your first point about mastery is so true. i never understood how people could say natural hair is so difficult. one of the reasons i went natural is actually because the maintanence of relaxed hair was VERY difficult for me. so going natural was pretty much the same level of work, but now i can appreciate my real beauty. now that' i've spent time perfecting (mastering) my wash and twist days, i cant imagine going back to relaxed to regular wig wearing!!

I hate that this is the sentiment, especially for us type 4s. I hear so many people say “well I’m just going back to relaxers because my hair is too unruly!” And as someone who has just started on a length retention journey, it definitely requires discipline but it’s a journey for a reason. It takes time. I transitioned heat damaged hair for a year, and that was a journey as well, it’s all a learning process.

I've figured out my hair, and it's a breeze, and I can handle my mom's hair no problem, but I'm still trying to get her to stop referring to mine as "difficult". It's a process, but we're getting there. (She does the best cornrows though!)

You’re literally putting into words my experience right now! I grew waist length Locs over 11 years, only to walk away with a huge bald spot in the middle of my head, because my hair was falling out. I didn’t know how to take care of my hair. I thought I did, but I was clueless. On top of that I didn’t love my hair. Growing up believing my 4c hair was a curse I never connected with it. Now after the big chop, and KZread University, I know what I need to do! I also love and appreciate my 4c hair and bald spot more then ever! I respect my hair for not taking any kind of treatment. She must be loved and respected!!❤

Can I just say I hate having to master my hair just so I’m not extremely frustrated trying to take basic care of it and not have it look awful. Getting mastery of things is hard as hell and I know it’s the only way to get like good easy results but the process fuckin sucks. Especially when you just want to get on with your day and not be an amateur and struggling. And your hair is just one of many things to be taking care of. Trying to get used to it and keep learning and not cut it off has been a drain on my mental health but I’m gonna keep going cause it’s gonna get worse if I don’t keep learning

@Caila Williams. I went natural after 40 years of wearing perm. It is still a learning experience for me. I wear roller sets instead of the wash n go's. The roller sets come out beautiful. I learn so much on you tube from my curly haired sisters. I will never put that creamy crack back in my hair. I went natural 4 years ago because I wanted to get corn rows. Since I have been doing the roller sets, I have not gotten my corn rows yet! I say all this to say, be patient with yourself. Remain open to learn. It will get easier. I look forward to wash day and seeing what style I can create. Hang in there sis..

This is a great video for those beginning their journey, or those still struggling even though they are OG's. I was fortunate to be raised by a mom, aunties, and grandmothers who were all natural and loved their natural hair. So I learned how to easily care for my hair. I found the LHCF years ago while searching for "long afro hair." I was looking for a group that wore their hair long because it seemed that not a lot of people within the African diaspora chose to wear long hair. What I found initially was the LHCF that wasn't exactly what I was looking for, but I stayed for the community that developed there. Although there are still quite a few who are trying to figure out their haircare there has been progress, and we are seeing more waist length and beyond hair on those who want it. We still have a ways to go especially with the mindset. I believe that in time most will understand their hair and not think it is difficult to care for.

I'm guessing you're a born-again believer as I hear you sharing on knowledge, understanding and wisdom. Word! Loving your content recently. I'm still experimenting and finding out what my hair loves. I've got most things nailed down, but now I need to cut down the time I take to do my hair. Wash day is literally a whole day because I always retwist but I'm moving to weekly washing and more simpler and quicker protective styles.

Hi ifshesopleases I’ve been struggling with my hair and I don’t know what to do. My hair is severely damaged by split ends and I’ve lost so much length and damage from it but I just can’t bring myself to cutting my hair, it took me so long to get to where I am is there a way I can continue retaining length while nursing it back to health, if you could please help it would mean everything im so desperate at this point, anyone please.

Start by using olaplex no. 3 Then see if you can find a stylist you trust to help you remove the damage while retaining as much length as possible.

If you don’t want to trim it, then your best bet is protective styling until it grows out. But honestly, the sooner you cut it the better for your hair growth. I wish there were another way!

Sephora. There is no way to have healthy hair if you dont trim the dead/split ends. I do mine myself since I have been natural. Buy yourself a pair of hair cutting shears. Do not use regular scissors. I just dust my ends every 2 to 3 months as needed. Your hair will thank you and it will grow when you get rid of the dead parts. 💚
