Also, even many of the dog-centered videos start with 10 minutes of Jenna crafting (a dog bed out of soap etc) and then only a few minutes of seeing if they like it or not. And if one of them does not want to participate then they are usually free to just go away.

I don't watch Jenna that much anymore but I did watch the videos when she first rescued her Greyhound. She shared so much factual and research based information about how to safely integrate an animal into your home and best protect the well being of the people, the new animal, and the animals already in your home. She's not perfect. But she has consistently shown that she prioritizes the health and well-being of animals, so yay Jenna!

@@beautywearsboots6458 I think even if you could make the argument about Jenna's use of her dogs being "problematic", she sometimes uses her massive platform to shine a light on what it's like to rescue a greyhound (and also how exploitative greyhound racing and blood donation are) or how to take criticism well and care for pets better. She has the reach that an average educational pet channel couldn't even dream of.

@Rach same here. I'm on the autism spectrum, and while I have learned to curb my meltdowns so they happen less frequently, once one starts I have to ride it out like I would a seizure. It always embarrasses me if I feel one coming on and I can't get out of the public. If my parents had social media when I was younger, and was sharing that (even in the guise of spreading autism awareness), I think I'd never get over the embarrassment.

I was a blogger that was starting to see a whole lot of success but my blog was being pushed more and more toward family content (by the numbers and the "experts") which meant so was my IG presence. More pictures of my kids and posts about motherhood. I woke up one day and threw my entire blogging business in the garbage. An extreme response. I saw my blog life enter my real life with a mom of one of my kid's friends treating my kiddo differently because she didn't want to end up a topic of a post. The next day I took everything down. I am a product of abuse, I am not willing to jeopardize my children's childhood. Everytime she had a customer, she'd tell each and everyone of them what my cousin has been up to the past weeks. My cousin hated it SO MUCH. She cried to me a few times about it. Mariya Kuyan I used to give Shay a pass because he was so honest about most things, including his motives and life philosophies and beliefs, and he, for me, was the main reason I watched his channels. He was once so inspiring. He’d regularly have entire vlogs without the kids (especially in those first 2 years of the Shaytards channel, but even several after like when he traveled for work), and those were fan favorites. He was the draw. I think he didn’t actually need to feature the kids for the channel to thrive, they just happened to be there and be a natural part of his life, so his including them was very organic as opposed to exploitive. As I recall, he didn’t even originally intend to be a “family” vlogger but meant for the Shaytards channel to be more candid and less scripted and to serve as a channel to document his weight loss journey as he exited his 20s. Then he ended up becoming the first proper KZread family vlogger just kind of by accident. Not sure how I feel about him today. Part of me sees nothing wrong with genuine and honest-seeming people like Shay or Whitney (of DearNaptural85) stumbling into family vlogging, as they both did somewhat serendipitously, and sharing human moments involving their kids with us fellow humans. And perhaps I’m biased, as she is about Jenna, but I do view them differently than other family vlogging channels. Most others that followed Shay seemed more... fake, and kid-forward, and exploitive, and money/fame-hungry, like the Nive Nulls and Bratayley, and The Prince Family, and The Ace Family did/do. But still, if like, as adults, Sontard/Gavin or even Olivia (Whitney’s kid) ever like, got on NPR and shared how much they actually regretted and hated and resented being in their parents’ vlogs, I would still totally side with them despite how much I watched and once liked Shay and still like Whitney. I’ve even been lowkey hoping for like half a decade now for one of the kids from the exploitive channels (like Audri of the Nive Nulls) to hurry up growing up and teach all the scumbag family vloggers a lesson by setting a precedent and suing the shit out of her parents because it’s the only way they’ll learn to view their kids as humans deserving of autonomy and privacy. And in the case of Audri specifically, there were literally several moments where she told her dad, Austin, explicitly to stop filming her, so he lied and told her the camera was off or said he would turn it off but instead hid it and filmed her secretly. So gross. He was a real user and fame and money chaser down to how he harassed the Shaytards for years trying to get into their circle. The tiny tiny teeny weeny handful of honest vloggers like Whitney and Shay, flawed as he is, just have a different (read: contrived, dishonest, and greedy) vibe than most others who expressly decided to specifically become _family_ vloggers. It should be illegal to film kids for online consumption more that a cumulative 4 minutes a month or something.

