the point here is that you can learn to calm yourself down to a point, because panicking while drowning is the worst thing to do. Granted most people who drown because they can't swim, and then panic.

so, this is where you're wrong. if no oxygen gets to the brain after about 2 mins, you're brain damaged. Freedivers oxygenate their entire systems with the breathe up, then full their lungs to capacity before doing a pool breath hold (static breath hold). Meaning that oxygen is still getting to the brain for several minutes. The issue is that CO2 builds and your limbs are starved making your brain send signals for you to breathe. I'm a freediver myself. Certified Intermediate with PFI. the body is capable of amazing things man.

Hes just saying the reflex that causes you to gasp for air is caused by your body's reflex to purge C02 when it builds up and then take in oxygen.

Otherwise they couldnt be free divers. Even if the sports put stress on your body, they are still 10 times more healthy than the general public.

Once in the middle of history class finished a test far earlier than everyone else so I decided to try to hold my breath for as long as possible. I took 30-40 seconds to relax then started a timer on my phone. I held my breath for 2 minutes and 45 seconds. I think one thing that really helped me with this was that, at this time, I had been playing clarinet for over 4 years .

I know how to do that lung packing thing, I didn't know that was something divers do, but I definitely knew it helped before holding my breath. My parents used to worry about me because when I would play in the pool with my siblings to find coins I would be under way longer lol. Something about slowly drifting looking for coins is so soothing to me, all I could hear was gentle water movements and my heartbeat. I also used to just sit underwater and meditate or look at the sky so they thought I was drowning 🤣

I think the stimulus (the one where cold water touches the face and thus the heart rate is decreased) evolved during the winter, this helps animals hibernate, but also this might be helpful when an organism is drowning or flowing down a river, if the heart rate is decreased then the rate of breathing is also decreased ever so slightly.
