Why I Moved To Portland Oregon - Pros and Cons

1 Year Update: • Living In Portland, Or...
So, I recently moved to Portland, Oregon from New York City. I know, it's very random. However, I wanted to put together a video to quickly provide some insight on why I moved and what there is to do in Portland, Oregon.
And although this is a sneaker channel, the video won't be focused on the fact that Nike and Adidas are in town. I really wanted to focus on the quality of life and compare it to where I was moving from.

    Just moved to Portland from The Bay Area in CA! Very different vibe, it’s definitely a city every one needs to experience. We moved out here on a whim. Felt like we belonged here after visiting, and moved. Hearing about the violence does make you believe you are in an unsafe place. BUT- I have family in Stockton,CA- Modesto,CA and for 6 years I live in Fresno,CA. In other words - as you get older you recognize that there are people in need, on drugs, and straight up angry- everywhere. Most of these folks are white. For a POC my view is DONT START NO STUFF, WONT BE NO STUFF. Lol, I feel you on the being brown aspect. I definitely felt looked at and treated some type of way coming here. I am NOT In CA anymore. Today this random white dude stopped in the middle of the street and stared at me for a good 50 seconds. Super random hasn’t happened to me here yet- that was unsettling- especially because you can’t throw down here without getting arrested. YES, if you fight here, every party involved goes to jail. Stupidest shit ever. Anyways. Portland is cool. Still discovering everything , I stay in South waterfront, it’s a whole different vibe, I don’t see homeless people out here at all, I think it’s because there is a hospital and several retirement communities they can’t be here ? ICE is down the street , that’s interesting lmao. If you need a homie to kick it with, my husband and I are down !

    Couldn’t have said it better. The problems in Portland exist around the world. I’ve seen homeless people and junkies everywhere that I’ve lived. They may be more frequent here but it’s nothing new. And if you’re able to look past those issues, it’s a great city with a lot to offer. And most definitely. I’m not too far from the waterfront. Would love to meet more newbies in Portland

    I’m moving to Portland in a couple weeks. I kind of just went out on a whim and decided to make the move without visiting. I did however visit a few weeks ago to apartment hunt and I agree that everyone was very friendly and willing to help. And yes there are a ton of homeless but I’m currently in LA where there is also a lot of homeless. My biggest fear is the gloom and lack of diversity. But I think if I put myself out there I’ll find the right set of people to hang out with. Your video helped relieve some anxiety I’ve had with the move so thank you :)

  • @MouseOnFeet

    @MouseOnFeet

    2 жыл бұрын

    Wow Lexi! That is amazing that you’re moving here on a whim. I think those spontaneous urges can usually lead us to great results. Also, coming from a big city like LA, you should do great out here. I’m coming from NY and I feel like that big city feel has prepared me for anything that Portland can throw my way. The rainy/gloomy days and lack of diversity are certainly something to get used to but you’re absolutely right. Just put yourself out there and ppl will attract themselves to you. It’ll be easy to make friends here and they’ll distract you from the gloominess. Wishing you all the best with the move and feel free to reach out if you ever need anything

    I’m in SF right now and thinking about moving to Portland. Do you plan on getting a car? Also I’m trying to figure out what the downtown/ office work culture is like, since I would likely be looking into tech companies. I’d be interested to know your thoughts if you have any on that. Last question :) but what actually made you want to move to Portland? Was it to leave NYC or did you feel a pull there?

  • @MouseOnFeet

    @MouseOnFeet

    2 жыл бұрын

    I think the culture will vary by company but overall, I don't believe the working lifestyle here is as traditional and rigid as it was back in New York. Not quite sure how it is in SF. I do want to get a car at some point down the line but it's so inexpensive taking transit that I may just wait it out as long as possible. Leaving New York was a huge part because I hated to see all my money go into rent (for such a small place) and Portland provided an answer to that with having a much lower cost of living. But I also visited Portland for a few days before making the decision so that I could really get a feel of the city and it won me over. Great food, friendly people, easy commutes and an opportunity to save money.

