Why I'm (kinda) Quitting Art Shows - Cottonwood Art Festival

Ойын-сауық

Traveling to create my artwork & exhibit in art festivals, like the Cottonwood Art Festival in this video, has become increasingly difficult for me emotionally. I absolutely love to travel and traveling solo is one of my greatest joys. But that doesn't mean that it's easy, especially now having a baby at home. In this video I travel to Richardson, TX, a nice suburb of Dallas to exhibit at the Cottonwood Art Festival.
My name is Evan Reinheimer, I am a full time artist. I travel the world using a traditional kite to lift my camera into the sky to create unique aerial photographs. This technique is called "Kite Aerial Photography." I exhibit & sell my artwork at art festivals across the USA.

That was so sweet! You are such a good father! My husband also works far away from home for many years and he's using every opportunity to get back home as soon as possible. I think man that can tear up from love overflow is a real man!

what a beautiful family. And Evan you have some great self-awareness and in my opinion, are making wise decisions. Children change our lives; that's why we have them! My 23 year old daughter just graduated college and will still her "dream job" next month. One of my fondest memories is the one year that I exhibited at the Smithsonian Craft Show. Though sales were good, the meaningful moment for me is the memory of walking through the hotel hall on the way to our room. Lily was only 15 months old. (Adopted from China at 13 month and attended her first show at 14 months) and she was sitting on my shoulders as we approached our room. She looked up and said something that sounded like "light". It was one of her first words and I'm sure anyone here with kids knows that amazing feeling. To this day she still tells us that one of the most helpful things in her life was being forced to communicate with both customers in my booth and students when I was teaching in my studio. She learned at a very early age to answer the phone with a very grown-up voice.... "This is Ricky Frank Enamels. How can I help you?" And the flip side to "art shows with kids" was the time I flew to Las Vegas to do a show by myself, leaving my wife and daughter at home alone. Of course my mother in law was hospitalized that weekend and my wife was caught trying to perform the difficult task of being mother to both our daughter and her mother. We had little help and had not planned in advance. Congrats to your new life and give yourself time to enjoy Milo!

@@EvanReinheimer at one of the first shows we did with my daughter (we also dragged along a babysitter), I asked a good friend "Does it get better/easier?" The father of two older boys who had done shows for many years, his answer to me was...It just gets different! And he was right.

Watching your video has given me more confidence in doing art shows. So I've applied for two small local art shows for the first time. Hopefully I get in. I've been doing photography for over 30 years, first time trying to sell fine art prints. Thanks again.

It’s been a great ride with you leading in so many ways, but I get it and your right. The time will fly by faster than you can imagine so grab it while you can. We will still be here watching Milo grow up in our world when he’s ready.

I have friends that had little ones. When the babies were at the point of sleeping through the night, they would all travel together as a family to the shows. The children got so used to being at the shows, and even helped when they were older. I mean who can say no to an adorable 1st grader selling her dad`s pottery (just for a like a half hour)?

I struggle greatly with this. My grandkids are growing so fast. Im not in a good mood when i have to be away doing shows for any length of time. Its artist friends like yourself that help me get over it. The conversations with everyone, helps me tremendously to get over the hurt and sometimes guilt i have while away. Great video Evan.

Perfectly said, James! These sometimes small interactions we have while on the road are one of the main things that keep me together while traveling away from my family. I seriously did not expect it to be this emotionally difficult, but I’m glad I realized it before it’s too late to do something about it. Thank you for putting that all in to words…I hope to see you soon!

🥹 Aww... Lots of great insights here. Growing up, we always had Mondays as “family days” (my Dad’s day off). We’d often drive out to Montauk and hit every playground on the way out there😆. But, I do remember feeling like we were always waiting to spend time with him the rest of the time since he worked long hours (most holidays, too) running his small business and would often be home very late. I never thought of it that way about art shows, we really do have a lot more time flexibility. Though I’m not quite there yet 👶, it is helpful to hear your perspective on doing this job while being a parent. Thank you for being so vulnerable & honest in your videos 😁
