As a black man in nyc trying to move to Portland, I asked one of my friends from Portland why do you guys love hiking so much? He told me he didn’t get it as well at first too (he’s from Idaho) but when he visited “Crater Lake” he said it change him and he’s never ask why again and never will. So I guess it’s about the journey, health benefits, and what you potentially could be hiking towards that make it worth it. One thing is for sure, I now really want to visit crater lake.

I grew up on the Oregon Coast and moved to Portland in '99. How early Portland closes for the most part has been a struggle. When I visited NY and Toronto I was like, everything is available all the time! This is great! Most restaurants in PDX close at 9pm on weekdays which is a bummer if you want late, late? Late night eats past 10pm. The geographic beauty of the region will always be a draw for a lot of people. This Portlander doesn't have a Subaru but a Honda. I do have a dog....and a horse. I have Nike ACGs and Converse All Star (Bugs Bunny furry edition for his 80th bday), Cool vid! Blessed adventures to where your life takes you!

One of our biggest complaints (other than the junkies) is also how early so many restaurants close. Great and honest video! Queens born & raised, but lived in CT, NC & NJ. I visited Portland in 2021 and it was nice, but my group definitely felt like the only Black & Latine people there 😅 The homeless population was bigger than we thought & very vanilla, it was an experience. Thinking about a move to Portland next year, since it’s cheaper to live there than in L.A., Santa Monica or San Francisco. Any areas in Portland you recommend? Or to avoid? Downtown, Slabtown, etc?

Hey Delilah thank you so much for watching! There’s some cool areas right outside of downtown like the Pearl district. Great food and scene there. South East is a great area to live. But weird activity can happen anywhere in Portland

During the summer months, I would go to Cannon Beach and spend 2 weekends a month there at the Tolovano Inn. Just curious... What city do you think might be a better fit for you? I'm also considering a move to Portland but have resisted it for a few years due to some of the things you mentioned. I lived in SF / Oakland for 16 years until 2015 and still miss the diverse art scene and culture and feeling on the street that used to be there. Eventually it got so expensive that the concentration of culture/freaks/diversity eventually moved away and tons of established community centers and businesses went with clearing the way for the tech invasions. I've lived in a few places since then, but nothing really scratches the itch like it used to. Maybe I'm just getting a little older and a little jaded? Anyway, your videos were helpful. Hope you continue to be inspired where you are.

Your take on lack of enforcement is interesting and made me consider if the same is going on in my city, Philadelphia. We have a well known fentanyl/opioid area called Kensington where people pretty much are homeless and use drugs openly. They are majority white and from the suburbs of Philly. We already know about the racially motivated difference in how cocaine and crack sentencing went but it’s just blatant how hands off law enforcement is with the opioid epidemic

So no matter where you move to on the west. You won’t find that many blk ppl.. now let me back track real quick. If you would of been out there in Portland almost 15-20 years ago. When I was there. Nice video. I'm white but it still surprises me how white Oregon is, even in their "major city". Oregon looks very beautiful but I'm not outdoorsy, just like a nice view and being around that many white people would make me uncomfortable. I've never lived in a city that's even half white, let alone 90+%. I suppose it's good that the lack of diversity hasn't affected the food options though. Portland had way more nightlife before the pandemic so lots has changed. I disagree that crime is accepted because of skin color. And the comment about letting junkies on the bus was strange. How do they know who to not let on the bus? So someone looks like they have a drug addiction and the bus driver says not you. Interesting perception but some of it was weird. Saying black people do not exist out here is not true and bizarre but ok. All you have to do is look at the stats and it's already known there are more white people out here but that doesn't mean people of color don't exist here. Portland is not what it was before, right now, it's not the same city at all. We didn't use to have tents everywhere. It got out of hand during the pandemic and now we are struggling to get it back where it was. People do not like or trust the police because many of them cited or were friends with Proud boys and much of that thought of the police hasn't changed.

Thanks for watching Amanda. I’ve lived in a lot of big cities and I’m just calling it as I see it. In any city with a greater population of Black people, the things going on in Portland wouldn’t be possible because since their existence Police are around to terrorize Blacks and drag us back to the plantation. The system only works for them to disappear in Portland bc of the population. And as wrong as it sounds, you can tell what these junkies look like. If you’re in New York riding an MTA bus, the driver is not letting a junkie on. It’s for the safety of the paying customers. I was talking about Black people. Not “people of color”. We’re not treated the same and are not the same. Obviously you can find Black people here but when you go to a real city, it’s much more prevalent that you find Black people. Lastly, it must be great to not trust the police because of something like that. Black people don’t trust police because they kill us. And we’ll never have the ability to just have them moved out of our neighborhoods

I relocated for a job. I am a Director of Development for a nonprofit that serves the homeless. If you are from a place where African Americans are progressive thinking and have strong black organizations that serve the community this is not Portland. As a person from the East Coast, specifically the Washington DC Metro area, you will find community but the point of making a place your home is to find BELONGING. It is shocking to me how black folk don't value education and understand it as a way to gain some momentum in this area. This place is very prejudiced, I do the work here so I know. It is not cheaper to live (cheaper than Caili/New York) gas is expensive, food is overpriced, housing well that depends on what you are looking for. Being single and young might work but as a Balck family or couple, give some thought to what you want your children to know about who they are: they will not learn it in this school system. I DO NOT GET WHY FOLK LIKE THE FOOD HERE...I am a Southerner and these folk cannot make soul food Mexican food and Chinese food...There is no Mambu Sauce. I am missing intellectually stimulating conversations with folk who look like me. Looking forward to making my way back home at the end of this year.

Lack of African American in the Pacific northwest. Not cool. Maybe if you spend all your time in the downtown Portland area is fine but anyplace outside of it is majority white 90% +. I stayed in Oregon for 6 months from Portland Sellwood area all the way down to Eugene oregon. No blacks. Even stayed in Vancouver Washington for awhile and still no blacks. This is fine for the blacks who prefer being the token black but if you have a comfort level in seeing those that look like you, then the Pacific northwest is not for you. Stay clear of Oregon and Washington state unless you are strictly staying within the large city area of Portland oregon and Seattle Washington because the suburbs and rural areas will let you know your unwelcomed. So the trips to the costal beach areas and mountains will prove to be not so happy adventures.
