Why I love the "emptiness" of Generation Zero

If I remember correctly the dev’s wanted to instill a sense of being late. What I mean is: have you stumbled upon a military camp and seen dead soldiers and robots? Notice how blood is fresh and how the robots are on fire? It’s meant to make you feel like you just missed the fight. The chance to save the people. You were late to all of theses things. Even the invasion. Like if you had gotten there faster you could’ve saved them. And then that draws in the loneliness.

I pretty much exclusively play solo, I'm at the point where I know the game so well I play on guerilla by myself to make it a challenge. Better loot drop chances as well (on guerilla, not solo). I love the atmosphere of playing alone, it can feel so intense at times, I just finished a fight earlier today where I fought 4 tanks, three harvesters, 16 hunters and a dozen runners, burned through 3000 rounds of 7.62 AP, that was an intense one solo lol.

interesting video, as someone who is from Sweden, finding out that there was a game that actually took place in my country felt so refreshing. At the start, I loved that empty feeling it had (despite the extreme amount of copy and paste assets), but now it's a bit sad since with recent updates of the map. More buildings get destroyed or either locked up, and it's the same for everyone. So the continuity and context for the main story now is very messy for new players.

I am very much wanting to visit Sweden after playing GZ! To be honest the landscape is incredibly similar to my boyhood rural home in the US South. The game has affected me viscerally because of a few things... I was born in 1970, so in the game year of 1989 I was...19. Every. Single. Thing in this game takes me 32 years into my past in a very realistic way! Even the robots, lol, because I write science fiction. I've had scads of robots like these sprinting through my mind since I was 12. But what is a totally completely life-sim for me is the way the land looks as I travel through it. I hiked miles and miles in the forests around my home in the daytime and night, and I can't help but smile when I see the moon shining through the trees, their branches waving in the breeze, and the sounds all around me as I travel alone. The realism really transports me. Another thing I find that I never knew I liked so much is the Swedish minimalist lifestyle. I say minimalist only as compared to American excess, but I am very attracted to the sort of Ikea environment in the homes. I know it's a game and necessarily not as lush as real life, but I get the idea that the...practicality...of the way things are in the game is fairly realistic. And it's nice. And I'll throw in that the music and sound effects are perfect. The songs that play from the boom boxes are actually better than what I heard back then ha! I must say I envy the Scandinavian cultures, Sweden in particular, and I'm thankful that something like a game can help me see it in my mind's eye. As an introvert I completely agree with Casual Panic's video. Give me single player if it's as nice as Generation Zero's.

This game gives me the old STALKER vibe, where you stopped dead where you heard a gunshot off in the distance, the feeling of loneliness is amazing, plotting your travels through undergrowth and carefully creeping across fields or from building to building while the enemy just creepily chatters among its self. There's a little bit of a controversy about that though, unfortunately. The devs apparently live in the same town as him, and have repeatedly denied any deliberate inspiration despite the rather blatant similarities. He's on record as not even wanting royalties, but he's seriously pissed off with the devs for what does look like unashamed plagiarism. Hell of a way to treat him. I've been playing gen 0 for months now, but after reading about all that, it made me view the game and the devs very differently, unfortunately.

@@Vel_D I'd buy that normally... But then I read an article about it that references his opinion on the matter- it's on pcgamer. Most relevant bit is this: “Avalanche knows who I am. We live in the same town. The game director of the GZ follows me on Twitter. I’ve even met them and briefly worked with them, and not once did they mention they were working on a game set in the Swedish countryside in the late 1980s, featuring giant robots.” The artist doesn't care that the devs didn't reference his work as a potential influence, what he is pissed off about is that the devs are openly denying ANY knowledge of his work despite that appearing to be a blatant lie. It just seems like the devs have decided that any admission of influence would be tantamount to them risking a lawsuit, so they're doubling down on their ridiculous claim that an artist who they've worked with, that they follow on twitter, and that they've actually met, who is famous for his 1980's swedish retro-futurist work featuring giant robots and moody landscapes, didn't influence their art direction on a game in a 1980s Swedish retro-futurist setting featuring giant robots and moody landscapes in the slightest. I mean, believe what you like, but sometimes you just get a little teeny tiny feeling that something might be smelling a bit fishy. 🤣

You put into words exactly why I love this game. Also, being a swede, the original swedish voice actors are really good, at least the most important ones. It gives me chills. That together with the emptiness of swedish homes that were all somehow prepared for an invasion, something that we all know was a special time of swedish history during the cold war. Especially coming from an indie developer, the sound detail is amazing. Also, the fact that, and some spoiler warnings here for new players, that the machines have weaknesses that when destroyed affect their behaviour in some way.

