dear Taimur , it is a very great lecture & in fact part of your autobiography ... i am a teacher at govt college since 2003.. in MA previous our professor asked what are ur future plans.. some class fellows were saying i will be doing css, etc etc.. only i replied ' i will try to become a good teacher'. professor replied that we observe that those who don't become anyone else, then last option is teaching... i said.. sir you have ignored the word "good". i am very lucky to be a teacher... good or bad.. my students will judge..

I think the best we can do is to engender in students the realization that the job of the teacher isn't that of baby-sitting them but to teach them honestly and professionally. Of course, the normal human warmth shouldn't be excluded from the teaching-learning interaction but at the same time both teacher and students should abide by an ethics that helps students to be (and grow into) responsible, independent, and self-reliant human beings and the teacher to be respectful of students' choice and inclination, and to accomplish the job within the available resources (including time and her/his own psychological energy).

Salam Prof, Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experience of teaching and learning. It was pleasure listening to you. I have two questions What are your thoughts on giving confidence to the child? If the teacher shows belief the pupil can go an extra mile . What about importance of remembering facts? Does it not help in solving MCQs and EMQs?

  • @Taimur_Laal

I think real confidence is the knowledge that with patience and hard work, every problem can be overcome. That intellectual stamina is what we need to develop. Holt is trying to explain that we should not praise children for results. We should rather praise them for untiring effort. Its not the results that matter, it is the hard work and effort that should be rewarded.

Yes something do need to be committed to memory (like arithmetic tables). These things can be made into games or songs. And most importantly, students need to understand why memorising these tables is good for them. What can they do with them (for instance work out sports averages etc). Without a mental map of arithmetic tables, it is not possible to do mental math.

Great talk Professor, but you sound overly romantic and idealistic. In the real world, where you have to deal with a variety of traits and propensities, the only thing that works with students is a sympathetic, helping, and encouraging attitude towards them coupled with the expectation from them of a sensible and responsible behaviour. Until you have some kind of godly capabilities, you can't mollycoddle them endlessly and at the same time do justice with your job. And it makes sense that they should be rewarded only for the effort they are putting into the task of learning, at some point you have to put a cap on it for how can then you distinguish the one that, out of intrinsic motivation, is putting the same amount of effort and is also doing it right from the one that is only making failed attempts. Also, a lot of failures result not from the attitude of the teacher but the social and cultural conditions in which students are embedded. Ideally, it should be Socrates or Plato style of teaching and learning where teachers and students participate by their own motivation and don't have to comply by a prescribed course syllabus and exam schedule required by school administrators but alas that is nowhere the case and you have to go by the rules and regulations of the specific academic environment.
