    Good video, I have practiced since 1975. Back in the 90s Dojos were full because of Seagal films. I am lucky that our class are always busy. I totally agree about looking around and finding a club that suits your personality. Having a Judo background as well I settles into Tomiki Aikido as I liked the testing of techniques in a competitive format. At 63 after 49 years of practice I enjoy my Aikido as much as I did when I first started.

    Never force a particular technique to work, always work with the opportunity, what the opponent gives you, so it takes training and experience to acquire the variety of techniques that are good for your body type and skill level , in my opinion striking and grappling should be combined in a comprehensive manner,

    And from my experience, I tend to see that younger people are out in street fight situations more than the “more mature”, personally being 68 I am not out carousing and prowling and my combat is exclusively in the dojang, but sincere practice of basics and some fun with more “advanced” techniques of Taekwondo, Hapkido, and judo plus a good dose of randori and daeryon, old school style with contact but some safety rules, less so than IJF AND WTF, give me good confidence if some encounter were to occur, but also prevent any serious injuries that a lot of full contact would cause. Some people tend to think that the only way to have good martial arts is to practice often full contact, I think that is just asking for injuries. You can always pound the bag, break boards, slam throws on a crash pass but I advise using sensible control for the most part

    In my opinion, Aikido helps you develop the most important aspects of every martial art, better than most. That being balance, breathing, situational awareness, controlling your opponents energy etc. It's a superb foundational art.

    As a Hapkido instructor myself there is a lot in common with some of the fluff in Hapkido and what can be found in Aikido. The thing is that it is the instructor's responsibility to translate and adapt techniques for the students to get them started thinking about how a technique works in the real world. Traditional training is all well and good but realistic training with realistic scenarios are need to introduce the student to making techniques practical. Unfortunately it also means that the instructor needs some real world experience of their own.

    Yes indeed. I started in the mid 1990s and my long time 'aikido' sensei has also been doing Wing Chun since he was 7 [he's 60 now] is a 2nd Dan in Okinawa karate and he brings other martial art dojos in to cross train with us, such as taekwondo and jui jitsu. He also gives us realistic scenarios to play with. I was asked by a guy who runs a security firm [found out I'd been doing aikido for decades] if I wanted extra money to work in clubs. I discussed it with my sensei, who wasn't happy about it but still instructed me with some real time techniques. Hard to restrain someone who's drunk or on drugs so a downward strike with extended index finger knuckle to the subscapularis tendon in the shoulder, detaches the tendon from the bone. They want to hit you BUT they can't lift their arm. Very nasty. I decided NOT to put myself in that type of situation so I didn't take the job.

    Practical application in actual defense situations calls for a deep internal understanding of the principles of balance (mental, emotional, physical and spiritual) - whatever method/style you employ absolutely can lead you to this and then at some point you realize that you need to let the structure of method/style go because the internal knowledge gained through consistent training takes you to another level of being in any situation in life. MA is essentially, ultimately about transformation, development to being a better person.

    Although I have not yet been priviledged to be a student in the art, I would think what puts many prospective and beginning students off is just how physically rough Aikido is. I'm particularly thinking of all the throws and falls .. In fact, I can't think of a rougher art in that regard other than maybe traditional judo. So, you better be in dang good physical condition before even beginning your training, and be able to stand up to all the rough throws and falls ,,,, and I just don't see how anyone over, say the age of 50 or so, can get into it unless they really are. I mean, it's possible a student could pay a sensei/dojo to never use them as the "uke" in a technique during their training, but then you would have to wonder how effective their training would really be in that kind of situation? One possible solution for this problem I have suggested on here (but no one seems to have picked up on 😉) is possibly developing an "aqua-Akido" method of training, with the training of beginners starting in a swimming pool filled with water just above knee depth. This would help avoid injury to the participants, until they have become accustomed to the throws and falls and the "proper" way to execute them. This slowing down of the footwork would also help them emphasize same, and help build up speed, coordination and strength, in a way similar to a baseball batter in the batter's box swinging 2 or 3 bats prior to stepping up the plate with just one. Over time, the level of the water could be gradually dropped to, maybe knee level, then shin level, and eventually ankle level, before making the shift to dry land inside the dojo. This method may also aid potential students who have some sort of medical disability or condition to which throws and falls could do some serious harm to them. Just an idea .. KEEP GROWING, AIKIDOFLOWERS!

    In fact, if you look further on KZread, there is a video by Aikido sensei Erik Calderon who points out what he finds to be the three main things a beginner in Aikido can expect to encounter that might put them off on their quest to learn the art. One of those, again, is the roughness of the falls and throws.

    I’m no expert, but Aikido always felt like it expected too much motion. In the time a guy throws a single punch, I’m expected to move in, grab the arm, and start a pin or throw. Maybe someone can if it was a slow guy, but someone who punches fast seems nearly impossible.

