Seasiders1953 There are plenty of people who were born and bred---and passed their tests---in the UK who don't know how to indicate on roundabouts. Of course, the occasional changes to the instructions in The Highway Code don't help.

they're quite simple really, but I'm still amazed by the people who think they can stay in the outside lane all the way around and leave on the forth exit! Then start waving their fist at you!! The only advise I'd give is to show the examiner that you're aware of the traffic around you (use your mirrors a lot) and especially the traffic that's waiting to come onto the roundabout. Make it obvious you've got an eye on the entry points and you're aware of the potential hazard. (Big fail area). Good luck George, I'm sure you'll be fine. Look at some of the people who've passed.....you can't be as bad as them can you?

michael sharp technically you can do that! I don’t think there’s anything in the Highway Code preventing you from staying in the outside lane in a technical sense, it’s just bad etiquette.

  • @spinningnumbers

if you do it on your test you will fail and more than likely there will be a roundabout on your driving test route. There are highway code rules regarding roundabouts that you'll need to know. Part of the test is negotiating the proper lane when approaching the roundabout so that you go onto the roundabout in the proper lane depending on whether you're turning left, going forward or turning right. Get it wrong and you will fail your driving test. Taking your test won't come down to etiquette. You better get it right.

British roundabouts always reminds my of a passage from one of Douglas Adams books: “He had extracted himself from the Cambridge one-way system by the usual method, which involved going round and round it faster and faster until he achieved a sort of escape velocity and flew off at a tangent in a random direction, which he was now trying to identify and correct for.”

When circling a roundabout, KEEP RIGHT, until the exit immediately before the one you need, then move over to the left. Also, use your direction indicators to show other road users your intention.

  • @Cheezsoup

    @Cheezsoup

    6 жыл бұрын

@ dopiaza2006 Spiral roundabouts are sometimes called Gyratories. Basically they are roundabouts that have lanes on them, which of these lanes you take depends on where you want to exit the roundabout. These lanes spiral out from the middle of the roundabout. So even if you started as far right as you could by the time you get to the third or fourth exit your lane would now be totally left, and without changing lanes (dodgy if the roundabout is at all busy) you have to leave the roundabout (and potentialy drive the wrong way untill you can SAFELY get back ontoi the proper route). See pic :- d2f0ora2gkri0g.cloudfront.net/live226906_spiraldiagram.jpg note how the lane you would be in "spirals" out from the centre Here is a KZread video of how to drive around them. kzread.info/dash/bejne/hIKlpdVwgZfYdJM.html

There's usually no problem on roundabouts when there's just locals using them. The problem is that some of them (the roundabouts, not the locals!) have unusual approaches, lane configurations, and exits. Locals know this, but strangers can get confused. I can count three such roundabouts on the same road within one mile where I live. Some people also drive far too quickly on roundabouts and get upset when other drivers try to filter in. That defeats the whole purpose of roundabouts, which is to improve traffic flow. I have occasionally been "hooted" on roundabouts for driving at what was obviously perceived as being too low a speed. Simple solution, use a little courtesy on roundabouts. If you're a Londoner, look up "courtesy" in the dictionary.

I drove a manual when I was a teenager in the 90s. It's not hard at all to drive. I thought it was fun. They're also not all automatics. Manual transmissions probably equal five percent of all vehicles. However, back in the 80s and 90s, the number was probably closer to 30-40% of all vehicles. They've become less common over the years.

If you want to have some real excitement or heart stopping moments, set your satnav to fastest route whilst in countryside areas. It will take you down the narrowest roads and lanes you will ever see, locals coming at you at 50 mph or more with nowhere to go but the ditch. One for the bucket list that's for sure! . Also some of our roundabouts do need traffic lights as you will take your life in your hands trying to get onto one during rush hour and then there's the pot holes! Nicest place I have driven recently was North Wales last September (2017) Very well kept. In contrast somewhere like the Cotswolds ( which you would think with all the income would keep it's roads in good condition) were some of the worst I have driven on . Cities and towns in UK are no go now for driving unless you have to, but we still have some wonderful drives through what's left of the spaces between .

