Ok, i feel triggerd. Dear Laura, please visit "the most boring city" in Germany. It's a 30 min drive to where the mountains start, 2 hours to the highest northern german mountain. There's at least one german brewery on the way with beer you obviously never tasted. If you want to go to the sea, it's also a 2 hours drive. You could take a route through the Heide-region, where you will barely see houses or civilisation. Ah, rocks, yes, we have them too, we call them Extersteine. Worth a visit. Especially during winter time. Not even 2 hours to get there. I won't say anything about cars .... because you already did. But, yes, the US has some great places to visit. Greetings from Hanover

In 1991 my husband and I drove all the way from San Francisco to Seaside along the coastal highway before we turned east towards Forest Grove where a friend and her husband went to university. This road trip was so unbelievably awesome - from the rainforest north of the California border to the wild rock formations along the coast. We spent a whole day in Seaside with our friend, getting saltwater taffies, and watching kites. On another day we visited a vineyard to discover that Oregonian wine is just as delicious as Palatinian wine. If I'd ever wanted to live somewhere in the US it wouldn't be Hawaii. California, or Florida. No, I'd choose Oregon, it's lovely.

Yeah, tell me about it ... A little more than 30 years ago I was invited to stay at the University of Oregon in Eugene. Oregon had not been on my map before that, because it was - and still is - off the beaten path for most Germans. But, boy, what a journey it was! One of the most beautiful states in one of the most beautiful regions, Oregon has so much to offer and I am not even talking about the marvels of the Oregon Coast, Crater Lake or Columbia River Gorge. All this, and a lot more, combined with the wonderful people of the Pacific Northwest easily convinced me that Oregon and the whole of Cascadia is the most beautiful area of the USA. But whenever friends ask me about where they should go and I recommend Oregon they are reluctant of trying their luck and end up - like the huge majority of tourists - in the Southwest.

The beautiful National Parks aren't everywhere. Most of the people in the U.S. live east of the Mississippi River (the half of the country that has plenty of fresh water) and most of the iconic National Parks are in the west. So most Americans experience those parks by flying out and renting a car, too. There are a few spectacular parks in the east (in the Appalachian mountains and around the Great Lakes), but the huge desert vistas with straight roads leading into the distance are all in the western half.

I was a couple times in the USA (AZ/NV/TX/GA/NC) and loved i but not wanted to live there. The most worse thing over there was the so called "sugar-covering" to almost all you said. Not mine at all. The landscape is so different in any region that was really amazing. People had been nice everywhere and it was always a great experience to me. If I must choose a region to live there I guess it would be Montana or Iowa. Boring, I know. but for me as german maybe the best place to stay at.

As Germans, we fly to the USA Southwest since 1996. Have been there for more than 20 times (only Corona did not let us fly). We have been in Oregon as well, we have been in Bend and - finally - we have also been at Smith Rock Statepark (not "Nationalpark", as your Girlfriend says). We have been there in late summer and there were many many people climbing(!) in the walls. Its a really beautifull park, not very well known. We never made it in Winter to Oregon, but we also had plenty of snow in Mai and June(!), especially in the (Californien) "Lassen Volcano Park". Cant wait to come back again....

From sunset strip, to universal studios, to Monterey, San Francisco, white water rafting, Yosemite NP, Lake Tahoe, Yellowstone NP, Grand Teton NP, Rodeo in Cody, horse riding in Badlands NP, crossed the great planes, Mt Rushmore and Crazy horse Monument, a weekend in Chicago with jazz club and a baseball game, to Niagara falls and finally to NY city where I spend 5 days in museums and at broadway shows…. You truely dont understand the "vastness" until you experience it. America IS vast to be sure, but theres also areas of extreme desolation. Im from Kansas here in America, so im used to wide open spaces. Nothing but open prairies and farms for hundreds of miles, but there are areas in the deserts and high plains where the feelings of desolation really kick in. You dont see people, cars, buildings, powerlines, trees etc. for hours at a time. Being an otr ( *over the road* driver in an18 wheeler truck) spends weeks from home, a load (freight) can send you across the country and you get paid to do it! Its a geographically beautiful country and im blessed to live here...even WITH the modern stupidty. But then again, i dont spend much time staring at a screen! I get to stare at the horizon! It has no politics or agendas of any kind..just God's country. P.S.-- dont do the gimmicky NYC...LA...MIAMI thing. Those places are whole other little countries of their own.

I love Oregon. We spent our first vaccation there to escape the Florida heat. Fell in love with Portland, soooo different people than in FL. Enjoyed silver Falls Park, Bend, crater Lake and Bandon Beach. Have fun Laura - and I get it, i havve never been into beer in D, but loved the Microbrewerys. Fortunately there is a growing number of independen tsmall breweries now, that can create a decent IPA.

There are four reasons why traveling, especially traveling around, was very attractive in the U.S. in the 1990s: It was very cheap. Rental cars were cheap. Gasoline was very cheap. And, - motels (e.g. Motel 6) were cheap, - and they often had two king-size beds, which is very convenient for a family with two children, who thus only need one room. A comparable "road-trip" in Europe was hardly possible because of the hotel situation. In the time before internet and smartphone spontaneous hotel booking was hardly possible. In the U.S., on the other hand, you could see from a distance via neon signs whether a motel still had beds or was fully booked.

I've driven the Oregon Coast from Astoria to the California border. Its almost beauty overload! I mean for hundreds of miles its one stunny view after another. I spent the night in Astoria and Bandon during the trip. Astoria was really interesting with its long history and the Columbia River is amazing there. Bandon was nice and quiet and the beach there has lots of those large rocks sticking up out of the sand. Very pretty. Hey Nick, I'm not sure if you had the Gladiator in 4WD. Its a part time system and if you don't have it engaged its just 2WD (and rear wheel drive at that - worst traction). It should have easily been able to handle that road you were on with a little snow.

Seeing the state and national parks in the Winter is a whole other experience! They change with the seasons, and all are beautiful in their own way. In many ways, I think folks from other countries appreciate our parks more than Americans. Every time I visit Zion, Bryce or Arches I hear a wide variety of foreign languages spoken. Mostly Asian and European. I suspect that many people think of the US as the West - kinda like Americans think all of Germany looks like Bayern lol. I have family in Oregon - beautiful state and good folks in general. And yeah, I think folks overlook Oregon and opt for the Mountain West states and Cali when vacationing on that side of the country. Great job representing your state - and your home nation I may add.

Dude, there are almost 1500 different brewerys in Germany, more than 600 only in Bavaria. Most of them follow their own receipe in terms of how much they put in of every ingredient, where those ingredients are from (especially Hopfen or hops tastes way different depending on soil, sun exposure, temperature and altitude) and which water they use. Bavaria itself has 4000 different brands of beer, Germany as a whole 6000. And while most of them taste pretty much the same, depending on your definition there are 25 to 40 different sorts of beer, so to each their kind. Beer tradition is strongly regional in Germany. Hell, Spezial, Weißbier, dunkles Weißbier, Dunkelbier, Schwarzbier, Festbier, Kölsch, Export, Lager, Berliner Weiße, Fastenbier, Starkbier, Rauchbier... they taste so different, you would not believe they are all made from the same two plants and water only (as the law she is refering to = Reinheitsgebot) and maybe yeast in some sorts. I think your girlfriend never bothered trying them...