    What you're missing about Aikido is how Aikido movements are connected to the sword. First you give a sword to an attacker and get him to attack using the sword; you'll find that all the timing and distances that you train during Aikido will fit perfectly. In fact, the principles of Aikido work just as well with longer reach weapons (staff, spear, pool stick, rake), short reach weapons, and even bare handed attacks. The thing that changes is the matter of distances and timing. The "slow" movements involved in typical Aikido kata are perfectly suited for defending against the longer distances involved in weapon attacks. So if you want to train in Aikido for defending against bare handed fights, you're going to need insight and training techniques for the super quick timing and super short distances involved with punches, grabs, elbows, and knees.

    Systems such as Defendo and Combato descended from military combatives, where "ungentlemanly" techniques were the norm. I was wondering if a version of Aikido could be had that taught some of the same things, quick, simple, easy to learn blows to vitals, pressure points, and pain inducing joint locks, to be tried to save the bacon of an ordinary otherwise untrained person on the streets in case of attack?

  • @FreeSalesTips

    @FreeSalesTips

    Ай бұрын

    It's not easy to rework Aikido to fit that kind of "instant impact, low training time" framework that is a character of Defendo and Combato. The reason is in the context that Aikido movements are connected to sword movements: Aikido is a form of weapon defense that allows a swinging weapon to swing around. The concept of moving off the line of attack then blending your own energy with the weapon strike is inherently a difficult skill to master and is the opposite of "instant impact, low training time".

I also find it's easy to add stuff like elbows and knees to Aikido. I think the major mental obstacle to overcome for a lot of people is to stop expecting the style to feed all the answers. Don't mean to be terribly negative here, but Aikido only works as an augmentation to another style and then only situationally. Unfortunately you only have to do a quick search to show the dozens of "masters" combating multiple people who are obviously holding back, you can watch people literally fall and roll before they are touched, you see a style steeped rigidly in tradition, and in most dojos you spend more time bowing to the founder than practicing. The style was never adequately shown off during the first couple UFCs, and all problems are blamed on the practicioner instead of the style like a gaslighting partner. It does not adapt believing itself perfect. It does work, but best as an augmentation of other styles, you can work in an Aikido move while you are doing something else if you know it. Bang for the buck though, that's a lot of work for a potential opportunity that likely will never come in sparring, fighting, or really anything. Leaves Aikido in a weird place.

  • @krishnajam

    @krishnajam

    2 ай бұрын

    The augmentation also plays an important part in the evolution of Aikido. Senseis in every Dojo who have trained in other martial arts do incorporate other styles to make it relevant. For me Jiu waza in our Dojo used to be my moment of truth. Many things didn't work, but the Jiu waza sessions helped in course correction. I have trained Karate and Taekwondo before. There were criticisms of these arts too, but people have special hate for Aikido! I guess it is the way it is trained (slowly) and the unnatural holds probably.

  • @SoldierAndrew

    @@krishnajamNo, it's because every Aikido master in cell phone videos facing a challenge from a boxer, wrestler or judoka gets rag dolled or beat up like a pit bull on a pork chop. And because many Aikido sensei pronounce that Aikido isn't for fighting and if one wants to learn to fight go learn boxing. And because osensei himself wrote in his book Art of Peace, Aikido is not for fighting and the physical techniques of Aikido are for exercise only.

    I think 1) you shouldn't use aikido for self defense, 2) aikido is complex or ambitious because it's both hands and weapon practice 3) I used to train for only 2 years and found original aikido strange because we had to simulate the bokken movements when we were throwing or submitting with hands only. your arm becomes the bokken so you would do hand techniques like if you were holding the bokken. 4) traditional karate is richer because they include all aikido techniques 5) aikido seems seriously limited compared to combat sports because you only practice defense techniques: an aikidoka cannot attack using aikido technique simply because they only attack with atemi. 6) if you want to be expert at throwing forget aikido and practice judo.

    Really simple - people that can really fight who learn aikido will adapt the martial art to their existing fighting ability. People that can't fight who learn aikido will add certificates and grades to their existing lack of fighting ability and nothing times nothing equals nothing! Rocky Marciano used boxing to help fine tune the fighting skills he already had. Boxing did not give him his talent for fighting. Either you can fight or you cannot! Martial arts were developed to allow people to safely practice fighting and thus all the forms of the arts have already had their teeth removed. If you are a non fighter then just be content with what you achieve in the dojo and don't be so stupid as to test out your martial art in the street. Reality sucks at times but sometimes it bites!

    I have to say, as an Instructor with 40 yrs of Martial experience. I once knew a guy, who they called, "Superman" was restricted by a judge for using Kenpo against 3 Cops who were not in uniform at a Club. He claimed they had all been drinking including himself, they were obnoxious toward him, but instead of ignoring them he challenged them to shut up. Well, the trouble began as they approached him, he began to move n attack! Well, there were no winners here, of course when the cops arrived he was arrested n locked up. Of course the guys that got beat up, knew the cops that arrested him. So, when he got to the Judge, the Judge ordered him to not use Martial Arts, for 3 yrs probation, if he did, he would be locked up. So, of course he said what? How am I gonna defend myself if I get attacked? The Judge replied, looking at the size of this guy, and said learn Aikido, it's less aggressive.🤣 My point is, be careful who u beat up, it might not end well, just walk away if u can.
