why I drove 200+ cars (and why I can ONLY own a manual)

I was sad when Top Gear was canceled. The good one I mean.
thanks for driving a manual.

Boris, you're so right, man. Here in England there's a reason you're not allowed to drive manual if you pass your test in an automatic. Here, automatics aren't really a thing, and an automatic-only license is considered kind of like "baby's first driving licence". They're marked specially so the police can arrest you if they catch you in a manual car, and are a kind of a badge of shame that you couldn't get a 'real' driving license.

This right here is a prime example of what it truly means when I say "I come to Life of Boris for Boris". I love the comedic gameplay, I adore the manic Slav cooking, I am here for the sarcastic country tours. But just as much, I love it when Boris feels free to drop the facade a little and get introspective, chill out for awhile and talk about a meaningful part of his life and why it has deeper meaning to him. It feels good to listen to a passionate man talk deeply about what gives his life purpose. Sadly, regarding "manual electric cars", I'm afraid that is likely impossible for the same reason that way back in the day there were no manual steam cars: Torque. Jay Leno has described steam engines as "The Hand of God" in that all of the power is derived from the expansion of vapor in a cylinder pushing on a piston to turn a crank. The result is all torque, and in that regard electric motors are much the same; all of the power the motor has to give is being given 100% of the time depending on how much electricity they are being fed. As such, steam and electric engines do not have gearboxes both because they do not need them; there is no need to enhance the given power by increasing or decreasing revs to the driveshaft, and also because such a thing would be almost physically impossible; stick a steam engine or electric motor directly where a gas engine goes and without extremely careful handling or complicated mod kits it would tear a normal gearbox to shreds.

One could ramp up an electric motor, and set torque limits to prevent destruction. Or transmit the torque through a torque converter, and just replace the Auto transmission with a manual, letting the fluidcoupling limit the torque, although it would need to be extensively cooled. It makes NO sense to do that, but I'd still configure my EV with that solution, should it be available. Until then, 30 + year old cars it is. Maybe useful for trucks/cars where you need towing power/offroad capabilities, since depending on the load/incline/whatever, it might be better to start slower. Idk honestly

Formula E cars do have geared transmissions, though when I learned about it it was only three gears. This is because while electric motors do have a more or less flat power curve past a certain RPM, they do have a ramp-up from 0. This is fairly fast, but making it even faster is still worth doing for a racing car.

Thank you. - I too, was following the "classic Top Gear" and it was so much more than a car show with three British sods falling over a lot. It was what kept me alive in my darkest days. As did your content. - I have only ever owned manual cars as well. I am simple as well. In my country, the MX5 is just not enough car for the price you pay, but I do agree with how you feel about it. I will always drive manual as well, and that's my personal choice. - I'm currently in a 2012 Scirocco. I do agree, the Audi's are just for people who pay too much for a different looking Skoda, and also older Audi's are notorious of having issues with their 4wd system. - If I had the money, I would build a manual Passat. There's so much more I could add. I can't tell you how deeply I relate to this video. If ever there was a chance I could be part of a car related video with you, I would love to do something. In Germany, almost 50 percent of cars come off the assembly line with an automatic transmission, according to figures from the Deutsche Automobil Treuhand (DAT). This is a significant increase 20 years ago it was less than 20 percent. In the current fleet, every third car is automatic. But it's still normal in driving school to learn on a Manual, you can also choose to only do your lessons and your exam on a automatic but then there is something in your license written down that you are only allowed to drive automatic cars... Nice video was really calm and enjoyable :)