    I completely understand. That sounds very similar to my situation. I didn’t know anyone moving out here but if you’re pro-active and open to starting conversations, you’ll meet some great people. And the people in Portland are really friendly. But initially there may be some lonely days. There’s a great transit system that’s made it really easy for me to get around Portland thus far without a car. The lack of diversity is something I’m still battling with. I’m just not used to being the only one of my kind in a given area for so long but over time, you can meet more people like you (they’re here somewhere) and connect with them.

    I'm from upstate NY. I lived in the Bronx for about a yr also. I moved to Portland in 07. At first I loved it, only real draw back at first was the pizza. NY style is incredibly hard to find and when you do find it it's mediocre and super expensive. Now that im older, have kids and a wife. I've climbed the corporate ladder and wages here just haven't kept up with housing prices. Yes, a 1 bedroom apartment is affordable and by west coast standards even the homes are affordable....but it comes down to how much you can afford. Portland has some of the lowest inventories in the country which makes rent more expensive than it should be. Wages just don't match. Now let's say you manage to make good money as a high skill worker or whatever.....ok, now do a Google search for large companies in pdx. You're gonna see Nike, Intel, Columbia sportswear, and that's about it. There just aren't that many jobs here. Sure it's got a good economy, but it's not a diversified portfolio and few big corporations here that are needed to make enough money to afford a house here. Food is above average but COVID destroyed pdx. We specialized in higher end restaurants and foot trucks. Not a whole lot of true grab and go comfort food. All the real artists have left the city for cities with less COVID restrictions. The few that have remained just don't offer the same level of impressiveness as they once did. The local artisan phase is dying. Also Portland doesn't have soul food, Chinese food, or BBQ. You'll find restaurants that say they make it, but you will definitely be disappointed in these 3 specifically. Pizza here is awful but you will have an easier time finding that over Chinese, bbq, and soul food. I think it's just because Portland is largely white and health conscious. Beas chicken is good though.....chicken sandwich is dry, but bone in is great. The coast is pretty but unusable. I like the coast but to drive 1-2hrs to go to the beach and not be able to swim sucks. Seafood also isn't much of a thing surprisingly. Everything on the coast is mediocre, out dated, and same frozen crap you get in the city. Unless all you wanna do is hike and camp, it's boring af. There are a couple small mom and pop amusement parks, but it's basically like a small fair. Nothing impressive at all. Theme parks in the pnw just aren't a thing really. Out door activities are it. And those you absolutely need to drive too. Max won't take you to those. As a fellow east coaster the biggest draw back is family. After 15yrs Im done with the isolation and wanting to go back. When I moved here I figured "I can't just fly back to visit family". But reality is it's not affordable or realistic to pay for 4 people to fly often enough. You will miss family. Friends are hard to make here. Not because people are rude, but because people are introverted to a detriment. They're flaky and pretentious. You can walk around naked and no one would think you're weird at all, but if you have any views that lean to even the moderate right you will be ostracized.

I can see how someone from NY would think this is great, but as someone from here it's not great. It's obnoxious. Can't enjoy the great outdoor without passing lots of people on trails or driving through bumper to bumper traffic. The homeless situation is insane and if you need police assistance, GOOD LUCK! They flat out do not respond. Portland sucks now. I wish people would stop glamorizing it and drawing people in. 🙄 Oh and don't forget it is legal for homeless people to camp in any public property, I know so many people with bum camps right outside their front door. Needles littering the streets, property crime has sky rocketed and things have only gotten worse now that drugs are essentially legal to possess.

    Portlandia Welcome! Moved here 2 years ago from suburban Florida. While there is a lot to like about the city, I feel they get outweighed by the cons myself. I live 15 mins away in Beaverton so thankfully I don’t have to be immersed in it even though I’m in the city multiple times per week. I don’t know a single soul I’ve met who was born and raised here that thinks Portland has improved over time, quite the opposite. Typical with the lenient policies encouraged by a certain political demographic, tweakers are taking over downtown. I’ve had a bottle smashed against my car stopped at a red light and my window broken and items stolen while parked. I manage a fleet company and not a week goes by I don’t have a car stolen, a customer robbed of their car at gunpoint (mostly in southeast), a customer reporting vandalism and theft from their car or the catalytic converters and/ or wheels stolen off one of my vehicles. One of my locations has been broken into twice in a year. The district attorneys office doesn’t prosecute a lot of crimes, which castrates the police’s ability to arrest. Downtown streets are littered with human feces. Urine. Tents. Trash. Abandoned cars. A friends wife runs a daycare downtown and when they used to feel safe enough to walk their kids during recess, they had to scan their walk paths first for dirty needles left behind. Homeless camps on the outskirts, stolen and stripped cars boats and trailers galore. The lack of racial diversity is disappointing however everywhere you turn Portland seems to have the loudest voices for racial justice which is ironic to me. I find it amusing the comments from those who have moved from large metropolis areas like SF, LA, NYC… yeah it’s not bad if that’s what you’re used to.

