In Brazil, lot of old churchs has a roof painted as a heaven. The reason is that: in church, mass or celebrations, is an antecipation of heaven's experience.

As a kid I went to church every week, it was in the early sixties. Sometimes we went to the "High Mass" at 11AM, but my father preferred "Early Mass" at 7:30 AM. The people that attended High Mass were of a kind. World War II was over, and welfare slowly was increasing. Church and especially the High Mass was a place of gossip, whispered noise, and judgment. Did you well enough in our recovering economy? It wasn't such a long time since this war was over, and some ran that steeple chase a bit slower than did others. What about that old repaired coat the neighbor was wearing, just awkward wasn't it? And, speaking of, look at his shoes. It really was a shame that he was sitting there, among those fine people, who arrived in big cars, while the "shameless" neighbour came through the rain after a 2 hours walk. He'd got no car, he'd got no bike. He didn't even have an umbrella. So embarrassing to see him showing his poverty to the Allmighty! He was not supposed to join the after-mass coffee party. Of course he officially was invited, but he was simply ghosted. That was pretty much what High-Mass was about. I don't make this up. I was there, and it happened right before my eyes. But there was an Early Mass as well. down in the crypt. People who attended that mass had to wake up earlier. There was no noise, nobody whispered gossip in that half-dark crypt. Woolen coats smelled like rain. People were already silent, kneeling in prayer, before the bell rang to mark the beginning of the celebration.. Before the Eucharist there was this joyful moment: "Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you." People then shook hands, exchanging honest smiles, kind smiles, whishing each other a genuinely intended peace. Nobody was judgmental, people just prayed. The collected donations of those early few equalled the sum of the fine and definitely richer lot at the High Mass. I think my father did well, choosing to attend the Early Mass over the gossip-meeting.

Going to Mass by tradition is one thing; going by conviction is something else entirely. You want to go to Mass because you want to give time to Christ and ask Him to give you what He wants to give you. It's like going to visit a dear loved one; He greets you and invites you in to sit down and exchange words with Him. He wants to hear your heart speak. And like many important visits to loved ones, you end up at the table where you share additional intimacy by sharing a meal. In this case, He gives us his Body and Blood. Then we go forth to witness to our world around us. That is going to church by conviction. Praise to our Lord Jesus !

I guess I've been thinking of it all wrong, because when someone asks me why I go to church - although I know it is mainly because of the Eucharist - but to non-Christians, I have explained it like this: imagine you had a friend that whenever you asked a favor of him, he always tried to be there for you. But when he invited you to his house, you didn't feel like going (because it wasn't much fun), or you had other things you wanted to do. I accept his invite several times a week now, and am so glad he's still inviting me after all the years that I disappointed him.

Yes, it should be a taste of Heaven but could also a living hell: being neglected, ignored, isolated and rejected. We lost a very devoted brother this week who suffered from years of depression. Priests and those who run fellowships need proper training on how to handle people suffering from mental illness. I confess I mistreated people who recovered from mental illness back in school days. Frankly, none of us know how to deal with returning brothers and sisters after the treatment. We failed 20 years ago, we fail again today. May the Lord forgive us of our foolishness, selfishness, ignorance, indifferences etc. And may the Holy Spirit enlighten us with knowledge, wisdom, empathy to really make the Holy Communion the dining table where Jesus share Himself and nourish us, body, heart and soul. Amen.

Due to the 'current situation', all are welcome, and whilst it is not entirely to my taste, it is a joy every week to receive the Eucharist. The sisters have gone out of their way to make all us 'strangers' welcome, even making sure that I am greeted in English.

