gottfer Actually, from a practicality standpoint, the imperial system is optimized for the general non scientific human experience. The people creating it weren’t total idiots you know. For instance, it’s much more convenient to measure close distances, as well as the human body in feet than meters. As far as temperature, Fahrenheit makes sense for measuring weather: MOST global temperatures fall between 0 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit, so it gives a sensible 1 to 100 sliding scale of coldness to warmness. Imperial units, while not very good for scientific work, are very helpful in their own way. Metric may be logical, but that doesn’t automatically make it human friendly in scale and composition.

As someone from the US who can cook and bake in imperial/metric/whatever-the-fuck-you’d-call-Turkish-cooking-measurements (i.e. 1 çay bardağı, 1 su bardağı, etc -1 Turkish tea cup, 1 Turkish water cup, etc.), I really appreciated this video. 😆 I lived in Turkey and Vietnam, so learned all 3, and still bake in grams mostly, depending on the recipe (especially bread, it’s so much easier to weigh in metric! And bakers’ percentages are way easier, no way am I doing that in ounces, aka oz.!), and so I learned how to improvise. When he read graham crackers, I was thinking “use any biscuit that has a plain taste!” and he did. And I could eyeball the “stick of butter” when I was an expat, cause, well, I’m used to it, but I was dying when he put the whole Euro-style butter in. 💀 Doesn’t matter now, but a stick of butter in the US is about 115 g. Anyhow, I feel like Boris always cooks by eyeballing anyhow, which is kind of the whole point of cooking, cause there’s so many variables (such as humidity, altitude, personal taste) that any cook should know how to do that, anyhow. And he did great, I’d eat that cheesecake. 🤷🏻‍♀️ The only thing I’d say to do if he ever remade it would be to turn down the temp to 175 C and bake in a water bath to prevent cracking, but my cheesecakes have cracked in the past and still tasted good. And in the US, only our measuring cups are uniform, not mugs, but in Turkey, it’s all pretty much uniform, which is why they can use their tea cup, “water cup” (we’d call it a drinking glass), soup spoon, tea spoon, etc. as measurements in recipes. But you need to be able to read Turkish to do that, so, yay, I have a skill that is useless in most the world since mostly everyone uses metric (which the same could be said for imperial, so I guess that’s two useless skills 🤔). But man, this video really makes me wish the US would switch to metric already. JS. It’s easier in so many ways. I still don’t know how many ounces are in a pound, I can only use cups and tablespoons (15 g/ml) because, well, that’s scooping and pouring. My scale is NEVER switched to imperial even though it has the capability. I think it’s like 16 ounces to a pint, 4 pints to a gallon, and 8 oz to a cup, maybe, I’m probably way off, but who th can remember all that?

@Bagheera I mean I live in Alberta and a lot of people do use imperial for measuring things like your height, but I've only ever seen signs that say 2m apart and at least my oven is in celcius. Also I mean I'm in my last yest of high school and I still havent really been taught the imperial system. The only time we used it was to learn to convert units. Though I'm not originally from here so neither of my parents ever really use imperial for anything so ig I've got a slightly different view on it.

I mean you can always google the conversions, but things like "cup" and "stick of butter" are really really pointless and arbitrary measurements that we in the US just agreed to randomly standardize on. Like most sticks of butter in Europe are like twice to two and a half times the size of a US stick.
