Hey, I’m a POC who lives in Beaverton, OR. I moved here like 2 months ago from Cali to relocate my jobs for better pay. I’m a security officer I was making $16 an hour on average out in Cali, paying 1100 rent. However due to inflation most apartments were beginning to increase and start at 1400 in Cali as well. I transferred my job to make $21 I’m paying about 1400 rent. I’d definitely say the rent to pay ratio is better out here. Before you move out here by yourself consider looking into a job that pays at least $24 an hour if you have a car note. If you have no car note I’d say $21 but $19 an hour minimum. A lot of entry level warehouse jobs& security jobs are paying around this amount… & if you have some type of certification or degree that’s even better. There’s a lot of rain & sometimes snow but honestly I Prefer this weather over 100+ degrees of Cali weather. The biggest Con for me is that the bigger & more intriguing cities are so far away. I miss being in Cali where all the main attractions were only 2 - 4 hours away. The biggest Pro about Oregon is that it’s so peaceful and if you love nature, honey this is the place for you

I was an armed guard 25 years ago (98-02) and I was making $15 an hour BUT my boss was a jerk and was paying everyone as an independent contractor so I had to pay my own taxes. Also he had me working 12.5 hours a day for a while 7 days a week but he had me work one job site for 14 hours a day 5 days a week. The money was good but not the headaches.

I definitely appreciate the reviews from POC more so, just because I feel like I'm going to get an honest opinion. I'll be moving there in May after graduating. Unfortunately, there have been about seven new videos this year talking about how portland is terrible, etc etc., and hearing that can be a bit discouraging. Anyways, I'll be visiting end of March to do some apartment hunting. Thank you for this uplifting and honest video. Really appreciate it.

Hi Rachel, thanks for watching! I think Portland has a lot to offer but at the same time it does have some really bad negatives such as the homelessness issue. I can say for myself that’s an issue I don’t want to deal with for a long time. When you visit, be completely honest with yourself and assess if it’s a city you’d like to live in. Don’t forget that there’s so many cities in the world to choose from. You have plenty of options and while Portland would love to have you, I’m sure you’ll do great wherever you move.

The homeless problem definitely worsened since covid. There were about 10 camps around the city in 2019, now there are about 100! Shelter capacity dropped, services cut.... But.. the city is making huge investments in fixing the issue. A recent $45 million surplus is all going towards new shelters, a doubling of outreach workers, cleanup etc. And we passed metro wide a tax in 2019 that will build affordable housing and even pay homeless $20/ hr to help clean up the camps. Hope this all soon makes a difference. Anyway hope you're loving life here nonetheless, thanks for the video😊

Portland is cheap compared to other big cities but expensive compared to how it used to be - in 2010 I had a 2 bedroom apartment in NE Portland for $600 a month, that same apartment with no upgrades is now $1500. The lack of sales tax was definitely the big money saver there, when I moved back to New Orleans (also affordable compared to big cities but much more expensive than a decade ago) the sales tax hit hard, everything was so much more expensive.

Lived in Oregon from 2014-2022, moved to AZ but hoping to live in OR during the summers only. You got a lot right, hopefully by summer time, you will have went to the coast, hiked and gone to some of the rivers, I would add: Food: There's too many to name but you're off to a great start, I'd throw in Mama Chow's, Eem, Tropicale, Hat Yai, Chicken & Guns. Nightlife: Depending on your age, you may gravitate towards certain neighborhoods. One of my favorite spots in the last three years is called Jackie's, arena style sports bar that turns into a lounge with a dancefloor. Weather: Yeah it rains, it can also get pretty warm in the summer. If you can get passed the 9 months of grey, you'll be fine. Homelessness: Yeah it's a problem, a lot of screaming at night, loitering, if you move from out of state, change your license plates asap, they seem to be a target for break ins. Note on Black Barbers: Before I started cutting my own hair in 2020, I would go to Kingdom Kuts, before that I went to TES. I'd recommend using StyleSeat since a lot of black barbers tend to move around.

It depends on what industry you’re looking to get into. In most cases, there are opportunities but I would try to land a job here first. I hope you bring a lot of POC to Portland. That would be so nice. All the wonderful music, food, and great minds and friendships Portlanders are missing out on. Keep posting! I'm also glad you're not judgemental of the homeless. ❤️ I was a homeless addict for 11 years, and it was definitely a struggle. I tried for so many of those years to get clean. I tried everything under the sun. Rehabs, AA/NA, Suboxone/Naltrexone, even jail didn't help (obviously just makes people worse..there is no rehabilitation in our judicial system. I think they had a speaker come in for maybe 20 minutes one time. That's it. And there really isn't much help for the homeless either. They really need to revamp the system if they ever want change. Make rehabilitation #1 instead of punishment. I think they had they right idea with decriminalization, but they needed to go further. And I don't think they can, it needs to be in the jail and prison systems as well. 😔 They are only one city. But they could have better rehab programs or more buildings for the homeless. Being homeless was the most tiring thing I've ever had to go through. I had absolutely no energy. Whenever someone yells "get a job!" They have no clue. It literally sucks the life out of you. Thanks for the video. ❤️😊

There’s Black barbers but I’m talking about Black Barbershops with a culture. A place for Black people to chop it up. If you do find a Black barbershop here, it’s a minstrel show inside or they still have white barbers cutting in the next seat (no offense to them) but that’s no longer a Black shop

You had me feeling Portland for a minute but the homeless doing the smash-and-grab thing to people's cars just turned me off from even wanting to visit Portland, let alone actually relocating there. It's a dag on shame! smh

Shave your head bro, or keep it short and cut it yourself. There used to be several black barbers off MLK but since I've been shaving my head, I can't say. Also, the best thing about Portland is it's in Oregon. Spend time away from Portland. Explore Mt Hood, Crater Lake, the coast, the woods and everything in between. Since NY is one of the biggest cities in the world and this is the opposite, embrace what's here, while you're hear. I've met a lot of hunters and farmers and have learned a lot in my time here.

Shaving my head is looking like the only way to go honestly 😂 But yeah, there’s definitely some great elements outside of Portland

Black Barbershop in Portland: Barbershop Worldwide on Division St in Southeast Portland. Twan is the barber, he's the best in the city no question.

I've been here for 6 months. First 3 months my wife and I lived in the Sellwood Moreland area and now we live on the Vancouver Washington side. Outside of Portland city proper area there is limited diversity. Awkward stirs at blacks especially in the rural areas and driving the coastal areas to see the ocean sites. Homeless is a issue but not as bad as the subtle racism. Outside of the main Portland city, this is a red state.

@@hamzasinanaj9132 true but the beauty of the Pacific northwest is in the rural areas, so to really enjoy the natural beauty of the mountains and coastal you have to visit. Which in turn makes the experience uneasy. You cant spend all your time in Portland. We just lived 3 months in Eugene and now we are staying is Astoria and its more if the same. Traveling healthcare professionals so we are doing the whole state so I am speaking from a personal prospective.
