Why He Made An Obvious Mistake | Katana Swordmaster Reacts to "Twilight Samurai" Fighting Scenes

Спорт

Twilight Samurai is one of the most famous samurai movies in Japan. It’s the story of a poor samurai, Seibe, who works hard and fights for his family and love. The famous Sanada Takayuki performs the main character, so the fighting scenes are popular for being quite realistic and not too “movie flashy.” But is that true or not? Let’s ask Seki Sensei.
So today, Seki sensei, the 22nd headmaster of Kobudo Asayama Ichiden Ryu with 400 years of history, will react to Twilight Samurai's two major fighting scenes. By watching this video, you will learn that even the authentic-looking combat action in this film may be a little unnatural from a martial arts perspective. Especially Seki Sensei’s opinion on the controversial last scene was very interesting, so please watch this video until the end. By the way, tickets for the 3-day training camp in Japan held by Seki Sensei and Let's ask Shogo are now on sale! Check out our Patreon page for more information!

    There are several amazing fights in the cartoon "Avatar - The Legend of Aang". In special, a double sword VS spears fight featuring some forms that resemble A LOT like bushido in S2-E7. It would be amazing to see sensei's reaction to a cartoon that is famous for showing several martial arts in a fantasy context.

    Great analysis by Seki Sensei and Shogo as always. As for the last scene, I do agree with the "luring the eyes" assessment. I would also add though, that Yogo had been drinking and was mostly likely exhausted from "hiding." He also was blinded by his pride and anger, and when the chance to "strike" Seibei down seemed apparent, he was not thinking clearly at all. “The opportunity of defeating the enemy is provided by the enemy himself.”

  • @agricolaurbanus6209

    I think Seibei provoked this mistake by cowering down at the right distance from the door entry, if consciously or by lucky chance. Standing in a door frame is never good with a sword imho.😉

  • @kenjutsukata1o1

    @kenjutsukata1o1

    Yeah, I'd say there were a ton of factors that would make that mistake very plausible. As you said, he'd been drinking, plus he'd been hiding out in that house for days with likely very little sleep (if any). He'd also already fought at least one person we saw (who got smoked), so he was drunk, depressed, exhausted, sleep-deprived, terrified, angry, and bleeding from multiple wounds. It's frankly impressive how well he fought under such conditions.

  • @blacklake13
    @blacklake136 ай бұрын

    In an actual fight, when exhausted and injured, people will be increasingly inclined to make mistakes. I believe in the first fight, no stick fighting moves were used because Iguchi wished to make a point about his superior skills specifically with the sword. In that context, using non-sword techniques would have worked against his point. I also think the argument could be made that he deliberately waited for his opponent to pick up the sword before hitting him on the head for a similar reason: It was more humiliating that way.

    This was my take as well. The scene where twilight talks to Yogo hilights how Yogo was already in a very weekend state, having been held up in his house for a few days or more without food. The malnutrition and his frustration from feeling insulted contributed to his lack of awareness as the fight goes on.

    I agree with your assessment on the first fight, that was my take too. In addition to the demonstration of superior skills aspect, Sebei was challenged to a sword duel, so using something other than sword techniques would have undermined his victory in multiple ways. And there's also the aspect that the samurai greatly outranked him for that last bit. Seibei very much did not want to actually harm him, and wanted to give him every chance to not get clobbered. In a real fight yeah, you don't let them get their sword before striking, but in those circumstances he wasn't going to go for a knock-out blow unless he was absolutely forced to, as the consequences could have been severe. He didn't want any witnesses to be able to (truthfully) claim that Sebei used unnecessary force. The last thing the poor man needed was to be forced to commit seppuku when he had his daughters to look after. I don't know how much context Seki-sensai was given, though, so his assessments aren't wrong in a void.

    Yogo's demise is really interesting! I really enjoy all the theories around it. He's mentioned to be a dangerous swordsman and has already killed other retainers sent after him. At the point Seibei finds him, he's been holed up in the house for several days. He's been drinking heavily and likely not sleeping much while the lord's retainers stake him out. Despite this, he's still a dangerous opponent. There's a short moment which isn't included in this video: Where Yogo prepares to attack Seibei through a doorway, briefly glances up at the ceiling and doorframe, then decides to step through the doorway to give himself more headroom. So he's definitely aware of his sword sticking in the ceiling at the beginning of the fight! It seems like he's still aware at the end of the fight too: He doesn't look up, but he kneels before trying to make his final strike. It's not enough though. It's been a protracted and chaotic duel, and Yogo has been cut several times at this point. He's likely in pain and bleeding heavily along with the other impairments that would've made the fight difficult from the outset! Personally, I think he might just have made a genuine, fatal mistake in a seriously difficult situation.

