts. I have run 27 of them though and I loved hearing your marathon journey and how you came back to the distance.

Hi Eddie - I really appreciate this perspective and you sharing your grappling with the decision. I think it's very different for someone like you who has put your time in with 27 marathons...you've worked hard it and you know what it means to push yourself. You're coming from a place of wisdom for sure. For me it was the realization that I never even really gave myself a real chance to be good at it or figure out how to train right. I certainly understand not wanting to put the time into it year after year; I'm having those thoughts myself right now about figuring out what that right balance is because training in 2023 for me was a lot. There is more to life than just fast times and marathons that's for sure 😉

I’m glad that I signed up for training for nearly all of last year: stepped up to a 10K race, then a half, training required a 20 Miler race, then our marathon (CIM). During that time I was coached in form and fueling and we had speed work midweek and long runs Saturdays. I saw my biggest improvement nearly at the end (more like the last two months) and I was still tuning my fueling until the last month. Having people around you who pay attention and have some good experience makes all the difference.

I also am pretty introverted and don't go out of my way to talk to new people so that prob didn't help 😆 Also just pulled out my one book I had back then about running and it has one tiny paragraph about how to fuel a long run and it doesn't even come close to recommending enough. Jane, I am happy to say I signed up for my first half marathon!!! I was wondering if you think it is necessary to have both a tempo run and interval run in my week of training? I am really trying to keep strength training and yoga / mobility a good part of my training but it’s hard to fit it all in.. esp with easy runs. I was thinking - tempo/speed run (alternating every week), easy run, full body lift, rest (yoga/mobility), long run, easy run, full body lift, rest (yoga/mobility) Would love your thoughts.

  • @runningwithjane

Hi Mya! That is so exciting! Just one speed session per week is best for most runners. Totally agree with alternating speed weeks - one week tempo, next week intervals, and then 2 easy runs per week and a long run. The yoga and lift days are great as well! You have a solid plan that allows you to put all the pieces together that way and put aerobic endurance training at the forefront. Wishing you best of luck!

I would add 'Running alone is not enough' - especially for older runners (like me) it is important to warm-up, cool-down and do some form of strength training. Rehab takes a lot of time, is frustrating and can be costly - so a little bit of prehab goes a long way.

I think these were the basics that got me really moving in the right direction, but yep, I battled PF and tendonitis in 2018 and luckily I was able to make it through on my own, but after that I became a huge proponent of consistent strength training and going to the PT when something comes up! Yes, to the prehab!!

And now i can do easy 20 miler runs at 855-9 05 min paces at easier heart rate......do u think i have potential to get 3 40- 3 45 full marathon time? all i have to do is beat 4 hours but i want go under 3 50.......Or i can shoot for a sub 1 44 half but id have shoot for stars with speed.......not sure what i should do with a month half to go.....work on speed 7 30 paces for half? or shoot for long runs 8 30 paces. I feel like i have chance hit a PR at both but i feel like id have go all out at half........IF i do the full do u think i need do negative split? like start out 9 min paces work down throughtout marathon......i feel like i started out to fast at full in 2022 and thats why i hit wall boinked around mile 17........what should i do? half or full u think? should i up my long run training to 22 miles at easier pace and see how it feels? cant make up my mind i feel like if i stay conservative full i can beat 4 or 3 50 for full. I feel like i have more room for error to hold 830-850 pace 26 miles vs trying hold 740-750 pace for half right now.....all i have to do for full PR is get around 3 50 and i can run 20-22 miles for easy 9 min paces long run......which should i go for u think?

I feel like my big problem was running my long runs to hard and to fast in past, as long as i stay in zone 3 during marathon i feel like i can hit 850-8 40 pace.......but to hit a PR in the half i would have hold a 750 to 740 pace at a HIGH heart rate and shoot for the stars......most ive run for 740 pace is 6-7 miles tempo. i did 8 03 pace for 13 in training but it was high heart rate

If your true easy pace is around 9-min. miles than you shouldn't have an issue running a sub 3:50 marathon. True easy pace should be at least 1-min. slower than your marathon pace. To me it sounds like you've been training for the marathon since you're already doing 20-milers, so I'd say do the marathon. But yes, pacing it right will be very important. Ultimately, I know very little about you and your goals so I think you should do what feels right. Well, I was very intimated back then and only talked to the couple of people I knew in the group. And this was also not a group that was great about being really inclusive of all paces - there were times I would run alone if my friend wasn't there in that first year. (The second time around I always ran with my dad.) But also, fueling is pretty tough to wrap your head around if you're not seeking out exactly how to do it correctly...even now I work with athletes who are overwhelmed and don't know where to begin. Lots of parts to figure out.