There exists zero precedent so we have no data in terms of the psychological consequences of being raised in a vlogging environment. "They made an ignorant tweet 10 years ago and it f*cks them." I hate this. A lot of comments were made when comments like that were acceptable, or comments that really weren't okay even in the time and they've changed since then, yet they're still called racist (I swear the meaning of that word has been long...it's about prejudging based on race, not trying to accurately portray characters in ways seen as respectful at the time despite being seen as wrong now), and they're forever treated like they're bad people. Why should anyone want to change with the times or to be better people if they will literally never be allowed to move past what they once said or did and regret? Sarah Silverman talked about a sketch she did that she deeply regrets, one that had been long forgotten, and yet she brought it up when discussing her biggest regrets, and she ended up being fired from a movie or new TV show, I can't remember which, in just the last month or two. She's being accused of being a racist even though that sketch only came to light because she talked about it when talking about thinks she did wrong.

Children aim to please their parents and I think this may lead to the kids always being ‘on’ and falsifying their own personality. Are these children well equipped to handle the online comments and criticisms? I can imagine the level of vanity and narcissism these kids will inherit due to this level of popularity. What happens when viewership ends? Will they be able to handle that?

These are valid concerns but it doesn't end there, unfortunately. Consider those who grew up as "child stars" _with legal restrictions on their labour etc_ and how many of them suffer psychologically in adulthood - then imagine the level of exposure essentially multiplied by about a hundred. Sure, KZread probably won't exist as a platform forever - but there are already forums out there discussing the absolute minutiae of many KZreadrs' existences. These run the full gamut from Stan forums to allegedly "stalkerish" forums, so these kids - who could never possibly have even understood the concept of consenting to being filmed in all sorts of situations - will have this footage out there forever for others to dissect & potentially obsess over. I'm not so sure that any amount of money is worth that kind of life, generally speaking.

I wanted to get this off my chest for months, so I'mma just do it here. I grew up (mostly my teen years though) in a very abusive home. Emotional, psychological, physical and financial, it was all there. Something I completely repressed over the years but remembered again later was that the abusive figure would often talk about putting our family up on youtube. Because they didn't see the abuse. They thought that both their daughters crying every day, fearing of the parents , being punished for mental health problems or just slight hints of crankiness (again, a toddler and a teen, well behaved and all) and so, so much more other shit...yeah they would always be like 'Oh my god, we're such a crazy and fun family, people would pay fortunes to be able to watch our lives'. Genuinely thinking of profiting from the abuse. My family would eventually be almost the same as the Daddy O' Five case (which i can't even look at because it sets off a whole episode for me). It's not as relevant to the video. But I feel so much better now that I've said it. I was almost there. I almost had the abuse that happened to me and my sister up on youtube for everybody to see.

The one thing I’m thinking about is SBSK (Special Books by Special Kids) and how they’re being effected. They’re a channel dedicated to talking about people with disabilities (of any and all kind) and/or mental illnesses and they use their platform to raise awareness. They’re being effected by these new family guidelines because of whatever reason (I think it’s that there might be predators or something, which is ridiculous because a good portion of the content is about adults, some is about kids; But the point is to talk about disabilities/mental illnesses and remove the stigma around them). The people who run the channel have good intentions and they seem very passionate about their mission. They’ve made a video, talking about the issue (I wish I could remember the name of the video, but regardless). Please check out their channel (not sponsored), I really like the channel and what it stands for.

Being a child ACTOR is thankfully more regulated than it has ever been even though there is still exploitation in certain areas of the entertainment industry but the children of big budget films that are going to be viewed by millions have management, a guardian on set at all times, a tutor, hours are limited as a child can’t work over 10 hours a day I think? And most importantly those kids are passionate about acting and naturally enjoy being in front of a camera portraying a CHARACTER. That’s where family vlogging especially daily channels bother me, the kids didn’t choose to be filmed since the moment they were born. How many hours a day do they have a camera on them? Subconsciously they are always going to have that instinct to “perform” when a camera is on them. Might as well sign them up to an agency lol.

