I definitely enjoyed the game more before the DLCs and Updates that just filled the world too much. I loved that empty and threatening feeling with all the noises echoing around. I'd always keep a look out for anything could just appear out nowhere and cause a fight that would overwhelm me. Now it's just constant explosions and hurry. No time to soak in things. Never enough quite to listen to the wind and leaves rumbling. Never enough pause to feel relieved after a big encounter. I'm sad the devs took this much attention to the complaints from people who this game was not made for. But sales, i guess, is always the bigger argument.

I'd have to disagree with your views on the game being punished by "entitled" people. As an early player, the game was definitely a buggy, and somewhat unfinished mess. The main attraction was the robots, and despite the little detailed variety between the prototype, military and FNIX classes, they were largely the same, meaning it felt like fighting the same six enemies all the time. There were quests sure, but they were literally all pieces of writing for you to pick up, go somewhere and pick up something else. Props to Avalanche for turning the game around though and sticking with it, this would have been a great disappointment if it hadn't been for the dedication of both devs and community alike. Trust me when I say that you'd have no idea just how much better the game has become in such a short time span unless you were there from the beginning, I do not miss those days of bugs.

I love this game's vibe. They really nailed the era and I dug the contrast between running around with little more than a pistol trying to skirt around and take down overwhelming murder machines to eventually Rambo'ing dozens of robots with thousands of bullets that I crafted myself. ...only to then run into even bigger threats that hit that much harder. Truly a teenage coming-of-age apocalypse action movie in game form.

You didn’t even have to go into rainbows lore. Rainbows lore went out the window when this game was announced to be multiplayer only. No story mode = No lore. You guys strike me as a “my first system was the 360” type. This game was from the very beginning a cash grab. This game has no soul and no love was put into it. Ubisoft just needed to fully fund something that would keep them from going bankrupt because people were getting tired of the constant reskin of assassins creed. This is just a toxic addiction game to get kids to steal their parents credit cards and buy a new skin yay! I don’t consider this game a rainbow six game. It’s just a fun shooter that Ubisoft made and threw R6 on the title. They should’ve just named it Siege. it is not canon.

the way i see it, the robots were pretty effective at what they do and see why the Swedish military wanted to adopt them, while theres battle scenes, its not as messy or as destroyed as you would expect, from runners being fast and agile to catch up with their targets they probably took care of anyone who wasn't armed or as lucky to make it, so it adds onto the emptiness pretty well ^^

just discovered the game and now it's in my top10 of all time. it can be really hard playing solo and gathering the loot for upgrades can be pain, for example i tried to fight a lvl 4 rival for that big loot and another lvl 3 rival joined our battle on top of 20 hunters and many runners. it ended up being a huge warzone, i ran out of medkits and had no materials to craft new ones so i had to play super safe and loot me back to a state where i even can start a fight against these big ones again. never had such an experience in a game.

Okay so good review but there was a little thing you missed: the over saturation of dlc, don't get me wrong I absolutely love the game and its soundtrack is amazing, but I have to admit it's a bit of a problem. Having to have to pay for simple things like making your pet a different color, or motorbikes, yep just motorbikes. weapons, base defenses, all locked behind paywalls, also when looking at steam there isn't people wanting a game to be more than it is its just people with actual complaints like the already stated ridiculous dlc, asking the devs to fix the game instead of pumping out overpriced dlc, people thinking it isn't worth the 24.99 (usd) price point. Now I'm not saying you're a liar there is definitely going to be reviews like you said that ask more than the game is. Still these kinds of problems are worth talking about instead of just ignoring them. (Also, you pay six bucks for motorbikes. I'm serious.)

2 years later and I agree with pretty much everything you said. I quit playing for a few seasons and came back to a different game and a ping 4x higher. For every change and map rework section I like there are dozens I completely despise, it's a completely different game with a completely different play style, look and feel. Hate all the new unrealistic, nonsensical, maze buildings with no symmetry that would never actually be built in ranked. Most of the "pro league" competitive balance changes are autistic and just sad

This is probably the most immersive open world game I have ever played. The absolute loneliness, the darkness of the night, the mysterious events, the locations, the intelligent combat against ruthless robots, it's all wonderful. Video games don't need tiring NPCs and constant boring cinematics for lazy players. This is a video game.

I recently got Generation Zero and definitely agree that the empty world feeling is present and executed really well. You have vast sections of beautifuk countryside and then in the corner of your eye you will catch a red glow between the trees or a familiar beeping sound will echo from the distance. Then all of a sudden you are on guard. The whole game feels like a frustrating game of catch up as it feels like you are playing the Rock Grimes role having just arrived in Sweden after humanity has just fought its final battle. You arrive at a town to find people have just evacuated or arrive at a bunker to find freshly burning robots and destroyed base defences. Like you are working your way to the front lines of a war that is way out in the distance. The additional of a few friendly voices in your ear via the few NPCS still around makes for a nice touch.

