This video was great and brilliant tips! I feel a bit dense for not thinking that birds like dippers won't care about rain! I guess its just in my head rain = less light = more of a juggle. Got dippers nearby at a place that is busy at weekends, so I just need an immensely wet weekend! My only thing that makes me laugh, you are very knowledgeable about being in the rain... but you've worn a down jacket that's got soaked! :D

Hi. Glad you enjoyed it. Weirdly, sometimes it can be quite bright when it's raining. There are two main types of cloud that bring rain, one is where there is very dense low level cloud (nimbostratus) and when this happens it will be dark. But there is another type where there is thin cloud at all levels up to the higher atmosphere (cumulonimbus) and because the cloud isn't so thick, the light can be quite bright. Also with both types of cloud you can get some nice changes to the light where there is a gap in the clouds shining light through, but the rain is still falling. I didn't want to go into clouds in the video as it's a bit too nerdy, but give it a go and you'll see what I mean. Oh and yeah, I'm just happy to get wet and change clothes later. There's a couple of problems with waterproof clothes - one is that they often make crinkle noises and they other is that they are often bright colours - both of which unnecessarily draw attention from the wildlife. But waterproof clothes are probably better for your health. :)

Great tips there. Use and trust your zebras and how good that Sony sensor is Scott, and I say that as someone who spends a couple of months each year photographing dippers in generally dark, wooded locations.

I am not one for commenting on peoples videos as I have to be light on the computer to write it doesn’t always get it right and sometimes it can be quite embarrassing when you press the button it changes stuff. Having said that I am definitely taking the time out to write this as I watch a lot of your videos and I just like you to know that I’ve been watching KZread photography videos for quite a few years now and I find your is the most educated and straightforward videos I have ever watched about photography I think it’s why are you put stuff across and explain it’s fantastic and some of your editing tips about sharpening and stuff like that are the best I’ve seen so thank you very much for your time and I will be following you closely and try and comment more often and if there’s any mistakes you’ll just have to understand it’s predictive text me if it was me it would be absolutely full of mistakes pen to paper is not my forte thank you very much for all your time much appreciated. ❤

Scott, I followed a link you supplied in one of your replies to a comment I made in another of your videos and, as usual, I am not disappointed. I didn't know about the hot shoe protection aspect which is a very good tip to remember. A possible workaround for anyone who hasn't got a hot shoe cover with them is to use some gaffer tape as a temporary cover. It's not a bad idea to have a few spare strips of it a camera bag. Don't need to have the whole roll just a few strips wrapped around something like a pencil or pen. I love the dipper images too and really should make more of an effort to get out when its raining. Thanks again Scott for another great video.

And have just come across your video on photographing in the rain 🌧 and I have just watched your Landscape photographing Back Tor which I have just recently been to, doing a sun 🌞 rise which should of been 75% cloud cover, but has normal it was just blue sky no cloud at all, so will have to keep going back.

Hi Andrew. Thanks for watching. I often find the weather forecasts at this time of year can be really wrong. I’m up in the Cairngorms at the moment doing some wildlife photography, but I’m desperate to get up into the mountains for some landscapes. Every day the forecast gives out fog and cloud, yet all I’m getting is blue skies. It must only be us photographers who complain about good weather. 😂

Late to the party as usual but really enjoying your channel - lots of info you share you are the first person I've heard mention it. With regards to the plastic hotshoe cover - I've had several people over the years stop me to ask where I got it, one lady thought I'd perhaps made it myself. Held on to mine for years, I didn't get a new one with my new d7500. Anyway, thanks for sharing these vids, very informative.

Another good video, you always provide valuable content with great images. I am fortunate enough to own a couple of OMD-S OM1 bodies and a selection of Olympus/OMD-S lenses and Olympus flashguns, all of which are, essentially, completely weatherproof. I have no issue going out in the pouring rain with my gear - I no longer need rain covers. I just keep a good quality micro fibre cloth in my pocket to wipe my view finders. The lens hoods keep the rain off the front element of my lenses. I do remove my Meike extension tubes, though. They are not weather sealed and I have been unable to find any extension tubes that are.

Cheers Pete. Yes, that's a really exciting feature of the OM-1 and I'm glad to see a manufacturer has put so much effort into it. Maybe the others will follow suit. I saw some of the tests that Olympus did and the hot shoe cover was always on. So I suspect that rain in the hot shoe could still play havoc and its always worth having the hot shoe cover on when you don't use the flash. I doubt you'll find any extension tubes that are weather resistant because they're normally made of quite cheap plastics with no gaskets - but they work remarkably well regardless. I occasionally use my Meike extension tubes on my 90mm macro, just to get me a little bit closer than 1:1. If you want to carry on using the extension tubes in the rain though, there are a couple of rain covers out there that are designed to be used with a flash. I've used a few of these over the years, but the ones from JJC were probably the best. Thanks for watching.

