Why I'm a Baptist

In this video I share three reasons why I am a Baptist Christian: credobaptism, congregationalism, and the separation of church and state.
Truth Unites is a mixture of apologetics and theology, with an irenic focus.
Gavin Ortlund (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary) serves as senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Ojai.

@@davidjanbaz7728 sorry I missed this, David, if any Cath ever calls you that, point them to the Cath “Decree on Ecumenicism” (Unitatis redintegratio), as Caths, they’re obliged to give it assent, it doesn’t call our separated Christian brethren “heretics.” It says Caths should acknowledge that non-Cath-Christians, through faith in Christ, have salvific grace too. It isn’t the 17th Century anymore. If someone is being saved by grace through faith in Christ, all the sincere debates ought to begin from an acknowledgement of that imo.

A person must be “baptized” to be saved, but it has nothing to do with water. The proof is found below. Old Covenant Baptism vs. New Covenant Baptism (water vs. Spirit) Water baptism was a part of the Old Covenant system of ritual washing. The Old Covenant priests had to wash before beginning their service in the temple. (Ex. 30:17-30) When Christ was water baptized by His cousin John in the Jordan River, He was under the Old Covenant system. He also only ate certain foods, and wore certain clothes, as prescribed by the 613 Old Covenant laws. Christ was water baptized by John and then the Holy Spirit came from heaven. (Acts 10:38) The order is reversed in the New Covenant. A person receives the Holy Spirit upon conversion, and then believers often declare their conversion to their friends and family through a water baptism ceremony. Which baptism makes you a member of Christ’s Church? The New Covenant conversion process is described below. (Born-again) Eph 1:12 That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. Eph 1:13 In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, (A person must “hear” the Gospel, and “believe” the Gospel, and will then be “sealed” with the Holy Spirit.) Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. (See Jer. 31:34 for the New Covenant promise, and 1 John 2:27 for the fulfillment) ============ Which baptism is a part of the salvation process, based on what the Bible says? What did Peter say below? Acts 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Acts 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. Based on Luke 3:16, and John 1:33, and Acts 1:5, and Acts 11:15-16, the most important thing about the word "baptize" in the New Testament has nothing to do with water. The Holy Spirit is the master teacher promised to New Covenant believers in Jeremiah 31:34, and John 14:26, and is found fulfilled in Ephesians 1:13, and 1 John 2:27. Unfortunately, many modern Christians see water/ every time they read the word "baptize" in the text. Based on the above, what is the one baptism of our faith found in the passage below? How many times is the word "Spirit" found in the passage, and how many times is the word "water" found in the passage? Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, (See 1 Cor. 12:13) “baptize” KJV Mat_3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: Mar_1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. Mar 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. (Water or Holy Spirit?, See Eph. 1-13.) Luk_3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire: Joh_1:26 John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not; Joh_1:33 And I knew him not: but he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost. Act 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence. Act 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning. Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 1Co_1:17 For Christ sent me not to baptize, but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. (See Eph. 4:1-5) Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Eph 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in one hope of your calling; Eph 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, Heb 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. (Old Covenant ----> New Covenant) .

If you want to learn more about Church tradition, you should learn about the early church. They didn't keep Baptist traditions on baptism. They taught things the Baptist Church rejects. This is why I don't hold to their interpretation of scripture. It deviates historically from Church normative on baptism teaching.

As someone who was raised Anglican but is now Baptist, I would love a longer video on Baptist church history. The only issue is that Baptists ignore parts of the bible. I agree with most of it but not the part about being saved. Baptists believe that all you have to believe in Jesus and you are automatically saved which is not true. After one is saved works follow out of obligation to our commitment to Christ, but not to achieve salvation. it can be compared to marriage. Hmm, I thought the terms charismatic and Baptist were kind of antithetical to each other. Baptist seems to have a wider swathe than I know, but I thought Baptists were pretty firmly cessationists. I've heard ex Baptists talk about when miracles really started to happen in their lives and speaking in tongues happened, totally w/out them seeking it since they were taught it was of the devil. Then they tried to share those experiences w/ other Baptists and were practically shunned.

You should also check out the Church history that was in place before the Baptist Church. The early Church so believed in baptismal regeneration and the concept of baptism washing away sins. This is what the Church taught on this subject. Baptism washing sins away by Infusion with God's grace obtained on the cross is the normative understanding of baptism. Not what the Baptist Church says about it later. This is what lead me to reject what the Baptist Church teaches. I cannot easily ignore that this wasn't what the Christians believed in the early Church.

Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Based on Luke 3:16, and John 1:33, and Acts 11:15-16, the most important thing about the word "baptize" in the New Testament has nothing to do with water. The Holy Spirit is the master teacher promised to New Covenant believers in Jeremiah 31:34, and John 14:26, and is found fulfilled in Ephesians 1:13, and 1 John 2:27. Unfortunately, many modern Christians see water when they read the word "baptize" in the text. (See Eph. 4:1-5) Heb 9:10 Which stood only in meats and drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation. (Old Covenant ----> New Covenant) How many people have been saved by the Old Covenant water baptism of John the Baptist? Hebrews 9:10 Old Covenant vs. New Covenant (CSB) They are physical regulations and only deal with food, drink, and various washings imposed until the time of the new order. we are baptized in both water and spirit. There are multiple kinds of baptism in the age of grace established by Paul which is for us. The water baptism is not essential for our salvation. What’s important is the idea that our past selves die, and we take on a new life like Christs death and resurrection.

Hi, Dr. Ortlund. I have a question related to Baptists specifically and catholicity. I am certainly persuaded that the Reformers were performing a renewal/recovery movement within the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church, rather than starting a "new" thing. The Magisterial Reformed, Lutheran, and Anglican seem to fit this view. However, I struggle to see how Baptists can lay claim to this tradition given their unique ecclesiology/sacramentology, as well as their general rejection of historic liturgical forms of worship. I am a Baptist myself, but I struggle to see how we can view ourselves as possessing a continuity with church history in the same sense as an Anglican or Lutheran, for example, given these significant differences. Many of your videos on Protestantism seem to work better for the other Protestant traditions than for ours. Do you have any thoughts on this or resources to point me towards? Thanks for your work!

  • @truthseeker5489

I'm unsure if this relates to your comment, but I will put it out there anyway. As a non-Christian, I am puzzled by the concept of a renewal/recovery of the one holy, catholic, and apostolic Church. No matter how you slice it, a large portion of protestants seem to agree with the premise that the Church as established by Christ fell apart not long after the death of the last Apostle, and therefore, the "true gospel" needed "restoration." Why is this significant? The undeniable implication of this historical view is that what the Son of God Himself established did not survive, but what was established by some other non-Incarnate man did. In the case of Mormons, it is Joseph Smith, who they consider a prophet. For Seventh-Day Adventists, it is Ellen G. White. For other protestants, it's one of the "reformers" of the 16th century. To me, this means that which was restored by mere men has managed to last at least 500 years, while that which was established by God in the Flesh, Jesus Christ, hardly made it past the end of the first century before it became corrupt. How could mere men succeed, and the God-man got it all wrong? Does not this view necessarily elevate the creature above the Creator?

I'm less convinced about strict secularisation especially in the way that non-believers argue it. After all, I would say even talking about inalienable rights would imply Christian thinking and at least some denomination's views creeping into government. That would be interesting. I've only heard one take from protestants, and that's largely explained by demons. I'm not Catholic either, but that no longer satisfies me. I don't know what to think. There have been some Mary sightings by individual people in terrible distress that always made me wonder. One was in a book, "Michelle Remembers". This was a girl raised in a Satanic cult from a toddler, when her cultist mother gave her up to be groomed in horrific rituals to raise the devil. She somehow always believed in God, though the cult was careful to shelter her from any knowledge of God. In a satanic ritual, they raised the devil out of a fire. Mary appeared to her, as the kind and loving mother she never had. I've never known what to make of that. I believe her story. I've had that book a few times, and read it at least twice. Everyone always wants to borrow it, then they lend it to someone else. I never get them back, but just as well. Read it a few times and wouldn't want to read it again I don't think. The end is wonderful and redemptive, but the details are beyond horrifying.

Saw a video from Africa about Mary appearing on the front church wall : it looked totally faked and just a fuzzy Statue image of a woman projected on the wall from a window by the sun. That was taped from inside the church during a service! Catholics are investigating but I have doubts about this as it seems only to be Mary who keeps appearing to Roman Catholics / Orthodox.

Catholic here. Adults and youth coming into the Catholic Church are baptized at Easter Vigil, which is an amazing experience (and long - often 3-4 hr service). Depending on the church the method of baptism will differ, but my Catholic Church did full immersion baptisms this Easter. If you’re baptized as an infant, you won’t remember it of course, but the sacrament is valid no matter your age. Children then have Confirmation at the age of reason where they profess their faith and are blessed by the Bishop - a memorable experience in itself. So it’s a different experience, but no less special/important/memorable.

I'm thankful for this straight-forward video. Of the three points you identify, as a member of the Evangelical Free Church, the issue of congregationalism is the one that I continue mulling over. On one hand, there is good evidence in the NT for elected officials within the Church and congregations carrying out discipline. On the other hand, there is a strong unity between congregations as organized clusters of church (IE: The church of Rome) and quality control over them (apostles/apostolic men). As such, the concept of a tiny "independent church" that starts as an isolated group of believers electing its own officials without the blessing of neighboring churches seems to open the door for all kinds of problems today. Do you have any thoughts on this? Is pastor of "random church A" as equally valid as confirmed pastor of "denominational church B"? You could escalate this up a level in hierarchy to evaluate denominations themselves.
