Why I Invest in Index Funds

Index funds are powerful tools to build wealth. In this video, I explain why.

Note: I am mostly talking about total market or market-cap weighted index funds in this video. Some of the concepts apply to other index funds, that may focus on specific sector or dividends, but such indexes have extra risks.

You can't beat the good old stock market. I love index funds. They are simple, well diversified, low cost and give great returns over time.

Nice video. Would you consider doing another video on Lifecycle Investing (first one was a nice overview) and how a younger investor might implement it?

I like index funds because they are not actively managed. I don't like fees and other overheads. I like to put my money in and forget it until I do taxes.

Hi Nick, with Vanguard specifically, are ETFs more tax efficient than their corresponding index funds? If don’t plan to sell/trade anytime soon, do you recommend investing in Vanguard’s ETFs or their corresponding index funds?

Hi Theo, the ETFs are more tax efficient and can be lower cost or better for long-term investors. I made a video on differences between mutual funds & ETFs here which you may find useful: kzread.info/dash/bejne/X4Sbw8ZmZ8nUZ8o.html

Thank you for this valuable information. What's your view of the 60/40 portfolio in light of the 2022 results ?

Hi Ade, Maybe I'll make a video on this subject, but I still think it's a good portfolio if it matches your goals & risk tolerance. The bond allocation still reduced some of the shock.

Hi Nick. I noticed that there are people who invest in Vanguard admirals that cost $3K knowing that Fidelity have a no minimum fee. I understand everyone investment is different. But what I’m trying to understand is why would they pay $3000 instead of going free? Is it because Vanguard market value is greater than Fidelity?

It's only for the first $3,000 invested in each fund, so once you have that much in each fund it doesn't matter anymore with Vanguard. Vanguard ETFs are also an option with minimum of 1 per share (or maybe fractional shares with some brokers). I think some people just like Vanguard since their indexes generally have more of the underlying stocks (less sampling), many Vanguard mutual funds have same tax advantages as ETFs, Vanguard is owned by its funds' owners, etc. Fidelity funds are also very good in my opinion. I hope this helps!

@@nickdoyle-achievefinancial2464 Yes. I find your response very useful. Thank you very much. I have just one more thing to ask of you. FSKAX vs VTSAX: 0.00% vs 0.04 Other than their expense ration comparison and the differences in stocks, VTSAX market value has a lot more which makes me believe that placing my money in Vanguard’s index is safer. Sorry. I am completely NEW to this. But what do you say?

Hi Ade! Yes and no. We reduced my bond allocation to 0% due to our age, risk tolerance, & having a mortgage (negative bond). We plan to add some bonds back as we get closer to financial independence.

@@nickdoyle-achievefinancial2464 yessir . Right now “things can always change” but I plan on being 100% stocks from age 0-12, then 75/25 stocks to cash from age 12-14 . Then In high school 50/50. And in college around 20/80. By the time they are in high school I really want a years worth of tuition put into cash so if all failed I could at least bank roll the first year . But again, times change and life situations change but as of today this is my general idea, I’m not much of a bond lover tbh