  • @jonlannister345

    @jonlannister345

    3 ай бұрын

    @@piotrmalewski8178 There's a problem with thrusting in unarmoured combat in that the sword is not a magical death stick. If you stab someone with your sword, they can then swing or thrust back at you. I think there may be a Samurai film where this is shown in a way; where an amateur swordsman runs his sword through a master swordsman, because he is only concerned with attack, not defense. The master then immediately cuts him down while his sword is inside him delivering a mortal wound in turn. When the sword is inside the opponent, then it cannot be lifted to defend against the opponent's attacks. That is a really key thing to remember though; It's not difficult to thrust or cut, but it is difficult to do so without being killed.

  • @piotrmalewski8178

    @@jonlannister345 Possible, yet what about pain reaction. A lot if not most curved swords were compromise cut and thrust swords and in times and places where curved swords were most popular, there were still masters who prefered completely straigh blades.

  • @stefanlvkc7986

    I always thought Yogo's mistake was due to 1) he's bleeding out from quite a few wounds at that point and 2) IIRC he hadn't slept in 2-3 days because people were trying to kill him and he was fighting them off here and there throughout those days. It's been a while since I've seen Twilight Samurai, so I may be remembering wrong.

    THANK YOU for reviewing my FAVORITE film! I remember seeing Tasogare Seibei in the theater when it was released in the US. I went because of the reviews and there were only 5 people in the theater. At the end I sat there in tears and just sat so appreciative of the experience and story Sanada-San and Yoji Yamada brought to the screen. I just sat still for 20 minutes afterwards. I was fortunate to catch the other two films in Yamada's samurai trilogy, Kakushi Ken (The Hidden Blade), and Bushi No Ichibun (Love and Honor). The latter films didn't disappoint one bit but Tasogare Seibei holds a special place after all these years.

From what I gathered, Seki Sensei says wakizashi is used with the body sideways in a duel. Also, I have been looking for a full tutorial on the wakizashi with Iaijutsu and specifically kenjutsu with body sideways technical situations. This is like I mentioned earlier like a rapier sword accept you must get close with Wakizashi. For Seki Sensei, what are some counter techniques with the opponent when he has the advantage of an offensive strike and you can't get close in a standing duel? Where do you stand and how would you approach in that situation?

    In the first duel, it was my thought that Seibei chose to only use wakazashi techniques to add legitimacy to his performance in the duel, as his opponent was already insulted when he brought the wooden stick. In the final duel, Yogo has been wounded and he has not slept in several days, so I had thought that the combination of exhaustion, adrenaline and shock from the wound could result in his tactical error. My thoughts are only based as a fan of chanbara, and greatly appreciate sensei’s perspective. Domo arigato gozaimasu.

    Interesting that you make note of the single handed stance. In rapier fighting, the advantages are length, the light weight of the blade, the flexibility, and the hand guard protection, but this all comes with a major disadvantage in power and penetration against even lightly armored opponents. The Katana has far more power, but isn't as fast and as a two handed weapon it loses its range advantage. Using a single handed shorter blade against a two handed heavier blade is a great way to counter this.

    In iai and kenjutsu looking into the opponent's eyes can cause one to be lured away, as Sensei says. In close combat, with different ma ai, looking into opponent's eye can work for you. I studied ShinShin Ryu, Sekiguchi Ryu Higo Den, which are almost the same and Muso Shinden Ryu. The principle called "looking at far mountain", which is popular in Kendo seemed to be the best. My sixty years of Judo and Jujutsu gave me a different feeling. When closing with an opponent, or engaging in randori in Judo, looking into the opponent's eyes seemed to make me the "cat" in Sensei's explanation. My opponents were very disturbed by my looking into their eyes and often made serious mistakes. My experience is long, but I was never a champion in any competition, except at a regional level, so I could be mistaken.

    Big differences between movies and reality. In reality a fight should be finished as quickly as possible but this would make a very short film 🎥 . When fighting remember- "If your going to dine with the devil ? You should use a very long spoon".

    I thought his name was Sanada Hiroyuki, because that's how most people here in America know him. That, and he has "THAT GUY" status for an actor many people recognize in a lot of films even though they can't always remember his name. Some people may also remember when he went by Henry sanada from his younger years.

    The mistakes in the final fight can be chalked up to stress to me. In martial arts the stress of a real fight or even sparring can make you make mistakes. Even more so if you're tired and losing blood.

    Maybe not a Samurai movie BUT, I'd love to see his REACTION to the light saber battles in the StarWars movies. These fight scenes are often choreographed my very experienced martial artists like Ray Park who played Darth Maul. He's been a Kung Fu practitioner since 1983 and brought a LOT of his expertise to the scenes he choreographed and participated in...he even trained the other actors.

    Yogo was just tired IMO and screwed up. Seibe also likely over acted his defeat so Yogo would be careless by over estimating his situation. The dude's face is green.

    It is interesting and not a good thing… people in Kendo do Kodachi Kendo Kata without to understand how to use Kodachi.

    There are a lot of great fights I enjoyed in 「壬生義士伝」that I think would be great to receive feedback from Seki sensei.