it is not a surprise to me that you like cars that much since a lot of the videos (specially the music videos) feature cars so prominently, i was surprised by the fact that the cancelation of TOP GEAR was the reason you started the channel and i think that is awesome, i grew up watching Clarkson, Hammond and May showcasing the greatness of cars and the fun of driving. hearing the news that they were going to fire them and bring on some other people to do the show was heartbreaking honestly, i didn't have the means to drive a car growing up and i still don't because driving where i live is a fucking nightmare but on the few occasions my friend let my drive his BMW 2001 M3, i got a bit of that adrenaline hearing it respond to my every action and knowing that i have to shift correctly or hurt the car, and although it was a very memorable experience i never sought after driving again but simply because the way i see driving is that it's just a need not a want, i need to drive a acar to get from here to there and that's it. Maybe if i lived in a different environment where driving isn't as dangerous and careless i would seek it out but for now i'm on the opposite side, i still understand the thrill and enjoyment of owning and driving a manual since i saw it through the show and the many friends i have who still own and maintain their old manulas but i also understand that hybrids and electrics are just overall safer and more economic for the AVERAGE driver, it's sad to see the big boys of car manufacturing dulling down their new designs but if they want to sell them they have to appeal to most people who just want to press accelerator and go and that's about it. sorry for going on this long i just felt compelled to share, thanks for making this video Boris.

The part about independently practice driving in abandoned parking lots, reminded me about one that existed in a stadium in my city. That city stadium wasn't abandoned and still had events, but its parking lot was neglected and fully open to the public, since there was no fence. Due to the parkin lot being neglected and full of holes, bumps, speed bumps and stones, it was the perfect place to simulate driving on the average Mexican road, and lots of people would enter there to practice driving and teach their children and friends how to drive. Saddly, once there was a new administration, they made changes in our city, they fixed roads, made new buildings and simplyfied our already simplified city logo. And about the stadium parking lot? It got paved and fenced, basically privatizing it and leaving it closed when unused. It's possible that the municipality has more abandoned parking lots where to practice, since it's an industrial and storage municipality, but that parking lot was the most convenient in the city.

You can still gear break with an automatic by switching from D to 2, 1, L or whatever else it may be labeled. Not sure if this works for CVTs but obviously it does with DSG or planetary.

This is glorious. Boris, you’re a legend for this. I also drive a manual. I have a 2020 Toyota Corolla Hatchback that I’ve played with and it now makes about 185-190 WHP over the 140 or so it made stock. There’s no substitute for the experience of being in tune with your car, whatsoever. It’s a sense of freedom and a relationship type thing when you take care of tune and do right by your car and it does right by you. There’s nothing in the world like it.

That's funny, I have the same issue with falling asleep in cars. I think my Dad started taking me for car rides when I was a colicky baby. Later in childhood, I remember always riding with him, even on his GS1000. Any errand he had, he asked if I wanted to join. We lived in rural Pennsylvania and he would often take the "scenic route". Driving (and shooting! We did so much shooting! I was so scared the first time. He taught me to field strip his Beretta 92FS blindfolded) was father/son time. We drove _on_ road. When he got his first Jeep (a manual 5-speed coupe), we drove _off_ road. It had 4.11 gears and sounded, to me, like a tank. He would pass a random trailhead, look at me -- "hey, you wanna?..." Of course, the answer was "yes!" So many happy times being co-pilot. Edit: I remember, one time at a gas station, he turned the Jeep off and it kept running. It dieseled for about 10 ten seconds while we looked at each other in horror. It finally stops, then Dad says, "runs so good, it doesn't want to stop!" Me: _(nervous titter)_ "Make sure it doesn't start again while I'm in it!"

I used to assist in photoshoots, and a regular client was Hyundai. They'd give us upcoming car models to photograph, and we'd often drive them to/from the shooting locations, to position them for the right shot, or just to try them out. A lot of their newer vehicles, especially the SUVs and electric models, felt like ultra-safe 'transport bubbles'. Whereas my manual i30 (and the company's sportier i30N models that we took some photos of) actually felt like you were operating a powerful machine. Timing the clutch, listening to the high/low revs and deciding the right gear to shift to makes you more cognisant of the underlying technology, and appreciative of the time and effort that went into inventing and manufacturing these vehicles. I still sometimes get that feel from automatic vehicles (e.g. the Getz that I learned to drive on, even if it feels like a dodgem car now), so maybe it's also stuff like the large size, soundproofing and fancy upholstery you see on so many modern cars, obscuring the user's perception of the technology underneath in the same way that an automatic transmission does.

