You keep educating those young folks on gardening and life Granny. When I was young I wish I'd taken more advantage of elders knowledge. If this kid had someone with him to teach what he's going to figure out for his self eventually. Sure could help make his latter years less painful. I swear my back wouldn't hurt half of what it does if I hadn't been just like this and wanting to do everything alone.

One of the biggest problems is that the states have again decided to control citizens, even on their own property. And we ALL let them! When tiny homes became popular, the states raced to make legislation that forced land owners to have homes with about 1200 or more sq ft., minimum. That should NEVER have been allowed to pass. And it was solely for taxation purposes. They'd rather have trashy looking large homes then well kept tiny homes. (Both parties allowed this, btw.) SO many more people could be living their dream if we had stopped them.

Buddy, I was born and raised pretty much off the grid, my family had been in the holler, since 1790. We are Cherokee/Creek Indian runaways from the removal west and hid and Scotts Irish mountain men. When I came home from the Marines after 12 years and 6 deployments as a Rifleman I was tired of the world and just wanted left alone so I went to the deepest part of the mountain, closest neighbor was 45 minutes away and I spent a year in a Tipi while I built my animal barns, then my cabin. The first year was rough because I had no food saved and my chickens, hogs, and cattle were to young to butcher and hunting was a rough year in that area. So I suggest for the first 7 months get alot of canned food, because you burn out quick and you need those calories. I spent 4 years like that and wouldn't change a thing, just you are gonna be starting out with chick's, pigs, and no garden coming in until at least August for your tomatoes to be ripe, but I always planted an acre garden, alot of potatoes and cabbage, carrots, and tomatoes, get good at canning and I would love to teach you or help you with building your own bow, arrows, teach you how to brain tan the hides, and show you how to run a trap line and bow to skin and stretch the hides to sell to the fur buyers. I also gathered morel mushrooms, ginseng, bloodroot and golden rod and rakes to sell to buyers. There are alot of ways to make money, just remember when ever you think there is nothing left to do, there is always plenty left to do, cut fire wood, check your animals and improve their living area. Key is to stay productive

You could do this in north Minnesota and Canada border close to Duluth. I went on a 5 day canoeing trip with 5 guys and we had to canoe through the lakes to and camp on the islands or portages is what they call it. Its land owned by the Boy scouts called Northern Tier. In winter you can take huskies to sled. The middle of the lakes is so clean we were drinking out of it. Im originally from NJ so i been camping and hiking in the Appalachia mountains from maine down to the Carolinas. You need this experience to be able to make it 5 days. Ww would fish and brought some food and supplies but everything had to fit on your back and in two canoes. One day we went 20 miles and a thunderstorm came and rain on us 20 mins before we made it to land. It sketchy being in middle of hug lake when there lightning. But it was fun. We basically lived like this on each island but ours was temporary for each night. Id do it again. I live in Houston TX now and i did same trip in Northern New Mexico. I did that with my 5 person group 2 weeks before we went to Minnesota. Best summer after HS graduation ever had.

The kid from that book also died 2 miles from a road/bridge that could have brought him to medical assistance. Idk how someone can "survive" in one small area, a school bus, and not walk 2 miles around the site. He's the perfect example of reading all the books and learning everything from books isn't as great as years of experience learning from someone that knows his/her craft of wilderness survival. But that kid not walking 2 miles in a circle around his bus was a dumb move from basic long term wilderness survival. Ya can't fix stupid 🤣

Once you get to the point where you’re growing your own crops and hunting your own food make sure to cook it all very well. And from time to time do a parasite detox, especially if you’ll be eating fresh fish. It’s not fun doing a parasite detox but you’d be surprised how many people have parasites and no idea they do.

@@thebusinesswoman23 this true to a degree... but the balance of these organisms in our gut are different from parasites per se. Parasites take, and give nothing in return. Yet flora and fauna live within us that are "Symbiotic". We can actually get seriously ill without them in our system. A good example of this would be acommon illness that happens when we abuse certain antibiotics, resulting in C-Diff. Which is what you get. A person of lesser health can die from the dehydration and loss of essential nutrients generally absorbed in the intestinal tract. I have been in healthcare since 1996, and I can tell just by the smell of a patient's shit, if they have it. Which is a normal trait of seasoned healthcare workers. Same with lower GI bleeds.