My pal and me love strolling through the woods, seeing sun rays, fog, moon light etc. The contrast between defending a house against 10 digs, 6 hunters and 3 super big machines (no idea what their names are), with constant shell shocking, machine guns destroying the windows and explosions everywhere - and then strolling through the woods or an "empty" city full of with dead robots and empty houses is soooo good. I really hope this game get's a bigger fan base and the developers stay with the project - it's an unpolished gem, but it shines already so much: the animations of the machines, the armor falling off them, they sprinting at you and scare the hell out of you, it's so epic.

Just started playing this a few weeks ago - now going 50 hours in game, and I have been loving it so far. I know this video is a year old - but your definition and coverage of an 'Empty World Nostalgia' definitely encompasses Generation Zero. I find great bliss simply taking in the worlds like this created by devs, along with other RPG/ARPG/FPS games. I can sort of call it Swedish Fallout 76 - the bugs by launch, the bread-crumbs like experience with voicemails, logs, and diaries, the base-building-assualt-defense gameplay, the crafting and looting, and the exploration aspect. This one however, is less god-rays and the obnoxious 'it just works' thing from Fallout. Generation Zero is an amazing experience. When I played it, minor bugs happened, but ran swimmingly 98% of the time, the graphics are gorgeous, combat is decently paced and enjoyable, and the ambience - reverbs of gunshots, the roaring of machines, and the background noise of the environment, topping it off with you roaming the beautiful Swedish countriside - is definitely a solid single player 'Empty World' experience for you to explore and leave no stone unturned to digest the world the Devs intended for you to take in. I play with my brother and nephew time to time, but this game just hits different going solo with this. I just wish the game shows a bit more life, maybe a town hub of survivors at least, go the Far Cry 3 route of riding boats, hang gliders or providing more movement and creative combat options. But Generation Zero is fine, if not better, than how it first was, and the very recent update even gives you a machine companion who can accompany you - carrying loot, and outfitted with weapons and armor to fight with you! Thanks for spotlighting this underrated game, and I definitely recommend this game if you just want to turn your mind off, travel and indulge the Swedish countryside and fight against machines that come your way.

I just picked up Generation Zero for the first time about a month ago. While I can't give a comprehensive review or any guides or anything like that, I can give a base review of all that I've seen so far. This game rewards creative play. You play how *you* want to play. Are you a speedy medic, zipping across the battlefield to aid your allies? Are you a lone pathfinder, always surveying the future battleground and formulating strategies? The trapper, constantly leading your enemy? A sniper, a heavy gunner, a tech warrior, whatever. Anything you can think of in this game, it will reward you for it. My friends and I have taken to tactically clearing rooms since it's just so fun. Sound design is perfect, movement is fluid, visuals are *stunning*. One of my favourite things to do in this game are clear bunkers as an organized strike team. I would open a door while my sharpshooter friend stays a few paces back. It's extremely satisfying to take on engagements how you want to. Then there's the environment itself. Every single location tells a story, no matter how small. Tiny fishing docks often have cars with fishing poles in them, as well as tool/tackle boxes. Houses that were homes to military have *plenty* of ammunition and often times have firearms. Hell, I even just today as I'm writing this came across a very small shack on the beach. Two cars were parked, there was a radio, some weights, and other items you might expect someone to have when having a workout day at the beach. This is one of the few games that I have to give a 10/10 on atmosphere. The world really feels lived in, and it leaves little to the imagination of what life was like before your trip.

And as you pointed out, the immersive sound that echoes so naturally through the world. And the main theme is such a powerful piece of timeless, classic gaming music! However, Avalanche not recognizing Simon Stålenhag as THE source of inspiration for the game is just weird. For people who followed his work here in Sweden, it's quite obvious!

I also enjoy trying to enter towns/outpots quietly, or going in shooting first (both are fun... although sneaking is obviously more tense), Anyway, suffice to say this game is definitely my kind of thing.

