The GVM or Gross Vehicle Mass is the total weight of a vehicle including fuel, passengers, luggage, accessories, etc. Exceeding this weight limit is illegal and would cause your insurance company to void your policy.
A GVM Upgrade increases the load carrying capacity of a vehicle, and involves replacing the suspension components, as well as completing the necessary paperwork to certify the upgrade, which in my case, is legal throughout Australia.

My Navara's Tare weight, ie. what it weighs sitting in the showroom, with no passengers or accessories and 10L of fuel in the tank is 1978kg.
The Curb weight, which is the same configuration as the Tare, but with a full tank of fuel is 2038kg.
The Navara's GVM is 2805kg, giving it a Payload of 827kg.
When you start to install accessories, these items become part of the payload:
towbar = 30kg
bullbar = 90kg
winch = 29kg
145L long range fuel tank = 135kg of fuel (tare weight includes 10L)
Me & Mrs Rusty = 130kg
Total = 414kg for the above items.
After swapping the wellbody for the aluminium tray and 3 door canopy, and with the towbar, bullbar, my tools and long range fuel tank with 50L in it, the Navara weighed in at 2400kg.
With a GVM of 2805kg, I've only got 405kg for things like:
Me & Mrs Rusty = 130kg
2 Engels loaded with food = 80kg
95L of fuel to fill the tank (from the 50L in it when weighed) = 95kg
So that adds another 305kg, bringing my vehicle weight to 2705kg...leaving me only 100kg for things like camping gear, cooking gear, recovery gear, etc and now I'm overloaded...and illegal.
With the upgrade, my GVM is now 3215kg, giving me a 410kg increase in my load carrying capacity.
The Navara's GCM or Gross Combination Mass is the total allowable weight of the vehicle plus whatever I'm towing, ie. camper trailer, caravan, etc. and this weight is 5805kg.
The maximum braked towing capacity is 3000kg.
