Why I choose top end protective for beer league

Спорт

Diving into a recent check from behind and the reasons I always get top end shoulder pads.
Beer league maybe has no hitting, yet for some reason idiots do it anyway

Thanks for the insights; You've convinced me from your experiences to go expensive/protective/light instead of cheap/unprotective/light. I always thought the only option was expensive/protective/heavy but you've enlightened me and now I know they make expensive/protective/light! And the gear should last a while so it's a worthy investment.

That is absolutely true. I think the same way about my kids gear. I understand how some will cheap out on the protective since it's going to be small soon, but you can always sell them again to someone. I want my daughter to be safe on the ice and that is something I'm willing to invest and cheap out on something else that doesn't matter as much.

I used to be a beer league goalie and was constantly getting pucks, sticks, elbows and knees to the head. I had to give it up when my balance gave out, which was later determined to be from repetitive concussions. Beer league is no walk in the park, there are lots of jerks in it. I played in the ASHL here in Toronto when it first started out in the 90's. But I mostly played in The True North Hockey League though.

If you take your safety seriously you should be wearing a cage or a full shield. I will never understand why someone who doesn't get paid to play hockey plays with a visor or nothing at all. It takes practically no force for someone with a hockey stick to mess up your face, not worth the risk imo. Other than that I agree with you.

My dad played in a beer league while I was still too young to play in their league ( even though I was better than almost everyone on the ice ), and he wasn’t wearing shoulder pads, and this league allowed light checking, and he busted his shoulder bad, and dislocated it. It never healed properly and until the day he died his shoulder bone stuck up and outwards and always gave him problems and pain. He then gave me all his gear he had left. Mostly roller hockey stuff and I still skate in his old Mission blades, and his Mission ice skates broke around the the time his shoulder got messed up. It was their newest ice skates and a puck went straight into the blade holder in the back and got stuck in there. He was so mad because they were expensive af, and supposed to be the next big thing. Then Bauer eventually bought them out, and they didn’t make much ice hockey gear after those skates etc. But I’ve always loved their roller gear especially the skates. Mine are over 20 years old, the boot is all busted up, but they still work great. Only issue is you can no longer buy the hardware spacers sets for the wheels and bearings so mine are mostly held together by 5/8ths bolts and nuts lol.

Yup. You never know when some lunatic, who can't tell the difference between beer league and game 7 of the Cup finals, is going to show up and do his best Marty McSorley impression.

Are you in a hitting league? Those hits were ridiculous. Beer league is actually the most dangerous kind of hockey, I'm serious. Like you said, some people we play with are not stable

Can't believe we were having this conversation and I just got hit from behind and I smashed head first into the boards. The good thing was my elbows took most of the impact but the bad thing was I forgot my elbow pads 🤦🏻‍♂️ FML. Needless to say but I grabbed buddy in a heartbeat and made him leave in not the nicest way

@@beerleaguebumhockeyreviews Betterq quality, much more protection, different foams, built in shot blockers, additional protection, an array of different palms. For a hockey gear review channel, it's remarkable that you say "retail" gloves are fine. Guarantee you'll never go back if you pick up a nice pair of pro stocks. Some Flyers mitts would go with your jersey.

@LongTermCap I don’t like prostock equipment for a number of reasons. Wierd set ups. Availability, different builds and finding what you like after the first time. I stick with retail because it’s hard to review something like a prostock glove that 1 out of 1000 would even have. Hockey gear itself is not a view heavy niche so I won’t be putting my views lower by reviewing something no one has or can repeat. If you like prostock good on you but from a view and relatability view point it’s not worth me reviewing and to give information on. I’ll give you my one example years ago I purchased a stick from the Vancouver Canucks pro stock store, stick was incredible. Can’t remember the build. But it was a bieksa. Curve was wack but I could shoot so hard. Nothing at the time compared. Bieksa was traded that was the end couldn’t find his stick without either being used on eBay ( no thanks ) and eventually not at all. Went back to my retail stick because in end that’s not sustainable