Modeling and acting are different, there are many regulations involved. Time on set is limited, they're taken care of etc. Pageants is pure exploitation and it's disturbing (the sexualization and make the kid look like a little adult, with fake teeth..). Anyways. Modeling (which is basically silent acting) and acting are not as problematic, as Swayze said, the kids can easily be dis-associated from their work. On set, they're playing a character and that's what the public sees. At home, they can be themselves and that stays private.

There are probably good ways to produce family content that is respectful to both the audience and the children. The problem isn't family content or videos with kids in them as a whole. I think the main gripe about this kind of genre, is that some people make their children the center of their channel, and if that channel blows up, the child is now the main(or only) source of income for the family. That is a lot of pressure, and kids are not stupid. They understand full well that if they take their parents up on the usual insisting that "Oh, this is entirely -insert child's name-'s own choice, if they didn't like doing this we'd stop in a heartbeat!", their family will suffer financially for it. At that point it's no longer truly a choice for the children, since it's not "just for fun" anymore. It's the entire family's livelihood.

Agree with 99% of this video. But 1 thing I totally disagree with is the breastfeeding comment at the end. That attitude and opinion is a major part of the problem with shaming breastfeeding families. You chose not to breastfeed, that has been your choice. You are fortunate to live in a country and income level where that choice is yours to make. Do what is right for your family. However breastfeeding is normal, natural and never something to be embarrassed about, period. Any anti breastfeeding comments are nothing but unhelpful.

Not just pet shops giving discount on sick animals. Buying from pet shops says: I like this, keep going. Which makes them breed more (in a puppymill way but with rodents and rabbits) and sell them.

It feels like I am doing something wrong (which is probably true). Nowadays I watch their content now and again kind of to 'check up' and it seems to just get worse. The kids are constantly asked to repeat certain things for the camera. the parents are desperate for validation from the kids like 'I love you's, hugs etc all for the camera it seems like (especially the mom). I just feel so bad for the children and it hurts that there no laws to better protect them. And all the parents do is buy their 5th car...

I think it’s really good that you’re putting these conversations out there for people to consider. No KZread content with kids has ever interested me, but I really agree with you. My family wasn’t very technologically adept so I wasn’t ever filmed for the public but I can’t tell you how much I would have hated it. My own mom has really bad boundary issues which have led to her telling many people very personal things about me, not only without my consent but also after asking her not to. And it really hurts. I do have that sort of relationship with my parents that you mention in the end of the video where I just don’t like telling them anything, and I don’t know if it can ever be repaired. I hope your video makes more people second guess supporting this sort of thing, and if any, their production of it.

I know this is about vlogging, but I used to follow a lot of “mommy bloggers” on IG because their content was beautiful and cozy and idealistic. I long ago stopped following those accounts, and now after watching this I wonder how many of those bloggers used the rewards system to get their child to pose, or how many of those bloggers’ content would suffer the moment they stopped chronicling the lives of their children, while advertising a product or two? I know that blogging for a lot of parents is a way to make extra income, but like Swayze said, the well-being of the child should be prioritized. And the points at the end of the video are a helpful guideline to keep into account while or if we continue to engage these family bloggers and vloggers. As of today, we are truly in a digital Wild West. Hopefully as time goes on, we’ll be able to better regulate children on social media as we do in mainstream media. Thought provoking video!

Your points about pets in this video are so true. I have 2 rabbits (who sadly don’t get along) and they each live in their own 4 foot by 4 foot pen, along with getting about 3-6 hours of outside-of-pen exercise time per day. It makes me SO ANGRY to see what pet stores sell as “rabbit cages,” often a 1 foot by 3 foot cage that a rabbit can barely turn around in. Don’t even get me started on what they pass as acceptable food and treats for rabbits. I know that’s not the main point of this video, but it makes me so sad to think of all the pets that live in misery every day, probably in many cases because a pet store told them/ sold them extremely incorrect information

Potentially putting their child in danger from pedos and stuff, not saying that posting a pic on a public Facebook page wouldn’t do the same thing, but people should be a lot more careful with what they’re posting online, like sure money is great, you can work from home etc, but is it really worth the safety of your child?

