Why I Have 14 Credit Cards At Age 27

In this video I’m going over all 14 credit cards I have at age 27! These are some of the best credit cards out there and have helped me to earn millions of credit card points worth tens of thousands of dollars in value. The 14 credit cards I’ve been approved for so far on my credit card journey have helped me to travel for free with points while also building my credit and allowing me to manage my money better. Hopefully my story can give some good insight into how to do the same!
Over the years, I’ve learned to optimize my everyday spending by using the best credit cards available. In this video, I want to go over my full credit card journey because I get a lot of questions about what I’ve done to get to this point.
I want to note that I’ve paid $0 in interest with these credit cards because I only use them as a substitute for my debit card while sticking to a budget. Here, I’ll also talk about the importance of paying your balance on time and in full with credit cards because doing that has helped me to reach a credit score in the high 700s which I think is very achievable for anyone!

I hate it when people assume others are drowning in debt simply because they have credit cards! Credit cards, when used responsibly, are excellent tools for building credit and earning rewards on purchases that you would have made anyway. That doesn't include the protection benefits, introductory offers, and other perks that are attached to the majority of them, making them even more enticing. Awesome video, bud!! 🔥

It really is unfortunate that the "you're drowning in credit card debt just by having credit cards, so do not get them" narrative has stuck in society's mind so effectively. It kept me away from credit cards for a long time and once i learned the truth i was really bothered that i had stayed away for so long because like you said, when used correctly/responsibly, they are a great tool for building credit history (as credit score is heavily reliant on amount, types, and utilization of credit accounts) and they provide amazing benefits on spending you're already doing. For me, getting the Capital One Savor card was so eye opening because it's giving me 3-4% back on dining, entertainment, streaming and grocery stores, which is nearly 100% of what i spend my money on outside of rent and bills. And just this month when i got the card they added complimentary Uber One for a year and 10% (!!!!) back on Uber/Uber Eats which is HUGE for me. Planning to add either the Capital One Venture or Venture X next for the Bifecta.

My first card was the Chase Hess Visa, to help with gas prices--5% cash back at Hess stations. Almost 19 years ago. I had no clue about which cards to look for and my mother was adamantly against credit cards for the negative reasons you mentioned. It's since been PC'ed into a Chase Freedom. Love hearing about people's credit card journey's and how they've optimized their setup over time to get the best multipliers, while continuing to look out for high welcome bonuses and accumulating credit card points, to get loads of value. Love that you've kept your 1st credit card open, to keep your avg age of accounts high. Like you said, sooo many people assume that having a bunch of credit cards is a bad thing, and indicates that you have a bunch of debt, which is simply not true, because you can have a lot of credit cards but have specific use cases with each of them, and continue to be responsible with them. Great video as always Daniel!

Thanks Matt!! Yeah my situation for having so many cards is a lot different than the people that get them for spending into further debt. If you can use a credit card just like a debit card and pay it off on-time and in-full every month, there's NO reason to not use them! As you mentioned, the amount of rewards you've earned from using a credit card rather than your debit card is pretty insane... and everyone can do the same! I think the big misconception around credit cards is that getting multiple of them will hurt your credit score, but that couldn't be further from the truth. As long as you're a responsible consumer, you may as well use credit cards and travel the world for free!! Thanks for sharing your personal experience Daniel! Another great one as always.

Two months after turning 18 I got my first card, the WF Student Cash Back (Oct 2019) that eventually got discontinued so I got automatically upgraded to the Active Cash in Oct 2021 which was honestly so perfect (came with a CLI too). In Nov 2020, I wanted to make an expensive Amazon purchase and that $150 SUB sounded too good to pass up. So the Chase Amazon Rewards became my 2nd card. Now it’s April 2023 and I finally got a 3rd card about 2 weeks ago, the Citi Custom Cash (current spending habits will have me using it on dining). I’m planning on getting two more after the summer (AMEX BCE & CFF). Reason for waiting is to complete the Citi SUB and a summer bonus on my Amazon card is gonna have me exclusively using it until the end of July.

Just started my credit card journey this past July with the Quicksilver, as a student I'm kicking myself for not getting the Student Quicksilver with the new CapitalOne and Uber deal with free 24 months UberOne and 10% back on any Uber purchases. In the near future, would love to get the Hilton Surpass for hotels and Amex Gold and/or Sapphire Preferred for flights but I heard the Chase portal can be more expensive than regular priced flights so I'm leaning more towards Amex Gold; not sure what would be the 3rd card to round out. Been loving your videos recently as they have been educational and enjoyable to watch!

I find the chase trifecta good if you want a variety of transfers partners to use your points on. Otherwise for me it made more sense to get the United explorer card over the CSP due to its many perks such free checked bag, priority boarding, TSA pre heck/Global entry credit, & two annual Lounge passes. Plus I live near a United hub so I mostly fly with them. The BILT card pairs nicely with having any United card too since they’re one of the transfer partners.

The story behind your first credit card is very similar to mine. My first credit card was a Bank of America Customized Cash Rewards card (very basic first credit card type card) that i got shortly after college. I'm in my early 30s now and new to the real credit card game and just got a Capital One Savor and aiming for a Venture or Venture X next for a Capital One catch all Bifecta that effectively covers all my spending categories. The Savor is now going to become my main credit card and the BoA one I'm going to do like you did. Upgrade it and then use it the bare minimum amount i need to to keep it active since it's my first/oldest card. So i'll have 3 cards total and that'll probably have me covered for a long time unless the reward tiers/benefits drastically change at some point.

My first credit card was the discover IT card. My second Amex gold and then Amex delta gold. My current plan is to get the venture x next and then get the chase freedom flex and chase sapphire preferred. And that will put me at 5/24. This set up should allow me to minimal effective annual fee while maximizing points.

2 weeks ago, I got the Amazon Visa credit card for the gift card. HOWEVER, I had unknowingly been building credit through PayPal credit for a few years now, which is awesome. I also went ahead and nabbed myself the Freedom Unlimited(this one I got today actually) and AMEX Gold card. I'm basically trying to make up for lost time by applying to as many (quality)cards as I can. Sure my score will take a hit but playing the long game here.

Hey Daniel, I was just curious about the Chase Points, so when you transfer those points to a Chase Travel Partner from the Sapphire Preferred Card, do you still get the 5% Cashback on it? Or there is no Cashback at all since you transferred the points to the partners. I have another question, so I have the Discover It Credit Card, Amex Blue Cash Everyday, Chase Freedom Unlimited and Chase Freedom Flex. I am thinking about getting Chase Sapphire Preferred but I am not sure do I get that as my 5th credit card or upgrade my Chase Freedom Unlimited to the Sapphire Preferred. I don't see a significant difference between unlimited and preferred in terms of points. What is your opinion in this case?