I am a devout catholic, I used to attend mass (almost everyday when I can) before the pandemic. I am not able to attend a single mass since the pandemic began and I live in a remote island in the Philippines (a tourism place). The logistics makes it impossible. I never had a prayed answered this year (2020), at least not by utility. Even the prayers that I DESPERATELY need. Even when I over-tithed by credit card:( I am stuck in a remote location and I LITERALLY missed my economic aid. God is not helping me either. I think that going to mass. Receiving the Holy Eucharist, Sacrament of Confession is VERY VERY important. Prayers and (over)-tithes does not seem to suffice that much. This is written Dec 27,2020.

I live in south carolina, and I attend mass on Sundays. Even during this pandemic. My church has 6 different hours of the day to attend holy Mass. Every other pew is blocked off so we are sitting 6 feet away from eachother. Most people wear masks. There's an overflow center adjacent, so if our church is at capacity, people can still watch the mass from a giant screen there and partake in the same holy eucharist. Our priests give us communion by hand not tongue, they use sanitizer when handling items, no wine or holy water right now for obvious reasons. There are lots of changes implemented to continue mass as safely as possible. If you are still flying on airplanes, going to school in person, or eating out at restaurants and gatherings, but are still not going to church for one hour a week using the "pandemic" as an excuse, then you need to reevaluate your priorities.

I've struggled with church during the pandemic. Before life got turned upside down, I was actively involved in music ministry- in one church (my home parish) I volunteered in the choir, and in another I was hired to play my violin for one weekend liturgy per week. As someone with musical talent, I have always enjoyed sharing my gift by adding to the music at liturgy. The pandemic has changed all of this, however. My diocese has limited the musicians at Mass to those who play piano/organ and (if necessary) a cantor. Additionally, the bishop has dispensed Catholics from attending Mass for the past year, although Mass at each of the parishes I am involved with have continued offering liturgy in person and streamed online. There are restrictions on how many can be in the church (as I'm sure there are in many other places), and despite this I have felt uneasy attending for personal health reasons. For Advent 2020 and for Lent 2021, I have resolved to stream weekend liturgy at home, as I have drifted during Ordinary Time. This has also made me question over the past few months that if going to Mass was only to sing or play violin, why was I even going? I've been Catholic my whole life, and even spent some time in religious formation as a young adult. I believe in everything the church offers, but not attending Mass in any form that has taken in the last twelve months hasn't left me wanting. I have hopes that my pendulum will soon swing back the other direction and I will feel inspired to attend again when the threat of covid ends.

Another inspiring sermon by a charismatic friar, and I want to believe and follow, I really do, but then a critical voice arises in my head telling me to curb my enthusiasm. If you look closely, you will see that fundamental reasons of why people stop going to the church remain unaddressed in this video. The speaker says (in paraphrase) that the motivation to attend the mass should be rooted in the desire to catch a glimpse of eternity, of what the life in heaven with God and the saints will be like. Exactly! And that's one of the main reasons why the attendance is dropping, especially among the younger generation: this vision of human destiny is rightfully unappealing because it is not true to who we are and what makes us human. Yes, it is good for us to have a sacred time at a place of worship once a week and to be involved in a loving community on a meaningful mission, but we also need to play, to create, to struggle, to explore, to have a trade, to learn new things, to face interesting challenges and to grow through them. Yet nothing from that list is on the offer in the traditional view of heaven. I wonder if Fr. Casey himself would find it boring after a while if there is nobody left to evangelize through KZread and nothing else to do but worship on and on and on. Perhaps, as St. Paul says, we will be raised entirely new creatures who would enjoy being so truncated, but who can blame us now in the present state for wanting to be more than perpetually agreeable, transfixed, asexual, worshipful, single-purpose automatons? But I still believe that Christianity can be saved from itself by developing more plausible and dignifying visions of eschatological fulfillment that would actually make people genuinely excited about. There are, of course, other reasons of the waning church attendance, too many to name in this comment.