I like that as the kid decided she didn't want to make videos anymore the dad just pivoted the channel while still keeping to the original intent of the channel. You should make a video on Family Fizz. I’m kind of shocked you haven’t already unless you’ve never heard of them. They’re a couple from the UK that has 3 kids, soon to be 4 and they originally started off as a vegan channel but now they’re a family vlogging channel. It seems as though their diets are pretty good so maybe that’s why you wouldn’t make a video on them, but if you’re interested in making videos about why family vlogging isn’t good then their a family in the vegan community that you should look into. They talk about being vegan here and there but the exploitative nature of their content is something I’d be interested in here you talk about, and give your opinion on. Each one of their daughters, the youngest being like 18 months or so, has their own instagrams and even their own channels. Their eldest, who is 14 I think, recently uploaded a video involving the brand fashion nova and having her mother react inappropriate clothing. Her reaction is strange and I think the content is inappropriate for their daughters audience. Their middle child makes videos too on toy reviews and stuff like that that clearly her parents regulate. Their Instagrams, apart from the oldest, are run by the mother and are written as if the children are running them which I find a little creepy. Again, if you like to focus more on the diet side of things than I completely understand, however if you’ve made video talking about exploitation of children before and this is a family I never hear about even though they’re content, in my opinion, is very exploitative. I’d really love to hear your feedback and if/why you think that this isn’t how families should be represented.

Thank you for making this video. I agree that kids shouldn’t be the focus of these videos. I used to watch family vlogs a long time ago because I grew up in a single parent household and I guess I was living vicariously through that family. My child’s mother and I also didn’t last together so that probably influenced me as well. A few years ago a made the decision to limit the content that I share of my child for a few reasons. A lot of people who engage on social media can be weird and some of them really feel like they know you, which I don’t want for my child. I’ve had a video or 2 with her in the past, but deleted those videos a while ago. My child mentioned that she wanted to shoot a video with me, but I told her no and explained why I wouldn’t. She understood. Any video that I do regarding her is about parenting and I refuse to include her in those videos (ex: what a vegan father feeds his non vegan child...focused on the food). I would hate to grow up and have my life online and have a bunch of people feel like they know me, especially without consent. But even with consent, we change as we get older and we might regret saying yes to being online as older kids. Anyway, thank you again 👌🏾

This is the most honest and truthful point of view on this topic. Even the family bloggers who are “good people” don’t realize that they are exploiting their children. Especially in the mommy blogger world they all have the same narrative....that their KZread channels have given them the opportunity to stay home with their kids while making an income....so they admit that they would rather be making the money than just being with their kids in the moment instead of trying to get pictures of “this” for instagram or videos of “that” for their day in the life blog. It’s sad and their naivety will come back to bite them in the butt down the road. Especially sad for the kids who will be picked on because mom and dad put video of them potty training on the internet for millions to see.

There's no safe bet when getting a dog, regardless of where you get it, especially if you're adopting an adult dog. Often their history is mostly unknown, if they're abandoned, or come from some sort of mill operation. At that point you only have the evaluation of the shelter to go by. You can get a pretty good idea of what you're dealing with, but you still won't know how the dog will act in any given situation. I had an acquaintance that had two senior american staffordshire dogs, that had never bitten anyone or gotten into a fight, but one day when running around and playing in the woods they got into a doggy disagreement over a stick and it escalated into them almost killing eachother(and there's no safe way for one person to intervene). I sincerely doubt there's a lot of shelters trying to get dogs with a "bite history" adopted out there. There's severe limitations in space and funds in most shelters, and this sadly means that dogs that are more problematic and in need of an owner with a lot of knowledge and experience, are likely just going to be put to sleep. But by all means, if there's a shelter that has a reputation online of adopting out dogs with levels of aggression that the average person won't know how to deal with, look for another one. But again, no safe bets, and your safest bet certainly isn't to adopt from a shelter.

ANYONE can watch the video/post and find out pretty easily where the child lives or where they may be. Not only do some of these channels share where they live but have full shots of the outside of the house and local landmarks so it would be very easily for someone to find them.