I have got my license 2 years ago, not very far from now, until today I've just driven manuals, never even tried an automatic. And also my car rn is a old 90s car, a car without no assists or helps, everything mechanic and it's great, I'm not even a car enthusiast but I fell in love with the full control of a old manual car. It's so weird how nowadays some driving schools just teach automatic, the experience out of a manual is something amazing. So I speak as a Gen Z guy that understands what old people mean when they speak about driving old cars, not just manuals, no, some manuals are also filed with assists and helps, the pure manual without assists is the way to go, my car is by far a old ass slow car, but I get a ton of fun out of it! Will try to always get manual cars specially the ones without a lot of assists. Thanks Boris, thanks for the channel, thanks for this vid, keep up bro, love from Portugal 🇵🇹❤️

I learned to drive a manual when my uncle bought a truck and brought me along to pick it up. Both the truck we drove there and the truck he was buying were manual, and when I went to get in the passenger seat he went "nope, you're driving." The trip was a good hour long, involved the freeway, and I stalled it 4x on the same light with a guy behind us (who did not so much as honk)... But we got there. The drive back was my first time ever driving manual alone... And I've been hooked ever since. I swapped the transmission in my truck to a manual, I bought a manual jeep, and I have never looked back. You *have* to focus more, so I'm more attentive in general, the added control is really nice in snow/ice, and it's just more fun.

Brother Boris, I couldn't agree more. I once drove an automatic, I was bored to death. I was so bored I completely forgot I was driving. It was more interesting to look into the horizon like I used to do when I had to catch a metro every day to go to school and back home. This was very dangerous as I'm a person that can easily be distracted and was paying almost no attention to the road and traffic.

My current car is a 2019 toyota corolla - xse. Most websites will happily talk about the CVT that it usually comes with as some sort of great thing. What you have to dig for is that they also made a standard version, which i am thrilled to have found. It's awesome.

I work at a dealership that sells KIA, Chevrolet, and Ford, and it's literally one in a million to see a manual car there. All CVT'S and slushboxes. Only three cars out of all three companies lineups can be purchased with a manual. My mom's in the market for a new Manual SUV and was sad to see that the Ford Bronco (wayy to expensive and big for her) is the only one that is sold with a stick in america. It's rare, but it means these cars should be respected as engineering feats, choosing to keep what was right with a little bit of extra juice from an electric motor. Shame that the CRZ didn't get the love it deserved, and instead got laughed at because hybrids were stigmatized.

Having the ability to slide the back tires around and steer with the throttle, or choose certain gears and rpms for hills and different conditions is extremely useful. But beyond just being useful. Don't worry, there are still plenty of people who enjoy manual cars, and although sales may be decreasing, Honda proved with the CRZ and the original Insight that hybrid manuals are definitely possible. Having driven the same model cars, with only a difference in transmission, the manual car always feel much more nimble, much more alive - when a friends auto broke in his Audi, he put a manual in, and it made a huge difference in the feel of the car. I feel like you will like Honda S2000, they have some of the best shifter feels in the world.... but since you can't afford any of those, go to the United Kingdom, and for less than €6000 you can buy a Porsche Boxter 986.

One thing I like about cars besides driving is how manufacturing cars is almost like a measuring stick for how well an entire society is doing. The amount of machined parts from many different materials and shapes that go into a single car is quite staggering when you think about it. And each and every little piece, down to the tiniest bolt or nut had to come off an assembly line somewhere. So if a country has managed to put together their own cars from domestically manufactured parts, then that means something. Doesn't even have to be a premium sportscar or anything, just functioning car basically means a society has reached a "tech level" that many many other societies haven't.