I get I'm bit late to the party but Imma share my vibe of the game. I like all that you said in the vid CP but there's another underlining feeling that you nearly feel. But now considering the GZ starts with other humans this feeling became more recognizable. The moment the only npc that could help you in a fight (the military corporal, and the pacifist girl) stays in that base you are the only one they depend on getting answers for what's going on. So if you die... Well nobody else might be able to collect all the evidence of what actually happened. After all all those documents, recordings, latter's, have been taken by you. Nobody else will gather it because you have all of it. If you die there isn't really a chance of those npc humans to understand what happens because they have small chance of surviving against a hunter mech. This is my vibe I get that strengthens every time I'm about to die in game. That if I die then I might doom anyone I leave behind. Because if I can't kill a tank in an ambush without it lasting 20 seconds... Then no normal human (npc) should be able... Unless you've got 40 people with rocket launchers...

Started playing this game with a buddy of mine. I had already known pretty much everything you need to now about the machines, being what types and the classes. We had enough trouble taking out two prototype tanks, so of course my buddy wants to go to the airbase. He gets there ahead of me and says there are two military class tanks. I think this is bad enough, but he was wrong. It was not just two military class tanks in fact, but just one. Out of my view. I've only seen three prototypes so far, so you know? WHY NOT MAKE THE FOURTH TANK THAT I SEE ABOUT 2 HOURS AFTER STARTING THE GAME BE A APOCALYPSE CLASS. There it was, just standing in the field. What he had mistaken for military. We then proceded to find over 8 FNIX hunters, a FNIX harvester, two military tanks, and one FNIX tank. Not to mention the plethora of dogs and drones.

God, you are so right about the tone of the game. A little goofyness was appreciated every now and again but it just gets way out of hand. Comparing it to what the game was in 2017 or so when I started playing, its easy to forget how different it feels. Just hop into one of the situations maps, which are mostly unchanged from release, and its easy to see what happened. R6 before was mostly serious and grounded with just a touch of camp. That has been flipped on its head. I've found myself going back to Counter-Strike because of it.

Just started playing this a few weeks ago - now going 50 hours in game, and I have been loving it so far. I know this video is a year old - but your definition and coverage of an 'Empty World Nostalgia' definitely encompasses Generation Zero. I find great bliss simply taking in the worlds like this created by devs, along with other RPG/ARPG/FPS games. I can sort of call it Swedish Fallout 76 - the bugs by launch, the bread-crumbs like experience with voicemails, logs, and diaries, the base-building-assualt-defense gameplay, the crafting and looting, and the exploration aspect. This one however, is less god-rays and the obnoxious 'it just works' thing from Fallout. Generation Zero is an amazing experience. When I played it, minor bugs happened, but ran swimmingly 98% of the time, the graphics are gorgeous, combat is decently paced and enjoyable, and the ambience - reverbs of gunshots, the roaring of machines, and the background noise of the environment, topping it off with you roaming the beautiful Swedish countriside - is definitely a solid single player 'Empty World' experience for you to explore and leave no stone unturned to digest the world the Devs intended for you to take in. I play with my brother and nephew time to time, but this game just hits different going solo with this. I just wish the game shows a bit more life, maybe a town hub of survivors at least, go the Far Cry 3 route of riding boats, hang gliders or providing more movement and creative combat options. But Generation Zero is fine, if not better, than how it first was, and the very recent update even gives you a machine companion who can accompany you - carrying loot, and outfitted with weapons and armor to fight with you! Thanks for spotlighting this underrated game, and I definitely recommend this game if you just want to turn your mind off, travel and indulge the Swedish countryside and fight against machines that come your way.

As someone that did play Multiplayer maps in the 90s alone and was exploring every Map without the annoying other People or Bots (also no Internet on Consoles.), i absolutely get this here of course. I Love Generation Zero for the similar reasons. I am glad, that it is the way it is and while playing it with People i know is a lot of fun, playing it alone makes it really shine for me. I am an Observer. Sometimes engaging Robots. But i just love... being there. I guess i also do Roleplaystuff in my head. Since i am from northern Germany, i have been to Sweden and its neighbors quite a lot. I love it over there. Moreover i was born in November 1989, so that is sometimes nice to see articles in Newspapers in this game from that time :D

Hey folks! Duffy here - I just wanted to add that while I know that this video seems to hate on Atomic Heart more than show any love for it, I think it's important to still show respect to the dev team for what they achieved. The game looks gorgeous and the combat is stupid fun. But I still see more and more not-so-subtle hints (that I didn't even address) at how much the game's beginning story mirrors most of Bioshock Infinite's premise. But let us know what you think. How could the game have branched out in it's own way to change my mind?

I do not have the PC equipment powerful enough to possibly play this game, so my only recourse for the past year has been watching others play GZ here on youtube & a lot of it has been fun. However, I am one of those gamers that have played older 3D FPS & when it comes to singleplayer campaigns, I have always felt that aforementioned loneliness of a lone warrior as said in the video, whether it was the Quake series or the first Serious Sam or Soldier of Fortune or Descent, etc etc. But the best first game that really made me feel alone in the world was Half-Life 1998, which included the far-away backdrop illusion of large outdoor spaces. As far as the emptiness & wide-open spaces, the first game I had experienced that in was in Battlezone II: Combat Commander, because of the huge maps that they sometimes were in, including community-made maps that even extended the spaces even wider in them. As computer get better & better, these illusory outdoor spaces in them will get bigger & bigger. Games such as Generation Zero or the latest Serious Sams already have huge mmporg-like spaces, but it's gonna get huger, because we like to make the digital world get closer & closer to real life. VR & holography are just a few stepping stones away to becoming a common normal utility somewhere in the future.
