Why Gentlemen Should Polish Their Own Shoes

Shoe polishing is both luxurious and frugal.
HongKongTatler.com heads to The Armoury in Central, Hong Kong, to learn the art of shoe polishing from Ethan Newton, co-founder of the artisanal clothiers.

    "After six months the shoe falls apart". I read and hear this type of comment by clothes horses all the time and it is utter bollocks. Unless you wear the shoes or clothes in a way that they are not designed for even inexpensive items will last a many times longer than that.

    I bought my first pair of Allen Edmonds because I appreciate quality, craftsmanship, and the longivety of the shoe. But what bothers me is when a lot of videos, such as this, says cheap shoes fall apart after 6 months or even a year. I bought a pair of Rockports at Macy's for $100. 7 years later, I'm still wearing them. They lasted me 6 years before the sole cracked in half. I can still wear them, but only in dry conditions.

    Agree about shoeedges, but in generall, shoetrees, renovature, creame, hard vax and good laces. Daily maintance 30 seconds goes a long way, and a few versetile quality shoes, 20/80 rule for the win 🥇and you must be in the upper quartile.

    not sure that your shoes will appreciate on long term ;) Especially if you use only wax and you never cream your shoes. Kiwi is just synthetic crap, Saphir is made from natural products and the leather loves it.

    Have you ever use SKUFF PROTECTANT on your leather shoes? Heard it last longer then regular wax and protect better. What are your toughts on this ?!

  • @TheWalrus0608
    @TheWalrus06088 жыл бұрын

    Polish, or any sticky material, may look your shoe look nice, but it attracts dust and dirt. Dust and dirt remove moisture from leather and can act as an abrasive where your shoe folds. Of course, the abrasive action is minimized (or negated) at the toes and heels. I don't see the point in applying polish or conditioner to the soul. Anything that makes the soul softer will cause it to wear down faster than it needs to., akin to softer compound tires. Saphir is alright but they don't make an actual conditioner. Even thier beloved Reno doesn't really absorb into the leather, it mostly seems to dissolve whatever waxes or creams that have been applied and as the solvent in it evaporates, surface tension causes the wax or cream to form a smooth surface. Plain old Lexol conditioner or even better, Bick 4, seem to be much better at conditioning leather.

    I have tried many polishes, Burgol Palmenwachsschuhcreme und Schuhpomade, La Cordonnerie Anglaise Pommadier und Bees Wax, Kiwi Shoe Polish und Pflegecreme, Famaco Emulsionscreme und Hartwachscreme, Saphir Medaille D`OR Pommadier und Pate de Luxe, while living in Europe. Just a sample of my shoe caring box. But of all of them My favorite is Kiwi!! I was also in the Army and I feel that with very little effort my shoes have a great shine. In fact, this guy is spitshing his kicks. I don*t think it matters what kind of polish you use because with the rubbing, water, alcohol, and don*t forget TIME, you will get a Super shine. In the Army that was an important point when you went to the Board for promotion. How you presented yourself. Each thier own, but for less money you can get the same results. It*s just a matter of TIME!! I bet he spends at least 30-60min. on 1 shoe. And in the beginning alot more because the shoe needs many base coats.

    Chris J I've used both. Saphir is presented in nicer packaging, but the difference in quality isn't night and day. Particularly because a firm, wax polish wont seep into the shoe very much anyway