    That’s definitely a big concern. I never went to school in Portland but I can imagine that they don’t offer the most diverse group of students. That being said, I’ve attending schools where I was one of the only black students and I think in some cases it can build personality and make you a champion for your culture.

    I’m a Portland resident for 21 years and planning to leave. In the last 4 years Portland has completely changed from the image it used to have. Crime is absolutely rampant. Just about every business and restraunt has a boarded up window from being robbed. Property crime is everywhere. Your car WILL get broken into at some point and car and bike theft is rampant with chop shops operating openly all over town. It’s happened twice to me now. Violent crime, carjackings are up and we had more murders in 2021 than the last 40 years. Drive-bys and turf shootouts happen every weekend now. Gang task forces were all disbanded during BLM and police response times are at around an hour - even after 20 min waits for 911. They do not respond to property crimes anymore. The force is down to about 1/3 normal numbers after a year of protests and they can’t even hire cops here. The DA doesn’t prosecute property or drug crimes. Portland had mild, long running gang problems but now they operate openly. Drug legalization has created a magnet for homeless and mentally ill on our streets everywhere. I call in at least one big homeless camp on fire under an overpass or interstate greenway a week now. Assaults from drug addicts and mentally ill are way up - many businesses have to deal with openly dangerous, armed homeless people defecating in doorways and assaulting staff. The famous restaurants and businesses are leaving and shuttering at an even faster rate in 2022 - not due to covid but because of the crime and a rash of new taxes passed this year. Tech companies are using covid to quietly close downtown offices and move. Schools are also some of the worst in the country. All of my friends pulled their kids out to private schools - check out any of the Portland Public School audits to read more - it’s horrific. Most people leave Portland when they have kids. Taxes are also increasing with new city income taxes on top of 9-10% state income tax. In short, if you lived in LA or New York, this probably seems fine. But we’re almost as bad as those places with only 600,000 residents.

    These are great points. Thank you for watching and for chiming in. The drug x homeless problem is huge here. No employees of any store should have to deal with the issues stemming from that and it sucks to see them have to be security here. I don’t have much to say about the police issues because that just sounds like how they respond to us in black neighborhoods. Definitely not a place I’d like to raise kids though. If you’re from a big city, it’s a good opportunity to come and live somewhere cheap and save up then move somewhere else when you’re financially ready or ready to start a family.

    @@MouseOnFeet Agree. That’s the saddest part - that it’s gone from a place I love to one all my friends say is no place to raise kids and moved away. I’ll be joining them soon as I plan on leaving in the next 3 months. I wish you the best, but I do not see Portland recovering for many years - if it does at all. It was a great run for my time, but I’m leaving. Good luck and be safe.

    I anticipate that you won't be living in Portland for very long, since you seem far too normal and sane. Once you get over the masquerade that the people put up, you'll see that the niceness is extremely shallow and your relationships will also be just as shallow. The bums and tweakers will eat away at you. If it's not the 5th time your car is broken into, it might be the knife attack you just barely escape from, the drug addict sexually pleasuring himself with a metal rod in the middle of the day in downtown, or just watching people shoot heroin on the street as you casually stroll by with your boo. There is definitely not a lot of black people in the whitest big city in America. You can find pockets of black owned business like Po'Shines in North Portland, Kenton neighborhood. The owner is GOOD people and his food is amazing. Good luck out there my guy, after living there my whole life I had to move away to be in a place where I would actually want to raise a family.