I’ve been playing the game since early 2019 and the game has came along way from the old inventory system in the HUD to the funny glitch is that you see to the broken ones that you use to the bosses to the new type of robot it’s honestly One of the first games that you can actually see the progression of what the deaths have done and you can tell they’re very invested when I first started to play it it reminded me of dying light you explore this big world you start from nothing and then you dominate everything it’s honestly a good game to come back to

Bro I played this game up the other day for the first time and it was so fun, exploring the houses, on high alert from the government, finding new weapons with notes with stories from those who were there maybe only hours before you. You know enough to get a grasp but not enough to understand what's going on, such a fun game

the way i see it, the robots were pretty effective at what they do and see why the Swedish military wanted to adopt them, while theres battle scenes, its not as messy or as destroyed as you would expect, from runners being fast and agile to catch up with their targets they probably took care of anyone who wasn't armed or as lucky to make it, so it adds onto the emptiness pretty well ^^

This video has helped a lot with some questions I have had for the game to decide whether I wanted it.. Its currently on sale in the steam store and I remember hearing some good mentioning with it but I was afraid that the solo side was gonna be different.. I do like the feeling of loneliness in a way (not in the sense I like the feeling of loneliness itself but more of how it makes a game feel), it gives you an open world to explore and makes you as the player feel like you are the one who matters (I guess).. Another thing about the game I like is how it looks in a way to be an open world Terminator like game set in the late 80's and by no means is that meant to be a swing at Gen Zero, its actually meant to be the best compliment I can give because I mean, apparently from what I have heard a lot of the Terminator games feel like rip-offs to the movies.. Gen Zero definitely hits home from the looks and I cant wait to play it..

As someone that did play Multiplayer maps in the 90s alone and was exploring every Map without the annoying other People or Bots (also no Internet on Consoles.), i absolutely get this here of course. I Love Generation Zero for the similar reasons. I am glad, that it is the way it is and while playing it with People i know is a lot of fun, playing it alone makes it really shine for me. I am an Observer. Sometimes engaging Robots. But i just love... being there. I guess i also do Roleplaystuff in my head. Since i am from northern Germany, i have been to Sweden and its neighbors quite a lot. I love it over there. Moreover i was born in November 1989, so that is sometimes nice to see articles in Newspapers in this game from that time :D

I recently got Generation Zero and definitely agree that the empty world feeling is present and executed really well. You have vast sections of beautifuk countryside and then in the corner of your eye you will catch a red glow between the trees or a familiar beeping sound will echo from the distance. Then all of a sudden you are on guard. The whole game feels like a frustrating game of catch up as it feels like you are playing the Rock Grimes role having just arrived in Sweden after humanity has just fought its final battle. You arrive at a town to find people have just evacuated or arrive at a bunker to find freshly burning robots and destroyed base defences. Like you are working your way to the front lines of a war that is way out in the distance. The additional of a few friendly voices in your ear via the few NPCS still around makes for a nice touch.

Great game, I am a solo player and have enjoyed this game and still play it regularly. It's funny to remember when I first started and how I struggled to survive, would only travel off the road and along shorelines to avoid contact to make it to the next group of buildings to explore and gather resources. I love the solitary nature of this game and I tend to like most games that are like that.

When I first played Gen 0 back in like 2021 (I think), it was pure horror. The machines growled like mechanical beasts as they walked right past where I hid. I'll always treasure the memory of cowering within the back of a truck or in a house as a patrol of military hunters made their way past accompanied by the menacing thuds of the incredibly lethal quadraped Harvester, or hiding behind a large rock in a small area shaded by some trees while a tank angrily fires its heavy cannons into the woods in an attempt kill me. It wasn't a battle to survive, it was a *struggle* to survive. Nowadays I find the game a but easy and treat fighting tanks less like a desperate struggle and more like fighting a large demon from Doom. I still love Gen 0 but I don't think I'll be able to feel that sense of terror again.

I finally bought this this past November and I loved the game. Wound up putting a few hundred hours into it. I let the negative reviews keep me off of it for a while, and then one day I finally noticed it on sale for dirt cheap and took a chance on it. And man was I wrong to let the reviews sway me so hard on a game that I was so interested in. I would have happily paid full price for it, and on sale it was an absolute steal. Everybody has their own taste in games, and that's fine. But I really do think this game got an unfair shake from a lot of people. The intention of this game was never meant to be a Skyrim where you run around and talk to a bunch of people. So I think the people that criticize this game for feeling empty have their heads up their asses. I also think theres actually plenty of character in the game regardless. From all the tapes and notes that you find to all the different scenarios you run across in the set pieces (houses turned into makeshift military hqs, weird suicide rituals in the forest, families that died together in their barricaded houses etc), I think there's plenty of story and character to be found in the game. You just have to be willing to use your imagination a bit vs having everything handed to you in a cutscene. And lets face it, as you said, the sound design and atmosphere in this game are top notch. And its just lots of fun and really satisfying to move through the woods and find different ways of battling big scary machines.