To anyone watching this video. I used to not care much about my clothing getting wet and used to only carry a change of clothes as well and still do as I love photographing in the rain more than anything, but spending long periods of time out there can be dangerous. I recommend wearing waterproof boots to protect your feet as I stepped in some nasty puddle and ended up getting a fungal infection on my toe that lasted for months. It spread to both toenails on my feet and had to get them surgically removed. Hike safely and clip your nails. Wear the right footwear! I wouldn't want anyone to experience this as I did. Great video!! Love the tips.

40 years ago I spent a year in on a geological survey in New Guinea, and the boots were constantly wet from many river crossings and sampling in streams. My toes have never really recovered. Fungus allways flares up again in the tropics.

same here, I do astrophotography and I have budget gear, none of them have weather sealing but i still use them to shoot for a whole night outside and during the cold season I often find a layer of ice on the whole camera body and lens/telescope, did that about 50 times now and never had the smallest issue

Very helpful tips, especially with our fickle British weather. I keep a camera/lens 'all in one' rain cover, itself stored in a small rainproof bag, attached to my bag by a carabiner/snap hook. It's always to hand then, when the weather forecast turns out to be wrong!

Thank your for the nice and interesting video and the good tips. I am not a wildlife photographer but a landscape and macro photographer. The longest lense which I normally use is just 100 mm. A rainy day in a forest, when the trees carry foliage and when everything is wet, is so beautiful and the colours are so intense. Instead of a rain cover to protect my camera, I bought myself a cubic bubble level which can be plugged in to the hot shoe and I glued a thin sheet of plexiglass onto this bubble level (so the bubble level is diverted as a holding of the plexiglas). With proper dimensions, this kind of umbrella protects against the rain and I can see and operate all knobs and buttons even if the camera is extremely close to the ground. This construction is not useful in portrait orientation but perfect in landscape orientation.

I have an olympus em-1 mk iii so i do not need a rain cover, the hood prevents water getting on the front element and i simply wipe off standing water with a tea towel as a precaution.

Really great video, immediately subscribed. Photos in harsh conditions in general are way, way too rare in my opinion. I actually find it much easier to get a great shot in bad conditions, probably because such photos are so rare and therefore there is less "competition" and it's easier to create something beautiful and different. I have to add, there are a couple of brands that really don't need any protection in bad weather whatsoever; Olympus and Pentax. I have never ever heard of an weather-sealed Olympus or Pentax camera or lens fail because of weather. People have literally washed off salty water, sand and mud off those cameras under a hose (it is crazy, but you can find those kinds of videos on the internet). I do wipe my gear when I get home, but with other brands I'd use a raincover 100%.

Hi Damian. Thank you. Yorkshire is fantastic for birding - I spend a lot of time there. It's probably my second favourite English county for birds after Norfolk. Here's a few sites for you. Bempton Cliffs in the spring/summer for sea birds. I've made a few videos from there before, but this one will give you an idea of what you can see: kzread.info/dash/bejne/mpaZxLqTdtPVqMo.html. Spurn Point in spring and autumn for the migrating birds. Around Bramham park - very near to you - is a great place for red kites and kestrels. Some of the coastal harbours like Bridlington and Scarborough are great for wading birds. And there are lots of nature reserves along the Humber and Ouse rivers that have great mixtures of birds.

Hi Scott, great video as usual. But aside from the rain talk, those were some stellar shots of the dipper! I was surprised to see the shutter speeds being under 1/800 and sometimes even down to 1/400. I don’t have a strong tripod so I always shoot handheld with my telephoto lens so I disnt know you could get such sharp photos at that speed. I wanted to ask whether I was right to guess that those shots were on a tripod?

Hi K C. No, in this case they were hand held. I often use a tripod or Platypod max, but in this case I wanted to get as low as possible to be level with the water on the river. With my hand flat on the ground, and my lens resting on my hand I could keep the camera really steady. My next video is about tripods and in one of the sections I show how I use it at ground level. Hi, im kinda new to photography as a whole and i was wondering why he used f/9 for the first picture at 1:27 . Is it to make sure the whole bird is in focus or the rock and the bird, or to make less light maybe?

Am surprised you have overlooked " Gloves " Especially when there is a windchill I've worn 3 pairs of Glove on occasion ... and it's still not enough to keep my hands warms . . at times i have to remove them to operate the screen . Especially in Winter time ..

I think that one is a personal preference. I don't often use gloves, but my hands don't tend to get that cold. I also think you need to be careful with gloves - they could be another source of transferring rain water to your camera. Interesting point though.