Boris, I drive a 2011 3.6 VW Passaratti CC with original 300hp from that same VR6 you had in the golf. Got it for 55% of the price in 2018, with 50k km. It is, unfortunately, automatic. I try to emulate the gear reduction hitting the S position on the shift when slowing down, as that mode extends the gears range. I feel you, it is not the same. I used to drive a manual 1.8 Chevrolet Corsa, with no assistance, no safety features, hell, not even hydraulic steering, but brother, that care always made me smile while at work. At times I think about modding my car and installing an manual gearbox. But I am no tuner or mechanic at all, and I mostly use the car to travel, as in the city my bike is the main mean of transportation. I had the opportunity to trade in the Passaratti for an Porshe Panamera, which I went to drive, and despised, especially the price. It is now almost at 200k km, and I am happy with it. In my case it is an advantage of having almost a Porsche like car share the platform with VW Passat, so maintenance is cheaper then the Porsche or Audi, at least over here. But the monotonous market of newer cars for us who love these things seems to be a trend from now on indeed. If I could afford a second car, I would buy an old manual carburated car. In my country, Brazil, VW is king, we have a lot of VW Gol (yes, without F), somewhat inspired by the old Audi Quattro, from the 80s and Chevrolet Opala, that I would highly suggest you search about and when you come to Brazil to drive as well. Ladas exist over here, but are not a common sight, as the period of time they were imported did not last long, the more frequent to find are Nivas with the off-road guys. As most people cannot afford new cars, most people still drive older versions made here in Brazil, when automatic was not an option. As a car enthusiast I believe you would like to research about VW in Brazil, you will not be let down. Thank you for the video.

I honestly think that is the big thing, the fact that people see cars only as transportation and that's ok but there are a lot of people like us that love the feeling of being in control of a machine and enjoy driving it, i just hope that manual cars don't disappear completely

One of the greatest vids you've released Boris, really cool to hear your thoughts on the industry.

I grew up in the balkans and here the choice is always a manual, especially if you live in the countryside, my first car that i drove was a golf 2 and the mechanical feel from it was the magic that brought me the love for manual (and for vw) and there's a saying here that "if you learn how to drive a golf 2, you'll learn to drive anything"

Boris won't see this, but I am a huge manual enthusiast. I, like him, am also upset over top gears disbanding. I never thought I would get to where I am in my life. I do so much interesting stuff, if I were to just record and upload the raw content, I'm sure some like-minded people would also enjoy it. I've always been a bit of a nobody through school, but since I got out of it all, I started driving. I started to meet people. I've helped them modify their cars. And in the process I've owned, modified and driven my own cars in ways I could never imagine all those years ago when I picked up some of my first racing games way long ago. I think this is my final piece of inspiration that I needed to get started on my journey. I will continue to do manual swaps on cars, racing cars, driving places, and doing cool stuff. I'll record me doing so and start to upload it just because I can. This should be the start of my journey. I can't wait to show it off for the world to see. I don't really care how many people watch it anyways, I only really care about if I can find a way to keep finding new cool stuff to do. Thank you boris. Much love

Totally agree. Currently I'm driving a Citroen C5 III Estate with the 5-speed manual. As a fellow enthusiast you might agree, but the C5 feels like it has a soul. When it's cold outside, you feel it in every part of the car. When it's really cold I use to double clutch because changing gears is so hard with the thick oil. Some say it's annoying, but I really like that I have to understand the car in order to drive it smoothly

I am in full support of this becoming a car channel. I will only drive an automatic if it's older than 1974, because then it's a different enough experience for me to stay focused even without a manual.

Hyundai's making a fairly convincing manual electric car. It'll never quite be the same, but for us nostalgic gearheads, it'll be our best option in the coming decades!

There was already an electric manual car decades ago. Granted, it was a gated manual and absolutely dreadful in most aspects, but it did exist

Loved your discussion on what cars mean to those who see them as more than transportation. This was quite meaningful to me as someone who also first became interested in cars from the real top gear. Keep up the great work and don’t be bothered by people who don’t understand why you choose to drive a manual, they will never know.