GZ is...difficult to describe. In story and in feel, it is best described as a 'Lovecraftian Singularity Scenario'. Saberhagen's work also springs to mind though. There are plenty of dead bodies to be found in the game, but you quickly realize that it's not nearly enough to account for the entire populace. Only a small fraction. This becomes more and more apparent the further along you go, reaching larger population centers, military bases, etc., with half-eaten meals simply abandoned at the table. The amazing sound design only serves to further impress upon you that towering demigods and lower demons of steel stalk the land, searching for any who might yet live. It's eerie. "What HAPPENED to everyone?!" Then you find out...

I do not have the PC equipment powerful enough to possibly play this game, so my only recourse for the past year has been watching others play GZ here on youtube & a lot of it has been fun. However, I am one of those gamers that have played older 3D FPS & when it comes to singleplayer campaigns, I have always felt that aforementioned loneliness of a lone warrior as said in the video, whether it was the Quake series or the first Serious Sam or Soldier of Fortune or Descent, etc etc. But the best first game that really made me feel alone in the world was Half-Life 1998, which included the far-away backdrop illusion of large outdoor spaces. As far as the emptiness & wide-open spaces, the first game I had experienced that in was in Battlezone II: Combat Commander, because of the huge maps that they sometimes were in, including community-made maps that even extended the spaces even wider in them. As computer get better & better, these illusory outdoor spaces in them will get bigger & bigger. Games such as Generation Zero or the latest Serious Sams already have huge mmporg-like spaces, but it's gonna get huger, because we like to make the digital world get closer & closer to real life. VR & holography are just a few stepping stones away to becoming a common normal utility somewhere in the future.

Just got the game a few days ago - I love it! I'm creeping around so slowly and very seriously with such little ammo and supplies. There's something that just clicks with me in this game - as a kid I used to explore the woods around my home with a pellet gun and crappy survival knife. I found a small abandoned oil drilling site from the 50's, abandoned houses and shacks and even a cool 20ft waterfall that would freeze a pillar of ice and take me weeks to chip away and finally break... This game feels like those days. I've gotten to the farm past the church, but haven't cleared it yet. It feels like a zombie game, but I'm so glad it's got killer robots instead! Hearing that sound (like the wake up computer in Alien) echoing in the forest creeps me out. 😬👍

  • @Darkmattermonkey77

What I actually enjoy is that, “yes, it’s a big open/empty world”. But it’s not. You travel by bike (which is dangerous because you can’t shoot or heal while riding) or by foot. There’s always a small fear of traveling the vast map. You can and do run into groups of robots all over and some huge battles between different giant robots that you would rather stay clear of, playing alone. So it’s not really big and empty, it’s huge and potentially scary. You never know (until that motion tracker pops up) when you’re heading into random danger.

Gen Zero wasn't even on my radar but then I started reading the bad reviews and they reminded me of the bad reviews when Fallout 76 first came out. People were complaining that without NPCs it was boring but I loved it. I love games where I can just freely roam and scavenge and have a few encounters with enemies. I also thought the sound design was amazing! I love the fact that they audio logs are in the correct language with subtitles. At first I was a little annoyed that when I would come back to the world I would have to travel so far between safe houses but then I realized that it forced me to find new areas and that made the game even better. Just when I thought this game can't get any better, IT DID! I keep finding surprises whether it's a bunker hidden in the country side or a debris field and each time I say out loud....This game is fantastic! I agree with your review 100%. Keep up the good work.

Been playing it for a couple of months, and I completely agree- early-and-mid game travel is tedious until you unlock enough safe houses and the speed perks (I never touch the bikes because they're so buggy). It's definitely a game designed for coop, which is a shame because the atmosphere better suits single players, and the lack of npcs really does hurt the story. You just don't care about anything in the game after a while, as it's all just random documents and audio logs that never tell you enough to not disregard. Shame. Mechanically and atmospherically it's a fun game, but I'm done with waiting around for the devs to do something coherent with the story.

THE FIRST CHAPTER OF THE GAME WHEN YOU COME OUT THE HOUSE AND YOU SEE THE ROBOTIC DOG AND THE DEAD COP WAS SUCH AN AMAZING BEGINNING FOR A GAME!!! Now I'm a new player and I didn't know what happened before I hear a lot of people saying that the game wasn't promoted and it was unfinished... I LOVE THIS GAME I'VE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH IT. Then again I didn't play when it first came out.. but let me tell you this game is simply TERRIFYING IN AN AMAZING WAY!! I simply love everything about it now I have not watched the video yet I have it paused... I don't know what you're going to say about the video but I'm going to subscribe to your channel just cuz you mentioned the game that I so love... The whole point of this was to say I think, (FOR A SMALL GROUP OF PROGRAMMERS) to come up with something so good, with only a handful of people? It's really saying something about the commitment of the people that made the game... Thank you for doing this video.....
