Why I love Landscape Photography in the Rain?

For most people rain is a good excuse to stay indoors and watch TV but rainy conditions really can be some of the very best for landscape photography particularly during the Spring and Summer seasons. In this video I explore a small section of woodland on the Isle of Man to showcase why I enjoy shooting in the rain and why I feel more landscape photography should consider embracing wet, damp and miserable conditions to their advantage. Thanks very much for watching and I'll see you again next time :-)

    It has to be the portrait for me for a few reasons: as Nigel says, portrait follows the lines of the waterfall, so it feels right, 2-the sky at the top left gives a bit more context, and 3- I don't particularly like the blob of foam at the bottom right of the landscape shop. First image is tremendous, you have inspired me to get some rain gear and go explore water falls in the Ottawa, Canada region. Thanks!

    Love the first image James. With just a touch of editing (dodging, "Orton" effect) you can have a photographic "Constable" there. Portrait view on the second composition. It leads your eye up rather than down, which the first of the two images does, and to me it's the preferred psychology. Don[t let Simon B. know where your old gnarly tree is. He'll invade your space when politics lets him. An enjoyable 20 minutes (I paused 3 times to enjoy your images).

    Welcome back, James! Landscapers’ “embrace the rain” akin to street photographers’ “respect the puddle”. After your “wave” disaster, I thought you’d be averse to exposing your gear (and self) to H2O. 30 shower caps for gear but not wearing one yourself out there?😀 Clear message about location scouting in detail, and thorough comp explanation👍. Prefer portrait image of second location - landscape orientation has circular foam in shot that reminds me of soap or inorganic goop that shouldn’t be there (polutant). Would have been instructive to see the separate pre-blended images as well as final combined image. Hope all is well. Cheers!

    I was absolutely soaked by the end of this shoot. The rain was so much worse than forecast! That little round bit of foam was so annoying, I suspect you are right that it might have something to do with a water pollutant potentially which is a little sad. Seems that even in the most seemingly pristine pockets of nature, they are not so pristine as we think! Thanks for the feedback and suggestions 👌 Cheers Paul

    I like the shower caps in the rain but often want my lens hood on but can’t with my filters. Kase are introducing a magnetic lens hood, (in the next couple of weeks apparently) made of rubber that works in lots of positions for wide angle and standard lenses. I’m not sure what sizes they are going to introduce but using 82mm magnetic filters and there is a video on KZread showing that size. Lovely images by the way.

    I like the the first image vertical and the second image horizontal -- though, personally, I'd be tempted to crop off the far right portion to eliminate the round white foam mass. But that's just me. Know of a good light waterproof shell? I could surely stuff one in my pack for such eventualities. And, just curious, I was surprised to see you using a ball head instead of a gear head. I love the Bogen gear head which replaced my ancient and heavy Bogen 3047 three-way head.

    My first thought was 'Why is he wearing a down jacket on a wet day?' I do a lot of solo gorge walking. We have a lot of them around here, not just 'The Devil's Pulpit'. You get these places to yourself, no-one has photographed them (unlike The Devil's Pulpit) which also means it can be bloody sketchy at times as well. The one thing I'd disagree with you with is as gorges are deeper than they are wide you need the light to gain contrast. I find that they are better the day after the rain, the waterflow has stabilized so you're not likely to get a sudden surge of water and your gear is not getting soaked through. I'd also say that during a dry patch its worth doing a reccy and removing the worst of the distracting debris, like the long branch that draws your eye away from the waterfall. There's no guarantee however that nature won't have substituted it with something else by the time of the follow up visit though :-)

  • @JamesBrewphoto

    @JamesBrewphoto

    3 жыл бұрын

    Haha valid! The weather forecast was only forecasting light drizzle which us on the IOM will often go out in T-shirts in 😂 Rain ended up being much heavier! True about light in gorges - only downside to that is huge dyanmic range which means heavy exposure bracketing. Even on the day I shot the difference between the dark gorge cliff walls and the brightest highlights was absolutey huge. I'm a bit fan of exploring these little hidden areas! Thanks for watching Iain 👍
