Can you explain how the expense ratio factors in? On the fidelity prospectus’, it appears that the yield shown already includes the expense ratio deducted. However, based on the return in my account it looks like the yield is further reduced by the expense ratio. Maybe I’m calculating incorrectly but wanted to ask your thoughts. Thanks

It is my understanding that the expense is reflected in the performance numbers. The 7-day SEC yield on FDLXX has this in the additional info: "It is the Fund's total income net of expenses, divided by the total number of outstanding shares and includes any applicable waiver or reimbursement." What are you seeing that isn't calculating correctly?

Thanks for your very informative video. However, as a new user of Fidelity, I am having trouble setting up the MMF. Where do I go in CMA to set up FDLXX as the MMF?

You're welcome, glad you found it useful! For CMA, you cant use an MMF as the default core position. You would need to purchase it, or use a separate non-CMA brokerage where MMFs can be set as core. As far as I know, FDLXX cant be set as the core position. In practice, I don't find this to be an issue. I use FZFXX as the core for my brokerage, and occasionally purchase FDLXX when I get large deposits.

I assume you might understand MMF better than I do, I have a question. Is the MMF large enough to put pressure on treasury bond price? As many depositors move their money into MMF, is it reasonable to speculate that that'll get treasury bond more expensive?

Money-market funds are at a record of over $5 trillion invested. The treasury bill market is around $24 trillion, but many money markets also invest in other government debt (agency, municipal, etc), repo agreements, & some corporate debt. I definitely think flows in/out of money markets can influence pricing of the treasuries. Hope this helps!

I noticed the 7-day yield for FDLXX has gone all the way down to about 4% since you made this video. Some of the other ones you discussed (SPAXX, FDRXX, etc) seem to be hovering around 4.5%. Just curious if you're still staying loyal to FDLXX, or are you considering making a switch?

Hi Cameron, I am sticking with FDLXX. It is tempting to go for the extra 0.5%, since I don't think it's that much more risk. FDLXX should be somewhat similar to the 1 month t-bills which saw a dip over the past month: www.cnbc.com/quotes/US1M. The rate has been going back up, but who knows if it will stay that way. The MM funds using the repos don't seem exposed to this. I am planning to stick with FDLXX.

i want to buy money market funds from usa but i don't live in the usa is it possible? and do you guys know any money market funds ?

  • @nickdoyle-achievefinancial2464

I'm not sure how to do that. There are probably some brokerages service non-US people and allow buying US funds. Schwab international seems to be one possibility, but I don't know much about it or the funds offered. Another idea is to just buy T-Bills from a broker, but I think a fund would be a bit better.

Why use Fidelity with extremely high exp ratios. Vanguard start at 0.09% (VUSXX) up to 0.15% for municipal. Ouch.

I made another video about using Fidelity as what is effectively a checking account: kzread.info/dash/bejne/pquVp61mgae3etI.html. I cannot do this at Vanguard, and is worth the higher ER to me. Otherwise, I agree VGs MM funds are better if you are going to shuffle money in and out of it manually.

Agree there is great opportunity in stocks! Most of my money is going into total market index funds. The past six months have gone well. It’s just some of my emergency fund in money markets.
