Never slicked my edges. I really love my hair as is. I’m older than many of your followers and growing up in the pro Black 70s allowed us to feel beautiful as is. Mom had an Afro as did aunts and uncles.

I have never gel down my edges and nor do I do my daughter...it was never really a thing here in South Africa but I see now the trend is picking up pace. I just love my hair to look as natural as possible. I love your hair and how feminine you are.

I used to regularly do Wash n Gos and apply very heavy amounts of gel, but I don’t want to anymore. It was really gross when it builded up over many days, and I feel like I have to wash it way more often. I also used to gel down my edges with my natural hair, when I wore wigs and honestly it was a lot of work. If I wear a wig I’ll just have one styled with bangs now. Anyways, lots of the same reasons you provided in the video. This was good to know, thank you for sharing your perspective!

Hello! I’m not a gel person either, don’t think I ever was or will be. I’m a long 4c hair gal of almost 7 years. I love my natural curls and tresses. Long, beautiful, healthy, and just the way God made it to be. Cheers and God bless!

I love how you didn't make this a bashing video, so many natural hair videos that talk about this topic tend to attract a lot of people saying mean things about girls that like doing this. Back in high school i never really did it, because I didn't have the skill, but I always loved watching my mother and Aunts get ready for the club when I was a little, because they use to dress to the 9! Hair, nails, and outfit ALL POPPIN! And most of the hairstyles back in the 90s had the baby-hair look, just more dramatic...But In my opinion the girls from the 90s where so fly. Im really big into fashion and every that I do stems from that passion. It's simply just a form of a fashion statement for me. Everything from my shoes, outfit, hairstyle, and make-up. I feel like everything tells a story. And its completely ok for women to not care about any of these things, but for the naysayers, its not always about having low self-esteem.

I like to slick down my edges but sometimes I don’t. Just depends what look I’m going for. As for gels, they can be very drying. I never thought about how slicking your edges down could be connected to wanting to make your hair more socially acceptable, but I can totally see that. I think I just like sleek looks sometimes.

I used to sleek my edges everytime when having protective hairstyles. It appears to be such an innocent and inconsequential thing to do. But when you think about it, It may have a long term effect. I once decided to use gel when braiding my hair. From parting/sectioning,& applying just a tiny little on the hair strand before the process. I came to notice it has a drying effect on the scalp, and strips your strands of moisture. Worse thing you can get is irritation! I am generally not for gels. When i look at photos or clips of hairstyles aided by gels its a whole heartbreak experience💔😭. My take 🙂

This video is so awesome and so well timed! Thank you for sharing your amazing thoughts on natural hair growth. It's always so helpful! 😍 I like to use hair gel every now and then but not every day. It does tend to make the hair feel super dry and crusty and weird... I'm with you on limiting the use of gel...

So I normally don't sleek down my edges, but other people when they style my hair for me do it and i like how it looks on me and i also like how it looks on other people. I mostly just don't have the skill + patience to re-do them. I definitly like my hair and how it frames my face without edges, i also like how it looks with edges. I think you look very beautiful withoutthem sleeked and I'm sure if you ever choose to do it it'll also look very pretty.

My grandparents would always get mad at me for not slicking down my edges, but I just found it unnecessary and didn’t want to do it. I gel them down when I want to do space buns or a slick bun. I prefer to use Murray’s (?) pomade now if I want to get rid of flyaways. I find that gel does dry my hair out with prolonged use over time.

Hii!! Could you give us tips on how to detangle in a way to prevent breakage? And do you use a comb or you finger detangle? I’d love to hear your method!❤️

Sometimes I use it, sometimes I don't. Really depends on my mood. However, I do not gel my ENTIRE hair, not my top hair for buns(just like you, I simply tie it down with a scarf and it looks neat and sleek without gel!); not my partitions for braids; and not when I'm doing natural hair twists either... It's always just the front-most edges (because they're too short and tender to be braided) and after having braids for a week or 2, they begin to look old at the front, so sometimes I gel it to make the braids look "fresh" and new. And I think that makes a difference. If you're doing a sleek bun, you'll need to reapply gel every other day but you're not washing your hair, hence the buildup and crustiness. However, I (inevitably) wash my front-most edges every time I'm taking a bath, it's just how I wash my face. So I never have buildup. Also, I always oil my edges, whether I'm sleeking them or not and I've realised that prevents the white stuff gel brings. So yeah... in moderation, I think gel is okay. Especially if you're going to wash it out. But in your entire hair? That's risky because you're probably going to leave in it and just keep reapplying. Maybe the other problem is the brushes for laying edges... if the gel doesn't do it, those edge brushes will most likely break your edges ( you can evidently see your hair strands in the brush later) so you gotta take care on that, too.

Oh, and I also agree that there's a plethora of styles that arguably look BEST without sleeked edges. Like the afro, and wash and gos too Some people also have no edges, as in they have a full head of hair from the very front of their hairline. So even what would ordinarily constitute their edges is hair just as long as the rest of their head hair. These people are lucky because not only can all their hair be braided, but they never have fly-away hairs making their style look old. So people like this IMO never need gel, even with braids. I wouldn't use it if my hair grew like that, but it doesn't. There's about half an inch from the front of ny hairline that just doesn't grow long, it's soft like a baby's hair and even if it's braided, it always slides out of the braids in a few days... so if I want to revamp my braids, I'll usually sleek it down - NOT because I'm trying to look like anyone, but just because I want my braids to look neat and fresh.

I don't care for the look, so I never gel down my edges. I also try not to do too many things that go against my hair in it's natural state. For example I don't buy products with the purpose to make my hair look shiny. My hair is dull in appearance, so I just let it be.