Wow. That gives me a lot to think about! But I think heaven is where we find ourselves, in God. Or is it God, in ourselves? Either way, and perhaps both ways. Would you actually be bored if you discovered your Creator? It would be an endless love fest. Those of us who believe God is actually, physically present in the Eucharist receive a "taste" of that, here on Earth. You don't need to be a "perpetually agreeable, transfixed, asexual, worshipful, single-purpose automaton"; that's just how this package was presented to you. God loves you if you are none of those things. Find a relationship with God that isn't so surface.

@@LS-ei7xk I like your mystical take on it. Unfortunately, the package you quoted seems to be very strongly implied by the traditional imagery of heaven and continues to inform the popular perception. In particular, I take an issue with the exclusively church-worship analogy of life in God conveyed by the video and the Christian doctrines at large. You must admit that, no matter how spiritually filling, the Catholic Mass (and other Christian liturgies) has a limited focus and engages only a part of who we are. It is probably a good thing that Sunday services end after an hour or so and people move on to their daily lives where they meet their other important human needs . I contend that relying on any single analogy, even that of a theocentric love fest, truncates not only humanity but also divine possibilities. An endless love fest sounds quite hellish to me.

@@radiantedj3452 I see your point. And I shouldn't have used that term "love-fest". Shades of the 1960s, and yes, I guess it would be boring! Sorry. It would have to be more than that. But words are limiting. I agree that just focusing on words or actions without any experience of love to go with it would be tortuous or unfulfilling. So I guess that's why "hell" was invoked. I don't know-- I am a convert, and I had mystical experiences with the Eucharist. Otherwise, I probably wouldn't have converted, and I probably wouldn't bother.

  • @radiantedj3452

@@LS-ei7xk Although you are right about the limitation of words, no apologies are needed for using the word "love-fest". It is an apt description of what the Gospel of John, the Song of Songs, the Medieval mystics, and some big names in theology have talked about in reference to intimacy with God. In that tradition, I also believe that agape-love and eros should not be radically separated. In fact, it is a very appropriate description of my own religious experiences as well. I only had a problem with "endless" (in the sense of excluding other types of experience) and the exclusive preference for a single metaphor, even if it is something as awesome as the Eucharist. My point was simply that the fullness of existence in God ("heaven") is more adequately described by a varied range of mental states and activities. We should take our clues from Dante's "Paradiso," which in turn draws on rich traditions, where "heaven" is multi-layered and multi-faceted and involves not only direct encounters with God and other spiritual beings, but also an exciting adventure in the divine Cosmos. I just wish there were more sermons based on that. Furthermore, our metaphors for heaven should not be limited to Ancient and Medieval sources or even exclusively Christian ones. And even secular culture, with its breath-taking creativity, provides exciting pointers. Even in heaven, not everything is about God directly, which, paradoxically, is an expression of God's infinite kenotic generosity and respect for human freedom and individuality.Or at least I hope so. Anyway, thank you for this conversation and blessings on your spiritual journey!

It's like walking around eggshells trying to answer this. Given that a person has the appropriate Catholic formation (understanding of the celebration of the Eucharist, etc...) , And knowing first-hand attending mass can be boring sometimes but not always (who's guilty of having fallen asleep during homily 😅😅) or most everyone being tied up with work and family chores ... personally I love going to church, to pray, meditate with the Blessed Sacrament, time can actually fly in silence. Having observed other faiths doing their own Sunday services like Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church, Various Gospel Churches in the south, I noticed how even the young participate in their services wholeheartedly. other faiths have found a way to make their Sunday services upbeat, immersive, inviting and with no monotonous 20-minute homilies. Maybe us Catholics can do something to make going to church (for mass specifically) more inviting and more upbeat without diluting the essence of Eucharistic Celebration. maybe shorten homilies to 5 minutes or less by being direct to the point. Doing away with verbosity. I've attended Sunday masses that cover all that substantial taking about 20 minutes. It's actually refreshing, I can do all the mundane tasks of home and work life while being able to go to church several times a week! Like fr Casey said, "a taste of heaven"...it gives us the sustenance spiritually and temporally, to live. Going to church is non-negotiable.
