Why His Patek Lost £6,550

Join at Watchtrader & Co as we buy and sell luxury watches in our store.
Our first customer has an elegant Patek Philippe Calatrava reference 6119R. This model features a rose gold case measuring in at 39mm and is just 8mm thin. The silvery lightly grained dial sits on top of a manual wind movement that is decorated to an exceptional standard as you would expect from Patek. The sapphire caseback allow you to observe the finest watchmaking in all of its glory. The watch is fitted with brown alligator strap. Jon looks to make an offer to the client to achieve the best return upon selling the watch. If we can price it right in the market, we can’t see this model hanging around for long.
While in store, the gent does consider a Rolex Submariner Bluesy, comparing the current 41mm version against the previous generation 40mm. There is a notable saving to be had by option for the older model. We also take a look at the 116500LN steel panda Daytona.
Josh takes a look at a Rolex Explorer 39mm mk.2 for a customer looking to liquidate part of his collection. The watch has clearly been well worn and enjoyed which is great to see, however we do need to take this into account when making an offer to buy it. He also has a Cartier Santos in the medium size with a white dial and despite its 35mm size, it wears larger than you might expect due to its square shape and integrated bracelet design. The Omega Seamaster diver is also for sale however this isn’t the latest version as it has a steel casebook and a simpler dial without the wave engraving. On his wrist is the Grand Seiko Snowflake, probably one of the most well known models in their line-up.
We have heard that Rolex gold pieces are due for a price increase on June 1st (at the time of post this video we can confirm it’s true) Stuart and Harry discuss the difference in retail and market price for a selection of gold models in store. We question what this could mean for the availability and market price of pre-owned precious metal watches as we move further into 2024.

Absolutely disgusting they have that 39mm explorer 2019 online for £6,950 . And they will only offer £4,000 even with £500 spent on it there making £2,500 that’s over a 50% markup don’t sell or buy from these chancers rip off merchants and that john is a right clown !

That’s business. Buy for a dollar, sell for two. This business has a platform to sell watches with a massive reach to customers. People can always do things themselves, from building a house to handling their own legal and financial affairs, but the time and risk of doing so is often not worth it.

I can't believe they held him at gun point to do it! Oh no wait. They just gave him an offer and let him walk away. Looking at eBays completed listings these are struggling to sell for £5.5k in better condition. If it is a bit beat up like he said he might get £5k on eBay. Minus fees that's £4,325.

I think a lot of the comments here are completely misplaced. First of all these guys have a business to run, they are running it for profit, not for charity or for your entertainment. As such they have to pay salaries for multiple staff, rent, rates, overheads. Seems everyone forgets the cost of their inventory - I don't know how that's financed but if you add up the total value of their watches it's a staggering sum which is either lent by some rich investor for a rate of return or by a bank. Point is these employees didn't wake up one day with 1 million pounds to spend on watches. The watch you are all angry about is a cheap rolex (not cheap in money terms but cheap in terms of rolex price points), so calling out percentage markups is as dumb as that comment. If they actually operated on a 50% markup then the Caltrava would be 40k etc. In summary get back into the real world commentators......the bloke who used his explorer as a football is disappointed not to get top dollar, sure, but he doesn't have to sell it to them and he did not sell it to them. They don't want it because it's a beat up watch, and they have a better one in stock already. In a falling market where they run a business for profit with substantial overheads their pricing was/is appropriate.

I can’t understand dealers that are shafting customers at both ends of the deal. For me do your research and take your custom elsewhere as this model is not geared up for repeat custom and loyalty. They know what the watch their selling stands then at and if there are getting the price they’ve asked then happy days. To nail your client on part exchange just doesn’t sit right with me and customers should vote with their feet. After a polish and tidy up no one has an issue with then getting a drink out of the deal but to be trying to nail people for over 2k is a disgrace!!

The calatrava is the best patek imo, i bought it in switzerland, it was the right size for me, and it had entirely hand finished movement. Better than the annual calendar. Now, I'm curious to see how much it's worth today, so I'm planning to do a little research.

Why do you think the platinum pieces cost so much more than full gold pieces? Yes, platinum is a rarer material, but it's also a lot cheaper than gold. Gold is circa £59 a gram whereas plat is around £26 a gram.

  • @JammyDodger45

Platinum is much harder to work with than gold. Also it's 'off-cuts' can't be reused without being refined (anyone can smelt gold) so it's labour unit cost is that much higher.