My only concern with circling the roundabout is that, if you look at the videos of bad driving, a large percentage include those who think anyone in the nearside lane MUST be leaving at the next turn and overtake on the outside and cut accross. Stupid assumption but you need to keep a sharp eye out for these idiots.

Anyone in the left hand lane SHOULD be leaving at the next exit. Anyone coming around the roundabout has right of way so has the right to "cut across". The "idiots" are those who pull out onto the roundabout when they should give way.

Not so. I can quite correctly take the inside lane at a 4 junction roundabout and then take the 2nd exit i.e. straight ahead. I am talking about people in the outside lane of the entering road who parallel someone on the inside line and assume they are going to take a particular turnoff. They may, or may not.

If you like roundabouts and you're in Herts again take a trip to Hemel Hempstead (M1 J8), and take a spin round "The Magic Roundabout" (you-tube it). In short, it's a big roundabout which you can travel round in either direction, because at each entry/exit there in a mini-roundabout (six in total). Just treat the whole thing as six separate junctions and you'll be fine.

Right hand lane (signaling right) to go round a round about. Indicate left and move left the exit before the one you want. If that had been busy when you went round again it would have caused problems. Left lane is for first exit (signal left) and second/straight on (no signal until your at first exit)

I'm amazed that you managed to drive that far without coming across any "temporary" traffic lights which spring up everywhere like weeds. Also, our great "round-a-bouts are slowly getting destroyed by the addition of traffic lights, (which usually operate 24/7,) because so many drivers these days don't know how to use round-a-bouts correctly.

I like your remark about what happens if you miss your exit from a roundabout. I've done it more than once over my driving life. Even once with a 40 foot articulated rig. The only time it makes sense to put traffic lights on a roundabout is at motorway/A road interchanges where you would end up with traffic queued up for miles on the motorway during rush hour because the traffic on the A road wouldn't give traffic coming off the motorway a chance to move.

On a mini-roundabout, indicate like a normal junction but give way to the right. On a normal roundabout, the rules are a bit more difficult:*If your exit is to the left, indicate left before you enter the roundabout, stick to the outside lane and indicate left again when leaving.*If your exit is straight ahead, DON'T indicate before you enter the roundabout, stick to the outside lane and INDICATE left when leaving.*If your exit is to the right, indicate right before you enter the roundabout, stick to the INSIDE lane, then INDICATE left and MOVE to the OUTSIDE lane before your exit, then indicate left again when you exit.Roundabouts require focus and correct knowledge to use. Please respect that.

I'm a PCV Instructor here in England. (rule 223 of the Highway Code say's, Give way to buses pulling out from Bus Stops) just thought I'd add that for everyone's benefit.......tongue in cheek. I recognised that main road, the A505 with the sneaky speed cameras. Coming up to that roundabout one evening I witnessed one of nature's wonders, of one of those mass starling bird flocks in the sky above it, all wheeling around in unison. Marvelous; then they all dived down into the spinney of trees growing on the roundabout to roost for the night. And yes, do take notice what many others are telling you about roundabout lane discipline. Being in the wrong position is especially dangerous if you have motorcycles around you. However, there's no law to say you can't drive round and around on the inside lane all day long.

I got hit by an American at a Roundabout, as I was going all the way round, he entered without stopping, hit me in the side at full speed so that my car span out of control, turns over as it met the curb and rolled through a sign post and into a field. No one was hurt, by the grace of God. When we met at the side of the road I asked him why he crashed right into me. He answered, because he was told that at roundabouts there is no need for you to stop, you just drive right on! Then I passed out and woke up in a Travel Lodge foyer surrounded by people who witnessed the crash.

Roundabouts are simple. If you approach a junction of any kind, and there's traffic coming from the right-hand side (UK Only), then STOP!!. On entry to dual lane roundabouts, Get in the left lane if you intend at coming off at 12 O' Clock or before. Get in the Right-hand lane and indicate right if you intend at coming off at 12 O' Clock or after (This includes going around one or more times). Always Indicate left at the junction before the one you want to actually exit, and look in your left mirror before moving across lanes. It really is that fucking simple. If both entry and exit to a roundabout are dual carriageways, use lane discipline and your fucking indicators! one day, America will catch on to how many lives are saved by roundabouts compared to junctions with lights. Another thing to thank us Brits for ;P
